{10 Years of L&L} Year 9: 2016

It was during Year 9 that I finally came up for air and regained a bit more balance in my life. My daughter started part-time daycare, meaning I had more hours in my day to get back to the part of my work I missed most: writing and recording songs.

Our Listen & Learn music class program at MTC had grown significantly by this time, and I was absolutely loving my role of creating the session plans, teaching the morning classes, and handling all family communication and marketing.

But I was starting to feel the strain of teaching lessons and providing music therapy well into the evening 4 days a week. So at the end of the school year, I made the decision not to continue with 1:1 direct service, save for a handful of clients. It was a huge shift, stepping down from the work I’d been doing (and what my business was built on) for the last 10 years; however, it was a decision that was long overdue.

Making this change meant I could focus on my family and the projects I hadn’t been able to tackle before this point, like creating a new CMTE course, The Introvert’s Guide to Thriving in an Extroverted Career. For the first time since becoming a mom, I was sharing new L&L songs on an almost weekly basis. It felt like everything was falling into place, both personally and professionally.

My 2016 Gift to You

During year 9, I wrote quite a few songs for teaching academic concepts and life skills that could be used both in my music therapy sessions and music classes. One such song was “Red, Yellow & Green” — the focus is on personal safety and the meaning of red, yellow, and green as related to the traffic lights.

Many teachers use this concept in their classroom or when traveling with students from one place to another, using colored signs to indicate whether students should stop, slow down, or go; “Red, Yellow & Green” can help introduce that system as well. Today’s gift is the mp3, instrumental track, and notated lead sheet for this song.
