Sometimes it can be difficult to tell what vitamins and minerals are the most important to maintain a balanced diet. Although there are many “superfoods” like broccoli, you need to make sure that you’re taking in a variety of different vitamins daily. Read on for some great tips to make that happen!

Men require different vitamins and minerals than women. A daily vitamin for men should have higher concentrations of B12 and B6. Another helpful vitamin to prevent hair loss is vitamin H. Along with folic acid, vitamin H will help regenerate cells and reduce the signs of aging. Vitamin E and lycopene are also beneficial for male prostrate health.

Thiamine, or vitamin B1, deficiency can cause neurological and psychiatric symptoms. These symptoms can include weight loss, weakness, irregular heart rate and psychosis. A vitamin B complex can ensure you receive the vitamin B1 you need, or you can eat pork, brown rice, liver, oatmeal, leafy vegetables, eggs and potatoes.

To help create red blood cells, iron is essential. The red blood cells are required to carry oxygen to every part of your body. Women need more iron and many supplements are made for them with higher iron concentrations. Iron deficiency often causes exhaustion and breathing problems.

There is no point in using prenatal vitamins if past menopause. Many ladies that aren’t pregnant take prenatal vitamins to help grow out their nails and hair. This is usually safe, but not wise for women that have already been through menopause since it contains more iron than they need.

While most vitamins can be stored at room temperature, you should store oil-based and gummy vitamins in the refrigerator. If you fail to do this, they may become sticky and clump together. Since there will be no definitive way to break them apart, this would render the entire bottle useless.

Gummy vitamins made for children are delicious, but make sure you take more than directed for a child. Because adults require higher levels of vitamins, taking one unit meant for a child is not sufficient for an adult. Be careful, though, because too many vitamins can be bad.

When buying vitamins, always check the expiration date on the package before you buy them. Vitamins have a shelf life and do not last forever. Storage time, exposure to light and temperature can all effect the quality of vitamins and further reduce the expiration date. So make sure that you are buying quality vitamins that have not expired.

Always tell your doctor if you are taking vitamin or mineral supplements when you are prescribed medication. Some prescribed drugs interact with certain vitamins, which can lessen or increase the effectiveness of the drug. This can have negative consequences on your body if you do not inform your doctor of supplements you are taking beforehand.

If you aren’t sure where to start when it comes to improving your vitamin intake, remember that you don’t have to do everything at once. Start slow and incorporate new things into your diet as much as you can. Before you know it, you will have a complete, balanced diet!
