Good Solid Advice About Vitamins And Minerals That Anyone Can Use

Anyone who wants to maintain good health for many years should investigate the different vitamins and minerals that are out there. By supplementing your diet with carefully-chosen products, you can make sure that you are giving your body everything that it needs. Keep reading for some great advice on this important topic.

For men over 50, a different set of vitamins and minerals are required for optimum health. Vitamins like zinc, pantothenic acid and niacin all decrease as men age. Look for supplements that are specifically targeted towards men who are over 50 years of age for the best blend for optimum health.

Do not assume that it is always safe to take any vitamins you want. If you have certain health conditions, it can be quite dangerous to take certain ones. You should also be careful if you take prescription medications since taking certain vitamins can cause a negative interaction with them.

When buying fat-soluble vitamins, like omega-3, it is a good idea to store them in the refrigerator. Since they contain fat, improper store can cause them to become rancid. Also, make sure to keep them away from heat and light because this can break them down and make them ineffective.

The best source of vitamins and minerals are fresh fruit and vegetables. Making sure that you eat at least five servings of vegetables and fruit every day can help ensure you get all of the vitamins and minerals you need to be healthy. For the best results, eat them raw or very lightly cooked by steaming or poaching.

It is not safe to take more then the recommended value of most vitamins, so make sure that you avoid this. One example of this is iron, which can be damaging to the liver when taken in large doses. If you feel like you are not getting the greatest benefit from your vitamins, you should probably consult a dietician about this.

Do not use tea or coffee to wash down your vitamins and minerals. These beverages may inhibit the absorption of certain minerals. Tea has been proven to decrease the amount of iron the body absorbs. While coffee has not been shown to have the same effects, it would be best not to take any chances.

Vitamin B9 is an essential vitamin for women. It will reduce high blood pressure, prevents heart disease, and helps reduce memory loss. Orange juice, eggs, melons, dark green vegetables and strawberries are all great foods that have high levels of vitamin B9. Many vitamin supplements are formulated for women with extra concentrations of B9.

Take your vitamins in the way that’s right for you. While the best way to get vitamins and minerals is through food, you may have to take a supplement. If you struggle swallowing pills, you could find smaller or chewable pills to take. You can also use the powders that mix with water.

You should be well aware by now of the importance of taking the proper vitamins and minerals on a regular basis. No matter who you are, you can probably benefit from adding a supplement to your daily routine. Use the tips that you have read here to choose the right products.

The 10 commandments of retirement

The 10 commandments of retirement

We’re faced with a host of thorny retirement issues: Keep Social Security solvent. Make Medicare affordable. Many Americans aren’t saving enough. They want to retire earlier than they can reasonably afford. They’re effectively financially illiterate.
But in the end, you don’t need to worry about all Americans. Instead, what you need to worry about is you.
Want a comfortable retirement? Here are my 10 commandments:
1. If your preretirement lifestyle is set with a view to what you can sustain after you quit the workforce, you’re likely on track. If not, retirement could mean a sharp drop in living standards.
2. Remember that Social Security is designed to replace no more than 40% of preretirement income—and for many, that 40% is an overestimate, because the benefit calculation is skewed toward lower income Americans. In retirement, you’ll want some steady sources of income, and Social Security is probably the most secure. But recognize that it’s intended to be a minor part of your total income.
3. Have a financial and estate plan that provides for your spouse and any others who depend on you financially—and who may outlive you. Income annuities , investment income streams and life insurance might all be part of that plan.
4. Never forget the nonfinancial aspects of your retirement are important, too. Think about any significant relocation long before you retire—and consider trying it out first. It’s a big mistake to think of retirement purely as leisure time . And remember, when it comes to the fun stuff, that takes money.
5. Pay attention to communications from your employer, Social Security, Medicare, personal advisers and others. What you don’t know can hurt you. A missed deadline and any number of other goofs can do severe financial damage.
6. Put retirement savings ahead of other goals , like college or a vacation home. Unless you have a good pension plus Social Security, it’s mostly up to you—and there are no second chances.
7. Save as much as possible as soon as possible. You can always reduce your savings rate later. Investment compounding really is powerful . Load up on savings early in your career and let the money work for you in the decades that follow. When money gets tight, such as when paying for the kids’ college, you may need to trim savings for a few years. But if you over-saved during the first 10 years or so of your career, you will likely still reach retirement in good shape.
8. Recognize that your taxes may not be lower during retirement. All the signs point to higher taxes in the future for everyone. To reduce my retirement tax bill, I favor Roth accounts and municipal bond mutual funds.
9. Place health care high on your list of fixed expenses. Medicare plus supplemental insurance can cost a retired couple more than $700 a month. Even if you’re fortunate not to need much medical care, those premiums are a big monthly hit and they’ll grow each year. Prescription drugs can also be a large expense. What if you aren’t so fortunate? Remember that Medicare has no out-of-pocket limits.
10. Invest in ways that will provide a steady income stream in retirement. In many ways, retirement is no different from your working years: You want a steady flow of income. Do not be totally exposed to stock market fluctuations. You don’t want to worry about where that 4% withdrawal rate will come from each year.

The Best Article Available On Vitamins And Minerals

Getting your body in peak condition is important. Many people think it is just about exercise and food, but this is not the case. Vitamins and minerals are an integral part of your body’s fuel system. Many people fail to supplement their body, which is why this article is important. It will give you some education that your body surely needs.

Do not assume that it is always safe to take any vitamins you want. If you have certain health conditions, it can be quite dangerous to take certain ones. You should also be careful if you take prescription medications since taking certain vitamins can cause a negative interaction with them.

Try adding more magnesium, Omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin D to your diet if you are feeling sad. A deficiency in any of these may actually lead to depression. Omega-3 fatty acids are known to support brain health, while magnesium can help your body and mind calm down and relax.

Vitamin A is a critical antioxidant that enhances the immune system, ameliorates vision, reduces risk of heart issues and retards the skin’s aging process. However, if taken in huge amounts, it can be very harmful. It is important that you stay with the recommended dosage each day of 2300 IU. One of the best sources of vitamin A is dark green leafy vegetables.

You have worked hard to lose weight but you seem to have hit a wall with weight loss and burning fat. Try adding different vitamins and minerals to your low fat diet to break on through. Your body has probably consumed the vitamins and minerals stored in the body that aides in promoting weight loss and it simply needs more than you are consuming in your diet to jump start the old engine.

Make sure you get enough of certain vitamins and minerals in your diet. For multivitamins, you should try to get 100% of the listed recommended daily allowance. By taking the maximum amount, you can make sure you get enough of the required vitamins and minerals in your diet to sustain good health.

Some vitamins are stored in your body, and others are not. Water-soluable vitamins dissolve in the fluids in your body and are flushed out regularly. These vitamins include B vitamins and vitamin C. Because these vitamins are not stored in your body, it is important to consume these vitamins each day.

If you give your young children vitamin supplements make sure to keep them stored out of reach of the children. Most children’s vitamins are flavored and very similar to candy. This is to encourage children to take them. However, it can also lead to children confusing them with candy. Since it is possible to overdose on vitamins, keep them out of reach.

Having a healthy body is not just important; it is a necessity. Taking the time to understand its needs and how you can supply those needs is a priority. Take the time to understand what you read here and put these tips to use. By understanding the uses of vitamins and supplements, you can better feed your body’s needs.

Sauna Use Four Times per Week Slashes Heart Disease

Sauna Use Four Times per Week Slashes Heart Disease

View More Story at-a-glance – Research shows sauna use just once a week has a positive impact on cardiovascular disease (CVD) and the incidence of fatal heart attacks; researchers also found frequency could predict long-term risk for CVD mortality Exposure to heat stress optimizes heat shock proteins (HSP) necessary to support mitochondrial biogenesis and helps eliminate waste products from damaged HSP, an accumulation of which may lead to plaque formation in your vascular system Sauna use helps detoxify your body of heavy metal buildup from environmental pollution; heavy metals such as cadmium, lead and arsenic are associated with an increased risk of heart disease While sauna use reduces your risk of multiple conditions and helps detoxify your body, it is wise to do heavy metal testing to assess your risk; use your sauna safely by watching your fluid and electrolyte balance, acclimating to the heat slowly and using the sauna with a buddy
Some of the simplest strategies have a tremendous impact on your health. Many produce increasing benefit, in much the same way compound interest works. In other words, little changes each day can build to produce significant impact over time. Sauna use is one of those strategies.
Historically, saunas have been an approach used in Eastern Europe, Asia and Finland for detoxification, relaxation and health. 1 Athletes use extreme heat for post-workout stress reduction and to improve conditioning and athletic performance by increasing endurance. 2
Exposure to extreme temperatures is also beneficial for mitochondrial functioning, the tiny powerhouses in your cells providing your body with energy required to function. Saunas provide heat stress to your body, an important way of optimizing heat shock proteins (HSP) inside the cells, triggering mitochondrial biogenesis. 3
This supports your overall health, and especially your cardiovascular and brain health. Over time, HSP are damaged. An accumulation of HSP may lead to plaque formation in your vascular system. An estimated 610,000 people die from heart disease in the U.S. every year. 4 Heat stress helps prevent this chain of events. 5
Not surprisingly, much of the research on sauna use has come from Finland, where most people use the sauna at least once a week. Recent research 6 has once again associated sauna use with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. This same study also finds sauna use may predict cardiovascular risk in men and women. Sauna Use Inversely and Strongly Associated With Fatal Heart Attack
Previous evidence indicates sauna use has a positive effect on reducing the risk of fatal heart attacks and all-cause mortality in men. 7 The aim of this study was to look at the relationship between sauna habits and CVD mortality in men and women.
The researchers were particularly interested in whether information on these habits could predict mortality risk. The researchers gathered data from over 1,650 participants with a mean age of 63, of whom 51.4 percent were women.
During the study period of 15 years, 181 fatal CVD events occurred, with the risk of mortality decreasing linearly with increasing sauna sessions each week. Interestingly, the researchers found no threshold effect. In other words, even one sauna session a week conferred benefits to the user. 8
After adjusting for known CVD risk factors and potential confounding factors, the researchers found the duration of use was inversely associated with mortality. They also found the additional information on frequency provided predictive value of the long-term risk for CVD mortality.
The authors offered several explanations for this reduction in risk, including an increased demand on the cardiovascular system without active muscle work , and the fact that heat exposure has blood pressure-lowering effects, decreasing peripheral vascular resistance and arterial stiffness. 9
This supports previous data from the University of Eastern Finland where researchers tracked 2,300 middle-aged men for an average of 20 years. Over the course of the study, 49 percent of the men who used the sauna once a week died as compared to 38 percent who used it two to three times a week and just 31 percent of those who used it four to seven times per week. 10 Heat Stress Improves Fitness Affecting Heart Health
Saunas increase nitric oxide (NO) production in much the same way as high-intensity exercise. NO is a potent vasodilator that stimulates your brain, kills bacteria, defends against tumor growth and helps boost muscle growth and strength. 11
Another benefit to fitness can be attributed to thermogenesis. Exposure to extreme temperatures improves mitochondrial function. When your mitochondria are not working properly, your body’s ability to generate energy is impaired. The key is to eliminate old mitochondria and generate new ones — a process called biogenesis.
Strategies to support mitochondrial biogenesis are exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures, exercise and intermittent fasting . Each of these stimulates a transcription coactivator, which is the primary driver for mitochondrial biogenesis. Cardiovascular functioning and good health are dependent on a strong system of functioning mitochondria. Sauna Use Helps Rid Your Body of Heavy Metals
Yet another benefit to sauna use is helping to boost the elimination of toxins, including pesticides and heavy metals such as cadmium, arsenic, lead and mercury. Even if you may live a relatively clean lifestyle, it is not uncommon to acquire heavy metals from cosmetics or secondhand smoke or vaping .
Near-infrared saunas are particularly beneficial for detoxifying heavy metals as they heat your tissue several inches deep and enhance your natural metabolic processes, blood circulation and tissue oxygenation.
A problem with reduced sweating may be the result of an increased toxic load, which in turn can adversely affect your heart and brain health. Compared to other strategies to detoxify from heavy metals, sauna use may be one of the best, as it lowers your toxic load in a natural way.
As discussed in a previous interview with Dr. George Yu , mobilizing stored toxins for removal may be enhanced by using niacin (vitamin B3). Niacin helps mobilize fat, freeing up toxic chemicals in lipophilic tissues such as your brain. When taken in conjunction with sauna use, the mobilized toxins are safely eliminated through your sweat. Heavy Metal Poison Increases Your Risk of Cardiovascular Disease
Acute heavy metal poisoning, such as what happens when you receive a high dose at one time, leaves you feeling confused, vomiting, passed out or numb. However, it’s more likely you will have a buildup of heavy metals in your system over time, resulting in symptoms such as headache, weakness and tiredness, achy joints and muscles, or constipation. 12
Another effect of long-term exposure to heavy metals is CVD. Traditionally, heavy metal toxicity is not counted as a risk factor for CVD. 13 However, you likely have been exposed through food, water and your environment. Once in your body, metals displace essential minerals such as calcium and magnesium and increase the rate of inflammation.
Repeatedly, large studies like the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey have found heavy metal levels are correlated with cardiovascular health. 14 Other perspective studies have confirmed the presence of cadmium, 15 lead 16 and arsenic 17 are associated with hypertension, peripheral vascular disease and other CVD risks.
It is important to know adverse events don’t occur only at high levels, but have also been linked to exposure below current safe standards. 18 One of the unexpected positive results in a trial to assess chelation therapy was a reduction in cardiovascular events. 19
The National Institutes of Health initiated a secondary study in an attempt to replicate the findings and establish the removal of toxic heavy metal from the body as a plausible explanation for the benefits of chelation therapy on heart health.
A recent study 20 published in the BMJ used a meta-analysis to demonstrate even low levels of toxic heavy metals pose a risk to your cardiovascular health. Lead study author Rajiv Chowdhury, Ph.D., an associate professor in global health at the University of Cambridge in the U.K., commented: 21
“It’s clear from our analysis that there’s a possible link between exposure to heavy metals or metalloids and risk of conditions such as heart disease, even at low doses — and the greater the exposure, the greater the risk.” Sauna Use Reduces Your Risk of Multiple Conditions
Sauna use not only reduces your risk of CVD through multiple channels, including detoxifying heavy metal accumulation, but also helps reduce your risk of other health conditions. For example, sauna use has been shown to:
Reduce your risk of stroke 22 — Taking a sauna one to three times each week has been shown to lower your stroke risk by 12 percent, while daily sauna use (four to seven times a week) can reduce your risk by as much as 62 percent.
Researchers suggest sauna use reduces stroke risk by lowering inflammation, reducing arterial stiffness and improving blood flow through your circulatory system.
Benefit your brain — By increasing the production of growth factors and brain derived neurotrophic factor, 23 sauna use activates brain stem cells to convert into new neurons, 24 , 25 thereby lowering your risk for dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Boost your mood — Your body responds to heat through the production of dynorphin, 26 the chemical opposite of endorphins. However, dynorphins sensitize your brain to endorphins, which tends to boost mood. If you’ve ever had a sauna, you’ve probably experienced this “mellowing” effect.
Improve fitness and athletic performance — Exposure to heat increases your endurance, 27 in part by boosting NO. Heat stress also increases plasma volume and blood flow to your heart, which reduces cardiovascular strain and lowers your heart rate during exercise.
Since sauna use increases blood flow to your muscles, it also reduces fatigue, and by improving thermoregulatory control and increasing sweat rate, it allows your core body heat to remain lower, even during intense exertion.
Protect heart health — Exposure to heat improves vascular health, and reduces blood pressure and heart rate. 28
Aid detoxification — Flushing toxins out of your body, including pesticides and heavy metals such as cadmium, arsenic, lead and mercury, protects your neurological 29 and cardiovascular health.
Boost your immune function — Sauna use increases white blood cell, lymphocyte, neutrophil and basophil counts.
Reduce pain — Infrared saunas may reduce pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis 30 and fibromyalgia, 31 as well as headache pain.
In a study of patients with fibromyalgia, a reduction in pain 32 between 33 percent and 77 percent was noted after use of a far infrared dry sauna. Six months after the conclusion of the study, participants continued to report a reduction in pain between 28 percent and 68 percent.
Kill disease-causing microbes .
Lower inflammation and reduce oxidative stress .
Improve respiratory function — Study participants with asthma, bronchitis and obstructive pulmonary disease experienced improved respiratory function after sauna use. 33, 34
Reduce all-cause mortality . 35 Testing for Heavy Metal Toxicity
There are a number of different ways to test for heavy metals, including hair, urine and stool. Certain metals, such as thallium, show up best in a urine dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) challenge test.
DMSA is a chelating agent that can be administered either orally or intravenously. When taken together with a synergistic agent like glycine, it binds to the metals in your body, forcing them out through your stool and urine.
Wendy Myers, a functional diagnostic nutritionist, founder of MyersDetox.com and author of “Limitless Energy: How to Detox Toxic Metals to End Exhaustion and Chronic Fatigue,” is a treasure trove of information on the topic of detoxification .
Myers typically starts with a hair mineral analysis as it’s easy to do, relatively inexpensive and provides a significant amount of information. Ideally, you’ll want to do all three — hair, stool and urine tests — as no one test is perfect. Some metals come out in hair, others in urine and/or stool. Cadmium, for example, comes out in stool, so a stool test will be the most accurate. General Recommendations for Sauna Use
If you’ve never used a sauna, start by spending only four or five minutes and work your way up to between 15 and 30 minutes. You will lose important electrolytes when you use a sauna, so it is important to make sure you supplement with salt.
Salt your food with pink Himalayan salt, or put a half-teaspoon in 2 ounces of water and flavor it with lemon or lime juice and use it as salt shot. Even if you can comfortably tolerate the heat, remember the detoxification process can be severe if your toxic load is high.
If you experience detox symptoms or feel ill after sauna bathing, try cutting down on the time spent and slowly work your way up. You’ll find a discussion on the different types of saunas in my previous article, ” Boost Your Cardiovascular Health and Fitness With Regular Sauna Use .” With those considerations, here are some general recommendations for using a sauna: Infrared sauna — 160 to 180 degrees F for 15 to 30 minutes Regular (Finnish wet or dry) sauna — 180 to 190 degrees F for 10 to 20 minutes
Additionally, consider the following safety tips at all times:
Avoid using a sauna by yourself; always sauna with a buddy.
Listen to your body when deciding how much heat stress you can tolerate. If you’re ill or heat-sensitive, decrease the temperature, time spent in the sauna or both.
Do not use a sauna if you’ve been drinking alcohol.
Be sure to drink plenty of pure water before and after your sauna session. To replace electrolytes use Himalayan salt as discussed above.
Avoid the sauna during pregnancy.
You may want to rest either sitting or lying down for about 10 minutes afterward. 0

Cancer may no longer be deadly in future, say British researchers announcing breakthrough

Cancer may no longer be deadly in future, say British researchers announcing breakthrough

LONDON — Scientists have discovered a breakthrough treatment to fight cancer, and claim the disease will no longer be deadly for future generations.
Researchers at the Francis Crick Institute in London believe it is possible to strengthen the body’s defences by transplanting immune cells from strangers. Patients will begin to receive the new treatment next year, and the team now wants to establish “immune banks” to store disease-fighting cells.
Prof Adrian Hayday, an immunology expert and group leader of the immunosurveillance laboratory at The Crick, said scientists and doctors could become more like engineers, upgrading the body rather than bombarding it with toxic chemotherapy.
“Using the immune system to fight cancer is the ultimate do-it-yourself approach,” he said.
“Even a few years ago the notion that any clinician would look at a patient and deliver a therapy which wasn’t going to directly affect the cancer in any way, shape or form, would have been pretty radical. But that’s what’s happening.
Canadian lab takes a shot at producing cancer-killing treatment dubbed the ‘rarest drug on Earth’ How a tiny patch under the skin could give an early warning of most deadly cancers Scientists discover cancer cells all carry a ‘flag,’ which could help doctors target and kill tumours “We’re seeing impressive results with cells called natural killer cells. It’s very early days but there are patients receiving them in this next year and the year after, and the nice feature is, unlike other immunotherapy, these cells aren’t rejected.
“So you have the possibility of developing cell banks that could be used for anyone. You would call them up and deliver them to the clinic just hours before they were needed to be infused.
“We’re not quite there yet. But that’s what we’re trying now. There is every capability of getting cell banks like this established.”
Until this year, scientists thought it would be impossible to import a stranger’s immune cells as the immunosuppressant drugs needed to ensure the body did not reject them, would cancel out the benefits. But in 2018, scientists realized that immune cells are unlike other cells, and can survive well in another person, opening the door to transplants.
More than 350,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year, and 30 years ago just one in four people would have survived for 10 years.
But radical advances over the past decade have seen the number of people surviving for at least a decade rise to 50 per cent and the team at The Crick want to make that 75 per cent in the next 15 years.
Prof Charlie Swanton, of the Cancer Evolution and Genome Instability Laboratory, said that the ability now to sequence tumours was heralding a new era of medicine tailor-made for a patient.
“It’s a very exciting time. The technology available to us now is just incredible. We’re able to sequence the genome of a tumour, understand its micro-environment, how it metabolises, what cells are controlling the tumour, and how those can be manipulated. Using the body’s own immune cells to target the tumour is elegant because tumours evolve so quickly there is no way a pharmaceutical company can keep up with it, but the immune system has been evolving for over four billion years to do just that.”
Tumours evolve in a branched way, like trees, but scientists have recently found immune cells in their “trunks”, which could be crucial to battling the disease from the base up.
We might reach a point, maybe 20 years from now, where the vast majorities of cancers are rapidly treated diseases
Next year, Prof Swanton’s team is beginning trials to see if ramping up those specific cells could be effective in fighting lung cancer. He added: “We will be expanding those immune cells from the patient’s tumour in the lab and giving them back to the patient in hopefully overwhelming numbers to tackle the tumour at its trunk.
“It’s personalised medicine taken to the absolute extreme. Each patients have a unique therapy, it’s pretty much impossible to have the same treatment because no two tumours are the same.”
The team is also studying a group of people known as “elite controllers”, who have genetic mutations that prevent them developing cancer. In mice which have been genetically engineered to have the same mutations, it is almost impossible to induce skin cancer.
“One of the pivotal breakthroughs in HIV was the recognition of people with elite controllers who had mutations in receptors which rendered them resistant to infection and that changed the landscape utterly,” added Prof Hayday.
“We have a group in Sardinia who have a conspicuously low rate of cancers. Despite the suffering that continues to plague the oncology wards, the family, the friends, the basis for optimism is extraordinary.
“I would go so far as to say that we might reach a point, maybe 20 years from now, where the vast majorities of cancers are rapidly treated diseases or long-term chronic issues that you can manage. And I think the immune system will be essential in doing that.
“Between 1980 and 2010, 519,000 cancer deaths were avoided because of cancer research. If that’s not a note for optimism I don’t know what is.”
Prof Swanton added: “Bear in mind 30 years ago that was one in four so survival has doubled in my lifetime and I think it will double again over the next 30 years. The future is incredibly bright.”

How Vitamins And Minerals Can Enhance Your Life

Success in health is something elusive to many. They may start to eat a cleaner diet and even work out a few times per week, but they never feel they’ve achieved optimal health. What they are missing is vitamins and minerals, and the following tips and tricks should help you learn about this topic.

Many people who are in need of supplemental vitamins and minerals simply struggle physically with swallowing the pills as they can be large and, in all honesty, horrible tasting. Try drinking water that has vitamins and minerals includes with some sort of fruit taste added. This allows you to get some of the vitamins you require as well as adding to your daily water intake.

Vitamin B2 is an important part of your daily diet, and you can get this essential vitamin by eating bananas, dairy products, popcorn, green beans and more. Having a deficiency can cause many issues like decreased hemoglobin and red blood cells, along with scaly skin and cracked lips. Riboflavin is important in the prevention of cataracts, anemia, cancer and carpal tunnel syndrome.

While most vitamins can be stored at room temperature, you should store oil-based and gummy vitamins in the refrigerator. If you fail to do this, they may become sticky and clump together. Since there will be no definitive way to break them apart, this would render the entire bottle useless.

Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin that is found in wheat germ, eggs, poultry and vegetable oils. Vitamin E can be used to treat cardiovascular issues, including chest pain, high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries. It can also help prevent certain types of cancers. The easiest way to ensure you receive the nutrients you need is to take a vitamin E supplement.

Although all vitamins and minerals are important, some are even more important for growing children. When planning your child’s diet, make sure they are getting enough vitamins A, C and D, as well as the B vitamins. Calcium and iron are also very important for your growing children’s bodies.

While vegetarian and vegan diets can be very healthy, people often are lacking in certain vitamins and nutrients. Vitamin B12 and iron are two helpful nutrients that often need supplemented by vegetarians. Vegans often need to supplement their calcium and vitamin D intake to ensure they get the proper nutrients.

Vitamins and minerals are a topic which few know much about today. You have taken the time to learn all you can and you should pat yourself on the back for your hard work. Now you are ready to truly attain optimal health through the use of supplements, good for you!

Learn How Vitamins And Minerals Can Be Incorporated Into Your Life Easily

The human body is a complex thing. There are so many things the body needs that it can be overwhelming to try and manage it. Vitamins are a key to a healthy body and you should learn all you can. The article ahead is chock full of great tips to help you understand how vitamins can help.

If you are feeling like you need a bit of a boost you need to increase your vitamin intake. Vitamin C not only aids in fighting off infection, it also gives you additional energy by supplementing what you may be lacking. The main reason we feel less than ideal is that we are deficient in vitamins and minerals.

When looking for supplements, make sure that you look for those that are in their purest form. For example, Vitamin D3 is the purest form of this supplement and D2 is the synthetic version. This means that the latter may not be as effective and may possibly give you different results than you had hoped for.

There are a lot of benefits for men to take vitamin E, but women need it as well. Vitamin E has anti-aging benefits and will help battle cell damage that is related to aging. Vitamin E also can prevent cataracts and heart disease. Almonds, hazelnuts, spinach and sunflower seeds are all rich in Vitamin E.

Sometimes, we just can’t schedule in a good meal. When you take minerals and vitamins, you will be helping yourself to rid the fats from your system. It will also let you digest foods that have a bunch of chemicals in it that can make you unhealthy.

If you are trying to grow out your hair or nails, consider adding a Biotin supplement. While it won’t make your hair or nails grow faster, it will make them stronger and more resistant to breakage. In fact, Biotin is often recommended to chemotherapy patients to help them regrow the hair that they lost during treatment.

Potassium can be found in dried fruits, cereals, milk and beans. This important mineral is used to treat Menière’s disease, menopause symptoms, arthritis, muscle aches, Alzheimer’s, intestinal disorders and allergies. Studies have shown that potassium may be beneficial to those suffering from high blood pressure and may help prevent stroke.

If you are a woman who menstruates, low iron may be leaving you feeling depleted. As many as 15% of women are low in iron thanks to menstruation. Be sure to talk to your general practitioner about being tested to ensure your iron levels are fine, and if they’re not, get a supplement.

Vitamin K helps the blood to clot, keeps the bones strong, and relieves itching. Application of vitamin K to the skin helps remove scars, bruises, spider veins and stretch marks. Additionally, applying vitamin K topically can treat rosacea. However, too much vitamin K can be harmful if you suffer from kidney or liver disease.

Knowing what your body needs to be productive is good, but knowing the best way supply it is great. You have read some great information on the benefits of vitamins and what they can do for you. Use this advice to help you better handle your body and keep it in top shape.

Dollar Stores Feed More Americans Than Whole Foods

Dollar Stores Feed More Americans Than Whole Foods

Whole Foods Market Rated Worst for Toxic Food Packaging Story at-a-glance – Dollar stores such as Dollar General and Dollar Tree (which also owns Family Dollar) feed more Americans than Whole Foods Across the U.S., there are now 30,000 Dollar General and Dollar Tree stores — outnumbering Walmart’s and McDonald’s’ combined — and the chains claim to have their sights on another 20,000 locations Dollar stores target urban neighborhoods and small towns where economic struggles are commonplace, turning these areas into food deserts as they push out smaller, already struggling grocers Driving this trend is the U.S. government’s subsidy of processed food, both through the Farm Bill and through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Research shows people who consume the most subsidized foods have a 37 percent greater risk of obesity than those who consume the least
Dollar stores such as Dollar General and Dollar Tree (which also owns Family Dollar) are becoming a primary source of food for many families. The chains feed more Americans than Whole Foods, 1 which isn’t surprising when you consider there are 30,000 Dollar General and Dollar Tree stores across the U.S. — outnumbering Walmart’s and McDonald’s’ combined — compared to 446 Whole Foods locations.
The dollar store chains also claim to have their sights on yet another 20,000 locations. The problem with this trend is that dollar stores typically do not carry fresh food; it’s primarily ultra-processed packaged foods and canned foods , which we know is a recipe for ill health in the long term.
Sadly, dollar stores specifically target urban neighborhoods and small towns where economic struggles are commonplace, 2 turning these areas into food deserts as they push out smaller, already struggling grocers. As reported by Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR): 3
“Although dollar stores sometimes fill a need in places that lack basic retail services, there’s growing evidence that these stores are not merely a byproduct of economic distress. They’re a cause of it.
In small towns and urban neighborhoods alike, dollar stores are leading full-service grocery stores to close. And their strategy of saturating communities with multiple outlets is making it impossible for new grocers and other local businesses to take root and grow.”
Driving this trend is the U.S. government’s subsidy of processed food, both through the Farm Bill and through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) . This sets the stage for discount stores to monopolize the food market, which subsequently leads to poorer diets, higher disease rates and associated health care costs.
In truth, food subsidies and health care really cannot be separated, as the nation’s diet is a primary contributor to chronic disease and therefore drives our health care expenditures. The idea that big box stores and dollar stores are doing Americans a favor by making inexpensive food more available is a twisted one, as it’s really just making people sicker. Racial Discrepancies
ILSR also notes that dollar stores tend to target areas based on race rather than income. Using Tulsa, Oklahoma, as an example, ILSR shows how these stores are congregated in census tracts with more African-American residents, even though there are low-income Caucasian areas as well.
“One reason for this link might be that dollar stores see an easier revenue stream in places that lack competing grocery stores,” ILSR writes . “In the case of Family Dollar, for example, ‘Food deserts’ are its sweet spot,” notes Ann Natunewicz, an analyst at Colliers International.
The absence of grocery stores is, in turn, a direct result of a history of racial discrimination by banks that have been less likely to lend to African American entrepreneurs and by supermarket chains that have tended to bypass black neighborhoods.”
How a near-total diet of ultra-processed food affects health and longevity can be seen in the city’s mortality statistics. Life expectancy in north Tulsa, which is predominantly black, is a staggering 14 years lower than that of the south. In an effort to address this disparity, Tulsa’s city council has enacted a dollar store ordinance that limits dollar stores in the northern part of Tulsa and provides incentives for full-service grocers instead. As reported by ILSR: 4
“This is the first ordinance in the country to specifically target dollar stores, and its passage is being felt both locally and nationally. It’s marked a new era of political inclusion and grassroots power for the city’s African American residents. It’s also focused national attention on the growth of dollar stores and inspired other cities and towns to take steps to check their spread. Who Benefits From Government Food Subsidizes?
In the U.S., 12.4 percent of the population, some 40 million in all as of 2017, 5 live at or below the poverty line and rely on a monthly allotment of food stamps through SNAP to cover their food bill. Today, these monies are doled out once a month via electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards.
Disturbingly, the fastest-growing group of people on food stamps are people who have jobs and work year-round. Ironically, many of them work in the very same big box stores and discount outlets that profit from the SNAP benefits their employees are forced to use due to low wages.
In 2017, the program distributed $76 billion worth of EBT transfers, and across the country there are about 240,000 retailers approved by the federal government to accept EBT cards (i.e., food stamps).
A 2014 article 6 in Slate Magazine addressed a little-discussed facet of the food stamp subsidy — which stores actually profit from this program, funded by tax dollars, and how much. As it turns out, this data is actually kept confidential.
“Even basic facts such as how many food stamp dollars go to a particular store in a particular location are not publicly available,” Slate notes. “In what stores and neighborhoods are the most food stamp dollars spent? What kinds of foods do those stores promote and sell? What are the store’s business and labor practices?
The answers to those questions might help you see how food stamp subsidies are serving a community — if they’re doing what they were meant to do.” Discount Stores Likely Gain the Most From SNAP
The confidentiality of SNAP sales information is in sharp contrast to other government programs, where you can find out how much a participating business is getting paid. What is known, however, is that sales of staple items typically spike on days when SNAP benefits are distributed, both at grocers and discount stores.
Walmart’s annual report for 2014 listed cuts in SNAP payments as a potential risk factor for declining sales, as that same year the U.S. government cut SNAP by $8 billion over the next decade.
And, according to Slate, Walmart likely receives about 18 percent of all food stamp spending in the U.S., based on the company’s own estimates, making it “the biggest single corporate beneficiary of SNAP.” 7 Other players include Target, Costco, 7-Eleven and, of course, dollar stores. Slate notes:
“It’s a paradox that the more people are struggling to get by, the more valuable food stamps become for business. In 2009, the CEO of Family Dollar told shareholders that expanding in to the multibillion-dollar food stamp market represented a ‘significant opportunity’ that would help the company weather the bad economy.” By Encouraging Junk Food, Government Subsidies Drive Rising Health Care Costs
As mentioned at the beginning, by encouraging dollar stores and other discount stores to accept EBT, the food stamp program has become a driving force of ill health. Poor people receive money to buy food, but if all that’s available in their neighborhood is dollar stores, the food they buy will be limited to ultra-processed foods that cannot support optimal health.
As a result, they get sick, and must rely on more government aid to receive health care, which then drives up those costs. The U.S. government also subsidizes junk food ingredients — commodity crops such as corn, soy and wheat — over healthy foods via the Farm Bill, despite dietary guidelines calling for healthy portions of fresh fruits and vegetables on a daily basis.
Considering this is what farmers get paid to grow, it’s no wonder that processed corn, soy and wheat products such as bread, soda, pizza, pasta, cookies and doughnuts account for a majority of calories in the U.S. diet.
Considering these foods are a primary driver of weight gain, it’s also not surprising that people who consume the most subsidized foods have a far greater risk of obesity — 37 percent greater, according to research published in 2016. 8
As noted by Integrative Nutrition, 9 “While the subsidies were initially implemented to support struggling farmers and to secure America’s food supply, the subsidies program has unintentionally supported the creation of a health epidemic.” Food Subsidies Cannot Be Separated From Health Care
A September 2017 article 10 in The Conversation by Dariush Mozaffarian, professor of nutrition at Tufts University, hit the nail on the head, pointing out that in order to fix America’s health care, we must make food a priority.
Cost is one of the primary challenges of most health care related issues, be it access or the expansion of Medicaid. But changing how care is delivered is never going to solve the problem of how we’re going to afford to care for everyone. We really have to shift our focus to food, as poor diet is the primary driver of chronic ill health, both in children and adults.
Research 11 has shown as much as 40 percent of American health care expenditures are for diseases directly related to the overconsumption of sugar (a key staple in processed and ultra-processed food). Time magazine 12 cites data 13 showing food insecurity incurs $77.5 billion in added health care expenditures.
Children in food-insecure homes are also less likely to perform well academically, thereby perpetuating the cycle of poverty. Adding insult to injury, once you have a chronic disease such as diabetes, you’re less likely to be able to manage your condition well if you cannot afford real food.
According to Mozaffarian, his research suggests poor diet is the cause of nearly half of all deaths from heart disease, stroke and diabetes in the U.S. “To put this in perspective, about twice as many Americans are estimated to die each year from eating hot dogs and other processed meats (~58,000 deaths/year) than from car accidents (~35,000 deaths/year),” Mozaffarian writes, adding:
“It’s hard to fathom how much our country actually spends on health care: currently $3.2 trillion per year, or nearly 1 in 5 dollars in the entire U.S. economy. That’s almost $1,000 each month for every man, woman and child in the country, exceeding most people’s budgets for food, gas, housing or other common necessities …
Yet, remarkably, nutrition is virtually ignored by our health care system and in the health care debates … Traveling around the country, I find that dietary habits are not included in the electronic medical record, and doctors receive scant training on healthy eating and other lifestyle priorities.
Reimbursement standards and quality metrics rarely cover nutrition. Meanwhile, total federal spending for nutrition research across all agencies is only about $1.5 billion per year. Compare that with more than $60 billion spent per year for industry research on drugs, biotechnology and medical devices.” Ultra-Processed Junk Food — A Sick Idea That’s Making People Ill
About 90 percent of the money Americans spend on food goes to buy processed food , 14 , 15 , 16 which matches up nicely with data 17 from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which suggests 90 percent of Americans don’t eat enough fresh fruits and vegetables to maintain good health.
While that’s bad enough, research 18 reveals nearly 60 percent of the food Americans eat is not just processed but ultra-processed , defined as: Food products containing several ingredients that are not traditionally used in cooking Besides salt, sugar, oils and fats, they can include artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners and other additives “used to imitate sensorial qualities of unprocessed or minimally processed foods” These ingredients may also be added “to disguise undesirable qualities of the final product” Products containing preservatives and chemicals that give them an unnaturally long shelf-life
Less than 1 percent of daily calories comes from vegetables. Those ultra-processed foods account for 90 percent of the added sugar consumption in the U.S., and the dangers of eating too much added sugar have been well-established.
Research has even suggested refined non-vegetable fiber carbs such as potatoes, bagels and breakfast cereal are as risky as smoking, increasing your risk for lung cancer by as much as 49 percent. 19
The 2015-2020 U.S. dietary guidelines 20 even recommend limiting your sugar intake to a maximum of 10 percent of your daily calories. 21 (No sugar limit was ever included in earlier guidelines.)
The difference between processed foods and ultra-processed foods in terms of sugar content is quite dramatic. The researchers found that about 2 percent of the calories in processed foods came from added sugars. By definition, unprocessed or minimally processed contained none. Ultra-processed foods, meanwhile, got 21 percent of their calories from added sugars! Protect Your Health by Eating Real Food
There’s no doubt we have serious health epidemics on our hands — and that a majority, if not all of them, are linked to our government’s subsidy of junk food over real food, and a system that encourages the use of SNAP benefits in discount stores selling nothing but ultra-processed food.
There are no quick and easy answers here. All you can do is remember that your diet really is the foundation upon which your health is built, and that eating a processed food diet is a recipe for long-term disaster. Studies have repeatedly shown that real food is more expensive than processed fare, and there’s no denying the fact that there are areas where the only food retailers available are dollar stores and gas stations.
Still, if you have access to real food, I encourage you to take the time to learn how to cook from scratch and make the most of any leftovers. Also consider growing some of your own. To learn more, see my previous article on creating edible gardens in small spaces . I’ve also written about how you can garden during the winter . This clearly requires a bit more dedication and planning, but it can be done if you have the will.
One of the easiest foods to grow at home, even if you’re new to gardening and have limited space, is sprouts . A highly-concentrated source of enzymes, vitamins, minerals and other phytochemicals, sprouted seeds are a true superfood that many overlook. In fact, the protein, vitamin and mineral content of many sprouted seeds far surpass that of organic homegrown vegetables.
Also emphasize foods high in healthy fats , such as avocados, coconut oil, butter and nuts. The high fat content will provide you the calories you need despite smaller portions and keep you satiated longer (opposed to high-sugar, low-fat meals which will have you craving more food in a matter of hours). Healthy fats will also promote efficient fat burning and support mitochondrial health, which is essential for cellular functioning. 0

Shutdown to cut office overseeing federal food stamps by 95%

Shutdown to cut office overseeing federal food stamps by 95%

(CNN) As the government shutdown loomed over the holidays, heads of federal agencies and departments overseeing health and public assistance services tweeted that, regardless of what was happening in Washington, they were attending, as much as possible, to business as usual.
In a statement over the holiday weekend, Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue said, “There may be a lapse in funding for the federal government, but that will not relieve USDA of its responsibilities for safeguarding life and property through the critical services we provide.” Trump says no end to shutdown until border barrier funded, plans January visit to new section of wall According to the statement, 61% of the Department of Agriculture’s employees would continue to work through the first week of the shutdown, but that number would decrease the longer the shutdown continues. Some of the agency’s offices to be hit hardest by the closure include the office of Food and Nutrition Services that oversees the Child Nutrition, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). By the end of the fifth day of the shutdown , staffing will be cut by 95%. As of Tuesday, the department website displayed a message stating, “Due to a lapse in federal funding, this USDA website will not be actively updated. Once funding has been re-established, online operations will continue.” Get CNN Health’s weekly newsletter Sign up here to get The Results Are In with Dr. Sanjay Gupta every Tuesday from the CNN Health team.

But other domestic nutrition assistance programs such as the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, WIC, and the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations will only be operational based on available resources. Additional federal funds and commodities will not be provided during the shutdown. Child nutrition programs including School Lunch, School Breakfast, Child and Adult Care Feeding, Summer Food Service and Special Milk will continue through February. During a lapse in government funding, we will be providing as many of our core services as we can using existing resources. We’re keeping up our duty to “Do Right and Feed Everyone,” as @SecretarySonny says.

— Dept. of Agriculture (@USDA) December 22, 2018 The Department of Agriculture will maintain meat, poultry and processed egg inspection services. Inspections of food imports and exports will also continue throughout the shutdown. An end to the shutdown didn’t appear to be in sight Tuesday, as President Trump dug his heels in over the budget. After a call with US Troops, the President said, “I can’t tell you when the government is going to be open. I can tell you it’s not going to be open until we have a wall, a fence, whatever they would like to call it.” Protecting and enhancing the well being of Americans The Department of Health and Human Services expects that nearly 8,000 federal employees would not be returning to work on Wednesday as the shutdown continues. That number equals about a quarter of the department’s employees. Most of the department is funded through the fiscal year, and those positions and divisions that are being placed on leave are funded through Agriculture and Interior appropriations. For the Department of Health and Human Services, among the activities that would continue are Indian Health Service clinics, response efforts from the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry and specific activities under the Food and Drug Administration, including responding to emergencies and managing high-risk recalls. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar reassured the country that the department’s public health missions are being maintained, despite the holiday and shutdown. “Thousands of my @HHSGov colleagues routinely work weekends and holidays, and many are tasked with working through shutdowns, to fulfill our mission to protect and enhance the health and well-being of all Americans. I’m grateful for their commitment & proud to be their colleague,” Azar said on Twitter. — Secretary Alex Azar (@SecAzar) December 24, 2018 According to the Department, the FDA’s missions that are critical to public health, such as tracking and responding to outbreaks related to foodborne illness and the flu, supporting high-risk food and medical product recalls, pursuing criminal and certain civil investigations when public health may be at risk, screening food and medical products imported into the United States, and addressing other critical public health issues will continue through the shutdown. FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb expressed his gratitude to FDA employees who were continuing to work through the closure. “I’m so proud to lead an agency driven by so many dedicated people. Working on a holiday, and through a government shutdown, to fulfill their commitment to America,” Gottlieb said on Twitter. — Scott Gottlieb, M.D. (@SGottliebFDA) December 24, 2018 As of Tuesday night, the agency website displayed a message titled “FDA Lapse in Funding” on the top of its homepage. The message says, in part, that “agency operations continue to the extent permitted by law, such as activities necessary to address imminent threats to the safety of human life and activities funded by carryover user fee funds.” According to HHS, about 41% of the FDA’s staff would be furloughed as of Wednesday, December 26. The Department said that approximately 65% of staff from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry will not be returning to work that day either.

Simple Tips To Help You Understand Vitamins And Minerals

Your body is made up of various things. A big part of your body’s makeup is vitamins and minerals. The key to knowing this is to understand that you must keep your body stocked with these things. The article you are about to read has some great advice and information on how to improve your body with vitamins.

For men over 50, a different set of vitamins and minerals are required for optimum health. Vitamins like zinc, pantothenic acid and niacin all decrease as men age. Look for supplements that are specifically targeted towards men who are over 50 years of age for the best blend for optimum health.

If you are lacking in the vitamin department, you should consider changing your diet. While many people take this as a sign that they need to run to the store and buy a supplement, most of the nutrients you need can be found in food. Do a little research in order to figure out what changes need to be made.

Vitamin A deficiencies can cause hyperkaratosis, keratomalacia and night-blindness. Forms of vitamin A, include retinol, beta carotene and retinal. This fat soluble vitamin can be found in orange and yellow fruits and vegetables, spinach, fish, liver, soy and milk. Vitamin A supplements can also provide you with the nutrients your body needs.

It is not safe to take more then the recommended value of most vitamins, so make sure that you avoid this. One example of this is iron, which can be damaging to the liver when taken in large doses. If you feel like you are not getting the greatest benefit from your vitamins, you should probably consult a dietician about this.

There are many times where you will ache and not understand why. An effective way of getting rid of those aches is to add vitamins into your diet. Fish oil and vitamin E are two supplements that soften strained muscles, easing those muscular aches and pains.

Track the number of vitamins and minerals you take. If you’re a person that takes a lot of supplements, you could be getting too much of certain vitamins or minerals. This is usually the case with fat-soluble vitamins like K, D, A, and E. If the risks worry you or if you take prescriptions, you should talk to a physician.

Take several children gummies if you are older. Adults need to take more vitamins than kids, so when you take one it won’t be enough. Be careful, though, because too many vitamins can be bad.

Though you may not understand what goes on inside your body, you can certainly impact how well it works. The article you just read gave you some great info on vitamins and their uses. Add these tips to your daily routine and you will reap the rewards of a healthy body that is properly managed.

Best Herbs, Vitamins and Supplements For Removing Calcium Deposits & Plaque Buildup From Your Arteries
===============================================
When attempting to remove calcium deposits from the arteries, most people mistakenly stop taking calcium supplements.

This is wrong and counterproductive because calcium has many benefits and it’s a very important mineral, especially in your BONES…

But NOT in your arteries and heart.

In fact, calcium deposits and plaque buildup is a sign of early aging.

So you really need to be proactive and reverse and remove calcium and plaque buildup
For anti-aging purposes
For improved blood flow and circulation
To help reduce your risk of a heart attack or stroke.

And the good news is that no matter how old you are or how “bad” things may seem in your arteries, you can DEFINITELY help reverse and remove calcium and plaque buildup… quickly and easily.

And the best part is you can do it naturally – no need to ever take medication.

I’ve done it over and over again with hundreds and thousands of my clients, including my father!

Best Herbs, Vitamins & Minerals

Regular, daily exercise and a healthy diet of natural foods is very important for overall health.

Unfortunately, there’s no way you can get all of your vitamins and minerals from food, unless you ate thousands of calories daily.

And when it comes to plaque and calcium removal, there are some very specific, potent and effective supplements that will give you dramatic results in just a few short weeks.

-Vitamin C, D3, E and especially K2-7 (MK7) and Magnesium are very important at removing calcium OUT of your arteries and putting it in your bones where it belongs

-Nattokinase reduces Fibrin buildup, which is an insoluble protein that impedes blood flow and thickens your blood.

-White Willow Extract and Ginger Extract are anti-inflammatory and also reduces thick, sticky blood and improves circulation. They work great together.

-NAC reduces heavy metals, toxins and pesticides from your body and also strengthens your liver… all of which is very important for healthy and clean circulation of your blood.

There are a few other good ingredients specific for our goal — such as green tea extract and a blend of L-Carnitine (Acetyl + Glycine Propionyl)

Of course, I’m not expecting or advising you to go out and buy all of these ingredients individually and take them daily because it’s just way too expensive and inconvenient.

I know from personal experience because I tried it myself and my parents.

It’s not a long-term solution and if you don’t stick to something long-term, you won’t get lasting results.

The good news is that under this video you can get access to a simple, proven and effective solution, which eliminates the need to take all of these ingredients by themselves.

So it’s easy and it’s what I do myself.
