Leland Keyser to tell FBI she has no knowledge of Kavanaugh or party

Leland Keyser to tell FBI she has no knowledge of Kavanaugh or party

Print By Rowan Scarborough – The Washington Times – Saturday, September 29, 2018
Leland Keyser stood to be the perfect witness for Christine Blasey Ford by confirming critical events that would bolster her charges against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
But she wasn’t.
She has ended up helping the nominee on two crucial questions as the confirmation process shifts from emotion-filled hearings on Thursday to a one-week FBI investigation.
Ms. Keyser was among Ms. Ford ’s best friends at Holton-Arms, the all-girl private school in Bethesda not far from Mr. Kavanaugh’s boy-only Georgetown Preparatory.
As best friends to this day, it was expected that Ms. Keyser would confirm Ms. Ford assertions: Ms. Keyser was with her on the night sometime in 1982 that Mr. Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in an upstairs bedroom in a home in Chevy Chase or Bethesda during a lightly attended party. She also said Ms. Keyser socialized with the other attendees, meaning Mr. Kavanaugh.
Before this week’s Ford -Kavanaugh hearing, Ms. Keyser sent an email to the Senate Judiciary Committee , via her attorney Howard J. Walsh III , denying this. She has no recollection of such a party, she said.
“Simply put, Ms. Keyser does not know Mr. Kavanaugh and she has no recollection of ever being at a party or gathering where he was present, with, or without, Dr. Ford ,” Mr. Walsh said.
On Saturday morning, after President Trump authorized a one-week FBI probe into Ms. Ford ’s charges, Mr. Walsh again repeated her denial in a new statement to committee staff.
“ Ms. Keyser asked that I communicate to the Committee her willingness to cooperate fully with the FBI’s supplemental investigation of Dr. Christine Ford’s allegations against Judge Brett Kavanaugh,” Mr. Walsh said. “However, as my client has already made clear, she does not know Judge Kavanaugh and has no recollection of ever being at a party or gathering where he was present, with, or without, Dr. Ford .”
The fact Ms. Keyser says she didn’t know Mr. Kavanaugh in those days is another set back for Ms. Ford .
Ms. Ford , a psychologist, says she herself met Mr. Kavanaugh as the two traveled in similar social circles.
Mr. Kavanaugh told committee staff they moved in different circles and he never met her, though he had heard the name.
If Ms. Ford did attend the same gatherings as teenage Kavanaugh, a question would be why didn’t her best friend know him?
In her testimony on Thursday, Ms. Ford brushed aside Ms. Keyser ’s lack of corroboration.
“Do you have any particular motives to ascribe to Leland ?,” asked Rachel Mitchell, a career sexual crime prosecutor hired by committee Republicans.
Ms. Ford : “ Leland has significant health challenges, and I’m happy that she’s focusing on herself and getting the health treatment that she needs, and she let me know that she needed her lawyer to take care of this for her, and she texted me right afterward with an apology and good wishes, and et cetera, So I’m glad that she’s taking care of herself. I don’t expect that P.J. and Leland would remember this evening. It was a very unremarkable party. It was not one of their more notorious parties, because nothing remarkable happened to them that evening. They were downstairs.”
“P.J.” is Patrick J. Smyth, a friend of Mr. Kavanaugh’s. He has told the committee he was not at the supposed party.
Mark Judge, who Ms. Ford said took part in the assault, has told the committee he has no memory of the party. He is an admitted alcoholic.
Ms. Ford , then 15, said she escaped the two, went down the stairs and out of the house. She said she doesn’t know how she made it home, but was not driven. She doesn’t know the house’s location or the week or month it happened.
Ms. Mitchell asked what she told Ms. Keyser the next day.
“Oh no, she didn’t know about the event. She was downstairs during the event and I did not share it with her,” she answered.
Ms. Mitchell asked if any one has come forward to say “Hey, I was at that party too.”?
“No, I haven’t talked with anyone from that party,” she said.
In attorney Walsh ’s Saturday email to the committee , he said Ms. Keyser believes Ms. Ford ’s a account.
“However, the simple and unchangeable truth is that she is unable to corroborate it because she has no recollection of the incident in question,” Mr. Walsh said.

How To Find Out Which Vitamin Strategy Is Best For You

Vitamins and minerals are an important topic today because everyone should take them if they want to live a healthy life. There is so much information out there that it may become hard to know which ones are the best to take. If you are confused then don’t worry, because the following information has solid tips to keep you informed.

If you want the most from your workout and the body you desire, remember to take your vitamins. When you put vitamins and minerals into your body, you’ll be able to recover fast and you also will find that it helps the body build muscles while burning fat.

Vitamins and minerals must be synthesized to be utilized by the body. For example, calcium makes it harder for you to absorb iron. Try not to have two forms of nutrients that react poorly with one another.

It is not safe to take more then the recommended value of most vitamins, so make sure that you avoid this. One example of this is iron, which can be damaging to the liver when taken in large doses. If you feel like you are not getting the greatest benefit from your vitamins, you should probably consult a dietician about this.

Veggies and fruits (especially citrus) contain quite a bit of vitamin C. Supplements are perfect for those who do not receive the recommended daily allowance in their food. This vitamin is potent and can help with treating skin infections, acne, stomach ulcers, gum disease, and colds. Also, studies show that vitamin C helps people with Alzheimer’s, dementia and ADHD.

An adult who would like to take a children’s gummy vitamin, should take more than one. Children need less vitamins and minerals than adults, so one will not give you all the nutrition you need. But read the label carefully, as it can be a problem to take too many of them at one time, too.

One of the biggest issues facing children today is a lack of vitamins and minerals in their diets. We often grab a box meal and see that they claim it’s healthy when the truth is the bad ingredients often outweigh the good. Ensure that you are supplementing your child’s diet with all of the major vitamins and minerals.

Do not take vitamins because someone you know is pressuring you to do so. Everyone is not the same, which means that what works for one person may have an entirely different effect on another. If you are concerned about your body lacking vitamins, you should consult your doctor to see what he would suggest.

When you are taking your vitamins, always make sure you eat something with them. Vitamins on an empty stomach can cause you to be uncomfortable and have an upset stomach. You don’t want to feel nauseous, and instead you want to focus on the positive effects that the vitamins and nutrients will provide.

You should now be aware of the importance of taking vitamins and minerals in your everday life. Without them your body lacks the key tools it needs to give you lots of energy. Since most people are always on the go, taking vitamins and minerals should be the first thing you take each day.

Turmeric Supplements May Have Caused Liver Disease

Turmeric Supplements May Have Caused Liver Disease

Many people assume that herbal supplements, such as turmeric , are safe to take without a doctor’s approval. After all, the vibrantly hued, exotic-tasting herb has cultivated quite the hype in the wellness world, with experts touting its turmeric’s health benefits , including the ability to fight cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease with all of anti-inflammatory and wonder.
However, according to a shocking new report, turmeric isn’t always safe—and can be downright hazardous to your health. One elderly woman may have even suffered some serious damage to her liver as a result of taking turmeric in capsule form.
Related Story 5 Health Benefits of Turmeric According to the findings, published in BMJ Case Reports on September 10, a 71-year-old woman was taking the supplement (as well as 20 other medicines and supplements) for her heart health and subsequently developed autoimmune hepatitis — liver inflammation as the result of your body’s immune system turning against liver cells. The condition can ultimately lead to cirrhosis of the liver and eventually liver failure.
The woman had been taking the supplements for eight months when a blood test revealed her liver enzyme level was elevated and she was diagnosed with the condition. According to the report, she hadn’t told her doctors she was taking turmeric supplements, and therefore, they had no idea what was causing her health issues.
After doing some online research, she discovered that turmeric can potentially cause liver problems and stopped taking them. The doctors continued to monitor her for the next three months, without ever knowing that she had been taking the supplements. Luckily, her liver enzymes went down. When she finally told them about the turmeric, it led them to believe that the supplements were responsible for her liver damage.
There were may have been physical indicators as well. “A substance that looked like turmeric was seen in areas of the liver injury, although we could not determine with certainty if it was turmeric,” coauthor of the report Janet Funk, MD, a professor at the University of Arizona, tells Prevention .
This chicken curry recipe—which features turmeric—is weeknight dinner goals:
What exactly is turmeric? Turmeric is a bright yellow-gold spice that has been used for hundreds of years in South Asian and Middle Eastern dishes. While it definitely adds an earthy and peppery taste to food, it has medicinal properties as well. It contains the compound curcumin, which not only gives it is color but also is responsible for the plentitude of health benefits it is famous for. According to studies it can help acne, Alzheimer’s Disease, arthritis, bloating, cancer, diabetes, Lyme disease, pain and PMS. But here’s the catch – just sprinkling turmeric on your food or adding a tablespoon or two probably isn’t going to do much when it comes to your health.
“Curcumin, one of the active ingredients in turmeric only makes up around 3 percent of turmeric spice by weight, so you would have to consume a lot of turmeric spice to get a large amount of curcumin,” Dr. Funk tells us.
This is obviously why many people opt to take turmeric as a supplement.
Should I take turmeric supplements? Before you decide to throw away your supplements, you should consider a few things.
As part of their case study, the authors conducted a review of 35 previous studies related to turmeric supplements. They found that around 5 percent of the participants suffered liver problems that were linked to the supplements. However, Dr. Funk does remind us that this is the first report of autoimmune hepatitis associate with turmeric use.
They also note that there is a possibility that specific people — such as those who drink alcohol or are older in age — who take these supplements may be more prone to having problems as a result. Additionally, there is the fact that the product itself wasn’t tested (as the woman had thrown it away before she told her doctors she was taking it) and there could be a chance it was contaminated. Dr. Funk explains to us that they have demonstrated and others have reported that turmeric supplements can be comprised of encapsulated spice (root) or the spice itself can sometime be contaminated with high levels of lead. “This is unusual, but can happen,” she says. Alternatively, the turmeric could have been reacting with one of the many other drugs the woman was taking.
Tasneem Bhatia, MD , an integrative medicine specialist, isn’t quick to dismiss turmeric supplements, pointing out that it is a well-known anti-inflammatory and reiterating that this is the fist case study to be published. “It is important to note it has been reported by the patient and not in the medical chart that turmeric may have caused the autoimmune hepatitis,” Dr. Bhatia tells Prevention .
Tips for taking turmeric and other herbal supplements Dr. Bhatia urges that people use this study as a reminder to people that supplements are like medication and should be monitored by a physician. “Patients are often left to figure this information out themselves,” she says. “Bringing supplements out of the shadow of medical care and into a well thought-out discussion where both physicians and patients are knowledgeable is the key to preventing isolated cases such as these.”
Dr. Funk agrees. “Always let you health care providers know what you are taking, including over the counter supplements,” she says. “Natural is not synonymous with safe. Many popular medications are derived from plants. Both can be associated with side effects.”
Any herbal supplement, not just turmeric, should be taken with caution – especially if they are being taken with other drugs at the same time, as many can alter the metabolism of drugs taken at the same time. “St John’s wart can speed up the metabolism of birth control pills, making them ineffective,” Dr. Funk explains. Additionally, many plant products can alter blood coagulations, so caution should be taken if someone is taking anti-coagulants, or if they are preparing for an elective surgery.
Also, keep in mind: because curcumin only makes up around 3 percent of turmeric, cooking with the spice should have no negative health implications. So no matter what, feel free to keep using it in all your favorite dishes, like the curry dishes below.

Vitamin Secrets For Saving Money And Time

Sure, eating the right foods is important to health. That’s no secret. Exercising is important for feeling great as well, as you probably know too. If you are hoping to learn something new for your health, keep reading these vitamin tips ahead.

It is not safe to take more then the recommended value of most vitamins, so make sure that you avoid this. One example of this is iron, which can be damaging to the liver when taken in large doses. If you feel like you are not getting the greatest benefit from your vitamins, you should probably consult a dietician about this.

If you are planning on taking any vitamins and minerals, you should try to schedule them around mealtimes. When you eat and digest your food, stomach acid is produced. This can help break down any vitamins you are consuming, which means that they will be a lot more effective.

Coenzyme Q-10 is used to treat heart and vessel conditions, including angina, congestive heart failure, diabetes, gum disease and high blood pressure. This potent formula strengthens immune systems and increases energy. Patients can get the substance naturally in seafood and meat; however, most prefer to take a Coenzyme Q-10 supplement.

While most vitamins can be stored at room temperature, you should store oil-based and gummy vitamins in the refrigerator. If you fail to do this, they may become sticky and clump together. Since there will be no definitive way to break them apart, this would render the entire bottle useless.

Have you ever noticed that despite working out, taking your bodybuilding supplements and eating healthy that you tend to get sick more frequently than others who don’t break their back to promote a healthy body? Try adding more of the essential vitamins to your supplement doses. You are burning far more fuel than others thus more deficient in these vitamins and minerals so you need to consume more than the average person.

While vegetarian and vegan diets can be very healthy, people often are lacking in certain vitamins and nutrients. Vitamin B12 and iron are two helpful nutrients that often need supplemented by vegetarians. Vegans often need to supplement their calcium and vitamin D intake to ensure they get the proper nutrients.

Potassium can be found in dried fruits, cereals, milk and beans. This important mineral is used to treat Menière’s disease, menopause symptoms, arthritis, muscle aches, Alzheimer’s, intestinal disorders and allergies. Studies have shown that potassium may be beneficial to those suffering from high blood pressure and may help prevent stroke.

When you are considering taking a dietary supplement, you should consider your total dietary intake and not try to use them as a substitute for healthy eating. Healthy eating is the best way to take in vitamins and minerals. If you feel that you are not eating right, try to change your eating habits before taking a supplement.

Having read this article, you are well-armed with the right information about choosing vitamins and minerals. You, of course, do not want to stop with this. Gather all the knowledge you can to help maintain good health. You will succeed at bettering your health when you try.

Soups and shakes low-calorie diets 'recommended for obese'

Soups and shakes low-calorie diets ‘recommended for obese’

Getty Images Diet replacement programmes made up of low-calorie soups, shakes and regular counselling should be a recommended NHS treatment for obesity, a BMJ study says.
People on the diets lost three times more weight than those given standard dietary advice by their GP, University of Oxford researchers found.
And their risk of developing heart disease and type-2 diabetes reduced.
But experts said it would work only if eating habits were changed for good.
Prof Paul Aveyard, study author, GP and professor of behavioural medicine at the University of Oxford, said losing weight and keeping it off was hard.
“It’s boring being on a normal diet and people struggle to stick to it for a year,” he said.
“But these programmes get you when your mental strength is at its highest.
“You have to concentrate effort into 12 weeks and because they eat so little, they lose a lot of weight quickly.”
Total diet replacement programmes are designed for people who are obese or seriously obese, with a body mass index (BMI) of more than 30, who have been unable to lose weight despite changes to diet and lifestyle.
They are currently only available privately – although NHS England has said it is considering the diets as part of a long-term plan for the NHS.
The programmes reduce daily calorie intake by replacing food with specially formulated drinks, soups and snacks. Milk, water and fibre supplements are also taken.
A typical daily intake might include: a chocolate-flavour skimmed milk and soya protein shake mix (145kcal) chicken-and-mushroom-flavour skimmed milk and soya protein soup mix (138kcal) skimmed milk and multi-wholegrain porridge mix (149kcal) lemon-flavour soya and milk protein bar covered in yoghurt-flavour coating (150kcal) Stick to the diet
In this study , of 278 people from 10 GP practices in Oxfordshire, half followed the Cambridge Weight Plan programme for eight weeks – limiting intake to 810kcal per day – then re-introduced other food gradually over the next four weeks.
They also saw a trained counsellor every week, for 24 weeks in total, to help them stick to the diet and keep the weight off.
The other half of participants were given the usual weight management advice and support from their GP practice. Image copyright Getty Images
At every stage of the study, people following the diet replacement programme lost more weight.
After a year, they had lost on average 1st 9lb (10.7kg) compared with half a stone (3.1kg) for those in the usual weight loss group.
When their blood pressure and cholesterol was measured, there were also noticeable improvements.
And those with type-2 diabetes were able to radically reduce their medication, although the study found no evidence of the condition being reversed. ‘Potential to be scaled up’
One in four adults in the UK is obese and the number of people being diagnosed with type-2 diabetes is on the rise.
Last year, a trial of patients with type-2 diabetes given a low-calorie diet of shakes and soups found half were able to lose enough weight to reverse the condition.
It is often said that losing weight quickly on these types of programmes might lead to the weight piling back on again – but the researchers said the study showed this wasn’t the case.
Prof Aveyard said the programme was an “effective intervention which GPs can confidently recommend, knowing that it leads to sustainable weight loss and lowers the risk of heart disease and diabetes”.
Dr Barbara McGowan, a member of the Society for Endocrinology, consultant endocrinologist and lead for medical obesity services at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, said: “It has the potential to be scaled up across the NHS if found to be cost-effective as a treatment for obesity.”
Dr Katarina Kos, a senior lecturer in diabetes and obesity at the University of Exeter Medical School, said people should not try one of these diets on their own, without any support.
“Of course losing weight is good if you are overweight but a large body of research indicates that the only way it will work is if using the programme as a means to future change, as a stepping stone to change eating habits for good,” she said. ‘Stay fit and healthy’
Prof Helen Stokes-Lampard, who chairs the Royal College of GPs, said she would like to see more research in this area.
“Of course, what works for one patient might not work for another,” she said. “And GPs will always aim to take into account the physical, psychological and social factors potentially impacting on a patient’s health when giving them advice.”
Prof Helen Stokes-Lampard said weight loss programmes should not be seen as the only option for patients.
“Ultimately, the best way to stay fit and healthy is to keep active, eat a healthy and balanced diet, get enough sleep, drink moderately in accordance with guidelines, and not smoke,” she said.
The trial was funded in part by Cambridge Weight Plan UK. Your comments on total replacement diets: Image copyright JANE MOORE Image caption Jane Moore says the plans encourage yo-yo dieting ‘The weight creeps back on’
Jane Moore from Northampton used the weight loss programme trialled in the study.
“This has enraged me. The first time I used it I did indeed lose weight quickly, probably a stone in a few weeks, but as soon as you return to normal eating the weight creeps back on.
“This type of ‘diet’ does nothing to educate overweight people long term, and simply encourages unhealthy yo-yo dieting in my opinion.
“In addition I developed gallstones and was hospitalised with jaundice and pancreatitis as a result of them fragmenting.
“When I had my gallbladder removed, my consultant believed that yo-yo dieting contributed to me developing these problems.
“I am delighted to say that through healthy eating I have now lost three-and-a-half stone and have kept this off for over two years now.” Image copyright KAREN TAYLOR Image caption Karen (left) and her daughter Jess have lost 10 stone between them ‘I have lost seven stones’
Karen Taylor, and her daughter Jess, from Aylesbury, used the same diet plan with impressive results.
“Jess has lost just over three stone and I have lost seven stone since January this year.
“I have suffered with my weight for many years and since childhood. I overate when pregnant with Jess, comfort ate when my marriage broke down and continued to sabotage myself with food for years, all the while thinking food was my friend.
“In January this year we embarked on our weight loss journey together and have never looked back since.” Related Topics

Things You Need To Know About Vitamins And Minerals

So, how do they do it? Those healthy, happy people you see at the gym or frolicking on the beach. What is the secret they know that you don’t? The fact is that they’re using vitamins and supplements to boost their mood, energy and health. To learn more, keep reading.

Thiamine, or vitamin B1, deficiency can cause neurological and psychiatric symptoms. These symptoms can include weight loss, weakness, irregular heart rate and psychosis. A vitamin B complex can ensure you receive the vitamin B1 you need, or you can eat pork, brown rice, liver, oatmeal, leafy vegetables, eggs and potatoes.

Folic acid prevents birth defects, certain cancers, stroke and heart disease. This B vitamin is added to flour, cold cereal and pasta. Additionally, many leafy vegetables, melons, beans and meats contain folic acid. Folic acid is used to treat Alzheimer’s, macular degeneration, RLS, neuropathy, osteoporosis and other signs of aging.

Although all vitamins and minerals are important, some are even more important for growing children. When planning your child’s diet, make sure they are getting enough vitamins A, C and D, as well as the B vitamins. Calcium and iron are also very important for your growing children’s bodies.

Talk to your doctor about which vitamins and minerals you are deficient in. This will help you to nip any problem in the bud.

To give your immune system a boost, consider taking Ginseg. Ginseng can help your body to regulate its hormones. This will help influence your insulin production, blood pressure, and metabolism. As a result, you will also find yourself thinking more clearly and having more energy to get through your day.

When you are taking your vitamins, always make sure you eat something with them. Vitamins on an empty stomach can cause you to be uncomfortable and have an upset stomach. You don’t want to feel nauseous, and instead you want to focus on the positive effects that the vitamins and nutrients will provide.

Good Advice To Help You With Vitamins And Minerals

Food is something that you probably love. But because of the way so many of us eat, you may find that you’re not eating enough of the foods that give you the nutrients you need. You must have the 21 essential vitamins and minerals to maintain good health. Keep reading the following paragraphs to learn the importance of vitamins and how to make use of them in your daily life.

For the building and maintenance of strong bones, take calcium. Taking vitamin D with calcium will help with the body’s absorption of the calcium. There are a lot of ways to get a lot of vitamin D like food, sunlight, or supplements. These can all help in the calcium absorption process.

If you are lacking a particular vitamin, it is probably best for you to add that to your diet instead of taking a multivitamin. While there are many different vitamins and minerals in these pills, most of the time the level of particular vitamins is not as high as we need. Buying a single vitamin would be more effective.

It is not safe to take more then the recommended value of most vitamins, so make sure that you avoid this. One example of this is iron, which can be damaging to the liver when taken in large doses. If you feel like you are not getting the greatest benefit from your vitamins, you should probably consult a dietician about this.

Do not use tea or coffee to wash down your vitamins and minerals. These beverages may inhibit the absorption of certain minerals. Tea has been proven to decrease the amount of iron the body absorbs. While coffee has not been shown to have the same effects, it would be best not to take any chances.

You can find vitamin B2 in green beans, popcorn, dairy products and bananas. If you are deficient you may find that your skin becomes dry. The conditions that riboflavin can improve include cataracts, anemia, carpal tunnel and cancer.

Track the number of vitamins and minerals you take. If you’re a person that takes a lot of supplements, you could be getting too much of certain vitamins or minerals. This is usually the case with fat-soluble vitamins like K, D, A, and E. If the risks worry you or if you take prescriptions, you should talk to a physician.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having doubts about the claims made by manufacturers of certain supplements containing multiple vitamins and minerals. Many advertisements don’t always share the best information. Be curious about it and find out all you can. If you aren’t sure, ask your doctor.

Manganese might be what you need more of. The process of healing wounds and the formation of bones can be helped by manganese. This mineral boosts your carbohydarte, protein and cholesterol metabolisms. Almonds, black and green tea, beans, and whole grains all have it. If you are on a specific diet that does not allow for foods containing manganese, you can always purchase it in the vitamin aisle of your favorite store.

Food is not always the best answer. It is important to learn how to supplement your diet. Clearly, a good vitamin and mineral supplement can help you enjoy optimum good health. Give your body what it needs.

By Dr. Mercola
An estimated 202,600 Americans died from opioid overdoses between 2002 and 2015, 1 and drug overdoses are now the leading cause of death among Americans under the age of 50. 2
Chronic opioid use also accounted for 20 percent of the increase in male unemployment between 1999 and 2015 3 and, remarkably, 74 percent of farmers report being addicted to opioids, or know someone who is. 4
Aside from the staggering death toll, addiction to narcotic pain relievers also places an enormous economic burden on society, costing the U.S. an estimated $504 billion each year (2.8 percent of gross domestic product), according to a November 2017 White House report. 5 , 6 Opioid Epidemic Is No Random Fluke
Adding insult to injury, evidence suggests opioid makers are directly responsible. They knew exactly what they were doing when they claimed opioids — which are chemically very similar to heroin — have an exceptionally low addiction rate when taken for pain.
In fact, the massive increase in opioid sales and subsequent addiction rates have been traced back to an orchestrated marketing plan aimed at misinforming doctors about the drug’s addictive potential, and it is this false advertising campaign that seeded the current opioid epidemic — an epidemic so great it has even lowered the national life expectancy .
Purdue Pharma, owned by the Sackler family , was one of the most successful in this regard, driving sales of OxyContin up from $48 million in 1996 to $1.5 billion in 2002. 7
Studies now show addiction affects about 26 percent of those using opioids for chronic non-cancer pain, and 1 in 550 patients on opioid therapy dies from opioid-related causes within 2.5 years of their first prescription. 8
Meanwhile, Purdue’s sales representatives were extensively coached on how to downplay the drug’s addictive potential, claiming addiction was occurring in less than 1 percent of patients being treated for pain.
Evidence also shows Sackler family members were intimately involved with the marketing machinations behind OxyContin. 9 , 10 In fact, attorney Mike Moore — who represents Ohio, Louisiana and Mississippi in lawsuits against Purdue Pharma — claims to have evidence connecting the Sackler family “directly, and personally, to corporate misdeeds” committed in the 1990s and 2000s. 11
In 2007, Purdue Pharma did plead guilty to charges of misbranding “with intent to defraud and mislead the public,” and paid $634 million in fines. 12 Alas, a decade later, it’s quite clear the company has not changed its ways to any significant degree. It, and the Sackler family, is still in the business of profiting from addiction. OxyContin Maker Patents Opioid Addiction Treatment
As reported by STAT News earlier this month, Dr. Richard Sackler — who, according to Esquire journalist Christopher Glazek, 13 was deeply involved in the marketing of OxyContin as head of the company’s research and development, sales and marketing divisions — was recently awarded a patent for a new, faster-dissolving form of buprenorphine, a mild opioid drug used in the treatment of opioid addiction. As noted by STAT News: 14
“… Sackler is listed as one of six inventors on the patent, which was issued in January [2018] … Critics told the [Financial Times] that they were disturbed that the patent could enable Sackler to benefit financially from the addiction crisis that his family’s company is accused of fueling.”
Indeed, the company is currently fighting more than 1,000 lawsuits brought by tribes, cities, counties and states across the U.S., which claim Purdue Pharma helped orchestrate the opioid addiction epidemic and should therefore help pay for the societal costs.
President Trump has also stated he would like to see a federal lawsuit be brought against opioid makers. 15
Apparently, Sackler decided to pursue avenues to cash in on the epidemic instead. Salon magazine 16 reported on the patent saying, “Sackler made billions off of sales of a drug that caused a massive public health crisis — and now he stands to make more billions by selling the public a solution.” But that’s not all. The Sacklers have actually been profiting from addiction in more ways than one for over a decade. Purdue Pharma Secretly Owned Generic Oxycontin Too
As reported by Financial Times 17 and the New York Post, 18 the Sackler family also secretly owns Rhodes Pharma, “one of the biggest producers of generic opioids, which had never before been linked to the family.”
What’s more, this company was launched just four months after Purdue Pharma’s guilty plea back in 2007. When combined, Purdue Pharma and Rhodes Pharma account for about 6 percent of the total opioid market in the U.S.
So, “not only did the Sacklers fail to scale back its marketing of OxyContin after the plea, they further cashed in on the pill crisis — by launching the second firm and selling more of the drug under a different name,” the New York Post writes, adding:
“Rhodes [Pharma] was set up as a ‘landing pad’ in case the under-fire drug maker needed a clean start amid the 2007 criminal charges, a former senior manager at Purdue told the paper.
Together, both firms accounted for 14.4 million opioid prescriptions in 2016. Rhodes Pharma also makes other highly addictive opiates such as morphine, oxycodone and hydromorphone, according to the FDA.” Purdue Pharma to Offer Free Opioid Addiction Therapy
Sackler’s new buprenorphine patent is actually held by Rhodes Pharma and, according to Bloomberg, Purdue has offered to donate an undisclosed number of treatment doses of this drug as part of any settlement that might come out of the 1,000 lawsuits currently pending. University of Kentucky law professor Richard Ausness told Bloomberg:
“I’d have to say this is a pretty clever move. Over the last 20 years, Purdue hasn’t shown any real contrition or remorse, so I see this offer of free step-down drugs as a savvy negotiating tactic to limit what they have to pay in any settlement.” Opioids Still Being Widely Overprescribed
In related news, recent research 19 published in the Annals of Internal Medicine shows nearly one-third of opioid prescriptions given in an outpatient setting are not backed by a documented medical reason for the prescription, 20 suggesting the drugs are still being widely overprescribed and misused.
According to the authors, their findings “show the need for stricter rules on patients’ needs for the highly addictive drugs.”
Of the opioid prescriptions handed out during 809 million doctor’s visits across the U.S. between 2006 and 2015, only 5 percent were prescribed for cancer-related pain; more than 66 percent were given for non-cancer pain — the most common being back pain, diabetes-related pain and arthritis — while just over 28 percent were prescribed in cases where no pain-related condition could be ascertained in the patient’s medical record.
Curiously, the most common nonpain conditions for which an opioid was prescribed were high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Dr. Harshal Kirane, director of addiction services at Staten Island University Hospital in New York City, who was not part of the study, told HealthDay News, 21 “Despite numerous policy changes, recent analyses suggest national opioid prescribing rates have not meaningfully decreased … Lax prescribing practices remain widespread.”
Seeing how doctors are largely failing to significantly cut down on opioid prescriptions, might cutting insurance coverage do the trick? Both Cigna and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida have stopped paying for OxyContin, and as of January 2019, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee will no longer pay for it either. 22
They all still pay for other brands of opioids, though, which may water down the impact of the decision. According to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee, the decision to drop OxyContin was primarily based on the fact that it still has a higher street value and is easier to crush, snort or inject than other opioids. Struggling With Opioid Addiction? Seek Help!
Regardless of the brand, it’s vitally important to realize that opioids are extremely addictive drugs that are not meant for long-term use for nonfatal conditions. Chemically, opioids are very similar to heroin, and if you wouldn’t consider shooting up heroin for that toothache or backache, you really should reconsider taking an opioid to relieve the pain as well.
The misconception that opioids are harmless pain relievers has at this point killed hundreds of thousands of people, and destroyed the lives of countless more, including the families and friends of those who have died. Don’t be so quick to be the next in line.
Some marketing materials for opioids still claim the drug will not cause addiction “except in very rare cases,” describing the adverse effects patients experience when quitting the drug as a “benign state” and not a sign of addiction. This simply isn’t true.
Panic is one psychological side effect commonly experienced when quitting these drugs, and this can easily fuel a psychological as well as physical dependence on the drug.
It’s important to recognize the signs of addiction, and to seek help. If you’ve been on an opioid for more than two months, or if you find yourself taking higher dosages, or taking the drug more often, you’re likely already addicted and are advised to seek help from someone other than your prescribing doctor. Resources where you can find help include: Your workplace Employee Assistance Program The Substance Abuse Mental Health Service Administration 23 can be contacted 24 hours a day at 1-800-622-HELP Treating Your Pain Without Drugs
With all the health risks associated with opioid painkillers, I strongly urge you to exhaust other options before resorting to these drugs. The good news is there are many natural alternatives to treating pain . Following is information about nondrug remedies, dietary changes and bodywork interventions that can help you safely manage your pain.
Medical cannabis — Medical marijuana has a long history as a natural analgesic and is now legal in 31 states. You can learn more about the laws in your state on medicalmarijuana.procon.org. 24
Kratom — Kratom (Mitragyna speciose) is a plant remedy that has become a popular opioid substitute. 25 In August 2016, the DEA issued a notice saying it was planning to ban kratom, listing it as Schedule 1 controlled substance. However, following massive outrage from kratom users who say opioids are their only alternative, the agency reversed its decision. 26
Kratom is safer than an opioid for someone in serious and chronic pain. However, it’s important to recognize that it is a psychoactive substance and should be used with great care. There’s very little research showing how to use it safely and effectively, and it may have a very different effect from one person to the next. The other issue to address is that there are a number of different strains available with different effects.
Also, while it may be useful for weaning people off opioids, kratom is in itself addictive. So, while it appears to be a far safer alternative to opioids, it’s still a powerful and potentially addictive substance. So please, do your own research before trying it.
Low-Dose Naltrexone (LDN) — Naltrexone is an opiate antagonist, originally developed in the early 1960s for the treatment of opioid addiction. When taken at very low doses (LDN, available only by prescription), it triggers endorphin production, which can boost your immune function and ease pain.
Curcumin — A primary therapeutic compound identified in the spice turmeric , curcumin has been shown in more than 50 clinical studies to have potent anti-inflammatory activity. Curcumin is hard to absorb, so best results are achieved with preparations designed to improve absorption. It is very safe and you can take two to three every hour if you need to.
Astaxanthin — One of the most effective oil-soluble antioxidants known, astaxanthin has very potent anti-inflammatory properties. Higher doses are typically required for pain relief, and you may need 8 milligrams or more per day to achieve results.
Boswellia — Also known as boswellin or “Indian frankincense,” this herb contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties, which have been prized for thousands of years. This is one of my personal favorites, as it worked well for many of my former rheumatoid arthritis patients.
Bromelain — This protein-digesting enzyme, found in pineapples, is a natural anti-inflammatory. It can be taken in supplement form, but eating fresh pineapple may also be helpful. Keep in mind most of the bromelain is found within the core of the pineapple, so consider eating some of the pulpy core when you consume the fruit.
Cayenne cream — Also called capsaicin cream , this spice comes from dried hot peppers. It alleviates pain by depleting your body’s supply of substance P, a chemical component of nerve cells that transmit pain signals to your brain.
Cetyl myristoleate (CMO) — This oil, found in dairy butter and fish, acts as a joint lubricant and anti-inflammatory. I have used a topical preparation of CMO to relieve ganglion cysts and a mild case of carpal tunnel syndrome.
Evening primrose, black currant and borage oils — These oils contain the fatty acid gamma-linolenic acid, which is useful for treating arthritic pain.
Ginger — This herb is anti-inflammatory and offers pain relief and stomach-settling properties. Fresh ginger works well steeped in boiling water as a tea, or incorporated into fresh vegetable juice. Dietary Changes to Fight Inflammation and Manage Your Pain
Unfortunately, physicians often fall short when attempting to effectively treat chronic pain, resorting to the only treatment they know: prescription drugs. While these drugs may bring some temporary relief, they will do nothing to resolve the underlying causes of your pain. If you suffer from chronic pain, making the following changes to your diet may bring you some relief.
Consume more animal-based omega-3 fats — Similar to the effects of anti-inflammatory pharmaceutical drugs, omega-3 fats from fish and fish oils work to directly or indirectly modulate a number of cellular activities associated with inflammation . While drugs have a powerful ability to inhibit your body’s pain signals, omega-3s cause a gentle shift in cell signaling to bring about a lessened reactivity to pain.
Eating healthy seafood like anchovies or sardines, which are low in environmental toxins, or taking a high-quality supplement such as krill oil are your best options for obtaining omega-3s. DHA and EPA, the omega-3 oils contained in krill oil, have been found in many animal and clinical studies to have anti-inflammatory properties, which are beneficial for pain relief.
Radically reduce your intake of processed foods — Processed foods not only contain chemical additives and excessive amounts of sugar, but also are loaded with damaging omega-6 fats. By eating these foods, especially fried foods, you upset your body’s ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty-acids, which triggers inflammation. Inflammation is a key factor in most pain.
Eliminate or radically reduce your consumption of grains and sugars — Avoiding grains and sugars, especially fructose, will lower your insulin and leptin levels. Elevated insulin and leptin levels are one of the most profound stimulators of inflammatory prostaglandin production, which contributes to pain.
While healthy individuals are advised to keep their daily fructose consumption below 25 grams from all sources, you’ll want to limit your intake to 15 grams per day until your pain is reduced. Eating sugar increases your uric acid levels, which leads to chronic, low-level inflammation.
Optimize your production of vitamin D — As much as possible, regulate your vitamin D levels by regularly exposing large amounts of your skin to sunshine. If you cannot get sufficient sun exposure, taking an oral vitamin D3 supplement, along with vitamin K2 and magnesium, is highly advisable. Get your blood level tested to be sure you’re within the therapeutic range of 60 to 80 ng/mL year-round. Bodywork Methods That Reduce Pain
The following bodywork methods have also demonstrated effectiveness for pain relief and pain management.
• Acupuncture — An estimated 3 million American adults receive acupuncture annually, 27 most often for the treatment of chronic pain. A study 28 published in the Archives of Internal Medicine concluded acupuncture has a definite effect in reducing back and neck pain, chronic headache, osteoarthritis and shoulder pain, more so than standard pain treatment.
• Chiropractic adjustments — While previously used most often to treat back pain , chiropractic treatment addresses many other problems, including asthma, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, headaches, migraines, musculoskeletal pain, neck pain and whiplash.
According to a study 29 published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, patients with neck pain who used a chiropractor and/or exercise were more than twice as likely to be pain-free in 12 weeks compared to those who took medication.
• Massage therapy — Massage releases endorphins, which help induce relaxation, relieve pain and reduce levels of stress chemicals such as cortisol and noradrenaline. A systematic review and meta-analysis 30 published in the journal Pain Medicine, included 60 high-quality and seven low-quality studies that looked into the use of massage for various types of pain, including bone and muscle, fibromyalgia, headache and spinal-cord pain.
The study revealed massage therapy relieves pain better than getting no treatment at all. When compared to other pain treatments like acupuncture and physical therapy, massage therapy still proved beneficial and had few side effects. In addition to relieving pain, massage therapy also improved anxiety and health-related quality of life.
• Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) — EFT continues to be one of the easiest and most effective ways to deal with acute and chronic pain. The technique is simple and can be applied in mere minutes. A study 31 published in Energy Psychology examined the levels of pain in a group of 50 people attending a three-day EFT workshop, and found their pain dropped by 43 percent during the workshop.
Six weeks later, their pain levels were reported to be 42 percent lower than before the workshop. As a result of applying EFT, participants felt they had an improved sense of control and ability to cope with their chronic pain. In the video below, EFT expert Julie Schiffman, teaches you how to use EFT to address chronic pain. 0

Songs to Encourage Moving and Grooving

Songs to Encourage Fine and Gross Motor Movement

One of the most important things to remember when working with children is that they NEED to move. Movement songs are absolutely essential to a successful music therapy session or music class. Once children have moved and stretched their bodies (and gotten some of that extra energy out), they are ready to learn!

In this blog post, I will highlight a few of my favorite goal-oriented movement songs and explain how I use them in my own music therapy sessions.

Some of the goals addressed in these songs:

  •      Improve creative thinking
  •      Improve gross and fine motor skills
  •      Increase directional awareness
  •      Increase socialization through peer interaction
  •      Improve impulse control
  •      Improve body part identification

“Move Your Body Along” is an upbeat song that targets many gross motor movements, and for young children, is a great place to start. For those who are learning to follow directions and manipulate their bodies, this song requires them to use their emerging skills to participate successfully.

Move Your Body Along

“Move Your Body Along” is a nonstop movement song that will provide children with sensory feedback (stomping, clapping, swaying) that is necessary for them to maintain focus for the duration of your music therapy session or music class.

“Ready, Set, Wait!” is a movement song with a twist: waiting! This song can be done sitting or standing, but still requires children to listen and wiggle certain body parts, such as their fingers and toes.

Ready, Set, Wait!

The most challenging part of “Ready, Set, Wait!” is, of course, the waiting! Children have to listen for the right cue — “go” — but might get tricked when they hear the “wait” that comes after “ready…set…” Talk about a tricky song! It’s the perfect next step for children who have mastered following directions and basic movements

“Up on Your Feet” is an adaptation of the old favorite, “The Banana Boat Song”, and my kiddos have been loving it lately. This song is challenging in a different way from the previous two, because it requires children to think creatively and move their bodies like plants and animals.

Up On Your Feet

“Up On Your Feet” demands some creative thinking and is an appropriate challenge for my elementary students with special needs and many of my younger kiddos in music class who are ready for a challenge.

Each of these movement songs target gross and fine motor skills, but have different elements to target a wider variety of goals, making each song even more beneficial for our clients and students; after all, that’s what it’s all about!

Tell me in the comments: what are your favorite gross and fine motor motions to incorporate into movement songs?

You can listen to all of these songs in their entirety right here. Lyrics, chords, mp3, and instrumental track for these original songs are available for download. As is the case for all Listen & Learn Music creations, we invite you to adapt these songs as needed to best serve your students and/or clients.

What You Ought To Know About Vitamins And Minerals

Knowing the importance of vitamins and minerals are key to keeping your mind and body healthy as you go forward in life. Unfortunately many people think this subject is too complicated so they don’t take the time to learn all they can. If you would like solid tips and strategies on healthy vitamins and minerals for your body, then keep reading.

When taking a supplement that lists fat as an ingredient, take it with food. Vitamins E, A, and K are some vitamins that will not absorb properly without being taken with food. It’s important to note that vitamins will work better if you are eating a healthy diet that includes a little fat.

Vitamin A deficiencies can cause hyperkaratosis, keratomalacia and night-blindness. Forms of vitamin A, include retinol, beta carotene and retinal. This fat soluble vitamin can be found in orange and yellow fruits and vegetables, spinach, fish, liver, soy and milk. Vitamin A supplements can also provide you with the nutrients your body needs.

Try adding more magnesium, Omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin D to your diet if you are feeling sad. A deficiency in any of these may actually lead to depression. Omega-3 fatty acids are known to support brain health, while magnesium can help your body and mind calm down and relax.

You have worked hard to lose weight but you seem to have hit a wall with weight loss and burning fat. Try adding different vitamins and minerals to your low fat diet to break on through. Your body has probably consumed the vitamins and minerals stored in the body that aides in promoting weight loss and it simply needs more than you are consuming in your diet to jump start the old engine.

Vitamin C can be found abundantly in citrus fruits as well as other fruits and vegetables. For those whose diets are vitamin deficient, supplements are great. This vitamin prevents colds, acne, gum disease and other conditions. It can also help anyone who has ADHD, Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia.

Make sure you get enough of certain vitamins and minerals in your diet. For multivitamins, you should try to get 100% of the listed recommended daily allowance. By taking the maximum amount, you can make sure you get enough of the required vitamins and minerals in your diet to sustain good health.

As many nasty air borne germs that lead to illness become immune themselves to our vaccination methods, the time is ideal to start adding vitamins to your diet. Vitamin C, E and others will often do more to fight off a cold or flu in some people than anything a doctor injects in our body so why not win the fight before it can even begin?

Living healthy must be a routine that you follow each day, and vitamins and minerals should be a big part of it. You don’t have to make it a complicated process, just follow the tips that you learned here to help guide you along. It really is easy to maintain your healthy if you know the right vitamins and minerals to take.

Dear Moderate Democrats: Your Party Has Completely Abandoned You Share Tweet The opinions expressed by columnists are their own and do not represent the views of Townhall.com. Trending Half of Americans Live in Fear – They’re Called Men
I grew up in a small town in rural New England, which has long been a stronghold for Democrats. My grandfather was a carpenter, and for many years as a boy, my father was, too. Several of my family members are or used to be members of labor unions, and many of them have for years consistently and exclusively voted for Democratic candidates.
For much of my young life, their commitment to the Democratic Party had puzzled me. The values I grew up in my small town were the same American values that have made this country exceptional for more than two centuries: self-reliance, hard work, and individual liberty. Yet, come Election Day, much of my family and many of my neighbors would march off to the polls and pull the lever for candidates who seemed to embrace policies that are in complete contradiction to these ideals. And the older I get, the greater the divide grows between what Democratic voters in small towns and cities across the country think they’re getting from the politicians they vote for and the actual policies being proposed and implemented by Democrats.
The Democratic Party long ago ceased to be the party of John F. Kennedy and has instead mutated into the party of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Democrats used to say they support organized labor. Now, they are openly calling for open borders, driving down wages for millions of workers across the country. They used to say they support free expression on college campuses. Now, they do everything possible to silence students and speakers who disagree with their views. Many Democrats used to say socialism was a danger to America, but now they embrace radicals like Bernie Sanders and openly call for the creation of far-left socialist programs. View Cartoon
President Kennedy cut the top marginal tax rate for individuals by 20 percentage points, and he lowered corporate tax rates, too. Today, Democrats aren’t only opposed to tax cuts, they have pledged to raise taxes by reversing the Republicans tax reform law passed in 2017, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
Democrats used to say they supported oil drillers, coal miners, and other members of America’s energy industry, but today, they are blaming the hardworking men and women of these industries for supposedly creating catastrophic climate change. And Democrats now want to run the entire traditional energy sector out of business—coal, most forms of natural gas, and oil. One piece of legislation that has garnered significant support from some of the party’s most prominent figures, The Off Fossil Fuels for a Better Future Act, is “the most aggressive piece of climate legislation ever introduced in Congress.” It would “place a moratorium on new fossil fuel projects and moves our electricity and most transportation systems to 100% renewable energy by 2035.”
Many leading Democrats have even said that people who deny that humans are the primary cause of climate change or that think climate change isn’t catastrophic should be prosecuted in court.
The Democratic Party has been hijacked by its socialist wing, which is increasingly adopting an ever-larger portion of the Democratic Socialists of America’s platform. For example, much of the Democratic Party now wants taxpayers to pay for the college tuitions of every student in America. Democrats want the government, which can’t even operate the Postal Service without running massive deficits, to seize control of the entire health insurance industry. They also have called for a universal guaranteed-income program that would give every person “free” money—unless, of course, you already work for a living, in which case many Democrats think you shouldn’t get any cash. Additionally, Democrats are adamantly opposed to requiring people to work who are enrolled in welfare programs, such as Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly called “food stamps.” And they remain the biggest roadblock to passing a balanced budget amendment, which simply asks the government to limit itself in the same way every American family must. Moderate Democrats are no longer welcome in their own party. In many cases, they are ostracized. And moderate established Democratic politicians are increasingly being primaried for taking positions the party used to champion, like common-sense border security measures.
My grandparents’ Democratic Party was far from perfect, but it was still a far cry from the quasi-socialist party it has become in the twenty-first century. It’s time for moderate Democrats to face the facts: Your party has abandoned you . Perhaps it’s time for you to abandon it .
