Josh Gordon facing banishment from the NFL again, per report Updated December 20, 2018 at 12:46 PM ; Posted December 20, 2018 at 9:51 AM Former Browns and current Patriots receiver Josh Gordon is facing indefinite suspension again. ( The Associated Press By Mary Kay Cabot, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio — Former Browns receiver Josh Gordon, traded to the Patriots in September, is facing indefinite suspension by the NFL again for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, according to NFL Network. Gordon announced on Twitter Thursday that he was stepping away from the game again to focus on his mental health. If the league suspends him indefinitely again for a minimum of a year, his once-promising career could be over. It was the same thing he said when he left the Browns before training camp and entered another month-long rehab program at the University of Florida. That he made it through 11 games with the Patriots is the surprising part. The Browns traded him to New England on Sept. 17h after he showed up for work the morning of Sept. 15 “not himself,” sources told cleveland.com. They received a fifth-round pick from the Patriots in 2019 and must give back a seventh-rounder in 2019. The trade was not conditional on Gordon finishing the season, so the terms stand. — Flash Gordon (@JOSH_GORDONXII) December 20, 2018 In 11 games with the Patriots, Gordon caught 40 passes for 720 yards and three TDs, including Tom Brady’s 500th touchdown pass. The Patriots knew this was coming on Sunday during their costly loss to the Steelers, according to NFL Network. Gordon was targeted just twice, catching one pass for 19 yards. He didn’t answer questions after the game. When Gordon showed up the Saturday before the Browns game in New Orleans in Week 2, he was tardy and seemingly impaired, according to a source. The Browns announced soon after that they were releasing him and kept him home from the game. The decision to part ways closed the book on the long Browns saga of substance abuse, suspensions, multiple chances and redemption.
Gordon showed up for work ‘not himself’ according to a source Gordon, the Browns’ second-round pick in 2012 in the supplemental draft, rejoined the team on Aug. 18 after spending an extended period of time in treatment at the University of Florida. It was at least his fifth known time in treatment. When the Browns traded him, Gordon, 27, had been suspended for 56 of a possible 97 games in his Browns career and had only played in 11 games since the end of 2014. Gordon’s career included a Pro Bowl in 2013 when he led the league with 1,646 yards. View Comments
