Military Method for Falling Asleep in Two Minutes

Military Method for Falling Asleep in Two Minutes

Can Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) Help Reduce Alzheimer’s? Story at-a-glance – An estimated 70 million American adults have a sleep disorder, the most common of which is insomnia — the inability to fall asleep, or waking up one or more times during the night Even if you’re doing everything else right, if you’re not sleeping enough, or not sleeping well, many of the benefits of your healthy lifestyle will be lost Middle-aged men who sleep five hours or less per night have twice the risk of having a major cardiovascular event compared to men who sleep at least seven to eight hours per night A sleep-induction method developed by the U.S. military claims to have a 96 percent success rate after six weeks of consistent implementation. The method centers around preparing your mind and body for sleep by deeply relaxing for about two minutes There’s evidence showing EMF exposure reduces melatonin production just like blue light from cellphones, tablets and computers do, making it particularly important to eliminate EMFs in your bedroom
An estimated 70 million American adults have a sleep disorder, the most common of which is insomnia 1 — the inability to fall asleep, or waking up one or more times during the night. If you’re in this category, despair not, because the list of strategies to improve your sleep is long.
While most sleep problems are tied to lifestyle choices such as spending too much time indoors during daylight hours, and/or excessive use of technology and chronic exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs), which will require you to make (perhaps significant) changes to your lifestyle, a number of tips and tricks can be useful in the short term.
A method developed by the U.S. military, revealed in the 1981 book, “Relax and Win: Championship Performance,” claims to have a 96 percent success rate after six weeks of consistent implementation. Military Method Preps Your Body for Sleep
The method centers around preparing your mind and body for sleep by deeply relaxing for about two minutes. The following summary of the process was recently published in the Evening Standard: 2
1. Relax your whole face, including your tongue, jaw and the muscles around your eyes
2. Drop your shoulders and relax your arms
3. Relax your chest as you breathe out
4. Relax your legs, from your thighs to your feet
5. Relax and clear your mind, then picture yourself in one of the following scenarios:
a. You’re lying in a canoe on a calm lake with nothing but blue sky above you
b. You’re snuggled in a black velvet hammock in a pitch-black room
c. Simply repeat “Don’t think, don’t think, don’t think” for 10 seconds 21 Additional Strategies to Help You Fall Asleep Faster
I’ve written numerous articles over the years, detailing all sorts of tips and tricks to help you fall asleep faster and improve the quality of your sleep. For an extensive listing of suggestions, see “ Sleep — Why You Need It and 50 Ways to Improve It .”
Medical News Today also recently published a list of “21 Ways to Fall Asleep Naturally,” which included the following: 3
1. Create a consistent sleeping pattern by going to bed and getting up at the same time throughout the week, including on weekends
2. Make sure your bedroom is as dark as possible. If you don’t have blackout shades, use an eye mask
3. Avoid taking naps during the day or too close to bedtime
4. Exercise regularly
5. Minimize cellphone use and use of other blue light-emitting devices
6. Read a book to relax before bed
7. Avoid caffeine and other stimulants at least four hours before bed
8. Meditate or practice mindfulness on a daily basis
9. “Count sheep” by slowly counting downward from 100 to zero
10. Avoid eating at least three hours before bedtime
11. Lower the temperature in your bedroom; an ideal temperature for sleeping is around 65 degrees F.
12. Use aromatherapy; lavender is relaxing and may help induce sleep
13. Find your most comfortable sleeping position. While the article suggests side sleeping, I would suggest you try sleeping in a neutral position — on your back with a pillow supporting your neck, not your head. For more information, see Dr. Peter Martone’s article on “ The Best Position for Sleep ”
14. Listen to relaxing music before bed
15. Don’t wait to use the bathroom; while it may seem distracting to get out of bed to pee, trying to hold it will simply disrupt your sleep later
16. Take a hot shower or bath before bed
17. Avoid e-books, as the blue light from the screen will impede melatonin release
18. Try a melatonin supplement. Another, perhaps even more effective alternative is 5-HTP, which is a precursor to both serotonin and melatonin. I believe this is a superior approach to using melatonin. In one study, an amino acid preparation containing both GABA (a calming neurotransmitter) and 5-HTP reduced time to fall asleep, increased the duration of sleep and improved sleep quality 4
19. Invest in a comfortable mattress. To this, I would add the suggestion to look for a chemical-free mattress to avoid exposure to flame retardant chemicals
20. Minimize noise; use ear plugs if environmental noise is unavoidable
21. Avoid alcohol Avoid Nighttime EMF to Improve Sleep Quality
While avoiding cellphones and other devices with electronic screens (including e-readers) is important to protect your melatonin production, another factor that can have a significant impact on your sleep quality is EMFs emitted from your home wiring.
There’s actually evidence showing EMF exposure reduces melatonin production 5 just like blue light from cellphones, tablets and computers do, making it particularly important to eliminate EMFs in your bedroom.
EMF exposure also triggers neuronal changes that affect memory and your ability to learn, 6 and harms your body’s mitochondria by producing excessive oxidative damage, so “marinating” in EMFs all night, every night, can cause or contribute to virtually any chronic ailment, including premature aging.
One of the easiest ways to avoid or radically limit your nighttime electric field exposure from the wiring in your room is to pull the circuit breaker to your bedroom before going to bed. Alternatively, have an electrician install a remote breaker for convenience, which is what I’ve done.
This will virtually eliminate electric fields in your bedroom, unless you have adjacent rooms with wiring in them, in which case you will need to measure the electric fields with a meter after you shut off the power to see if it goes into the lowest range. Another really important step is to turn off your Wi-Fi at night. Ideally, hard wire your home so you have no Wi-Fi 24/7 in your home. Lack of Sleep Raises Your Risk for Heart Disease and More
A review of hundreds of sleep studies concluded that, as a general rule, most adults need somewhere between seven and nine hours — or right around eight hours — of sleep per night to maintain good health .
Regularly getting less than seven hours per night has been scientifically linked to a wide array of health problems, ranging from weight gain 7 to an increased risk for cancer. Most recently, researchers again confirmed that lack of sleep can over time take a significant toll on your long-term heart health. 8 , 9 As reported by Medical Xpress: 10
“Middle-aged men who sleep five hours or less per night have twice the risk of developing a major cardiovascular event during the following two decades than men who sleep seven to eight hours …
Study author Ms. Moa Bengtsson, of the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, said: ‘For people with busy lives, sleeping may feel like a waste of time but our study suggests that short sleep could be linked with future cardiovascular disease.
In our study, the magnitude of increased cardiovascular risk associated with insufficient sleep is similar to that of smoking or having diabetes at age 50.’”
Men who got only five hours or less per night were also more likely to smoke, be inactive and overweight, have high blood pressure and diabetes. Other studies have shown insufficient sleep and/or poor quality sleep can increase your risk for:
Accidents at work and on the road — Getting less than six hours of sleep leaves you cognitively impaired. In 2013, drowsy drivers caused 72,000 car accidents in which 800 Americans were killed and 44,000 were injured. 11
Even a single night of sleeping only four to six hours can impact your ability to think clearly the next day.
Diabetes — One 2015 study 12 linked “excessive daytime sleepiness” with a 56 percent increased risk for Type 2 diabetes .
Depression — More than half of people diagnosed with depression also struggle with insomnia. While it was long thought that insomnia was a symptom of depression, it now seems that insomnia may precede depression in some cases. 13
Your amygdala, one of your brain’s centerpiece regions for generating strong emotional reactions, including negative ones, becomes about 60 percent more reactive than usual when you’ve slept poorly or insufficiently, resulting in increased emotional intensity and volatility.
Impaired memory formation and increased risk of memory loss 14 — Sleep is essential not just for cementing events into long-term memory, but also for making sense of your life. During sleep, your brain pulls together and extracts meaning, while discarding unimportant details. In fact, sleep increases your ability to gain insights that would otherwise remain elusive by about 250 percent.
So, during sleep, part of your brain is busy stabilizing, enhancing and integrating new memories. It’s also extracting rules, and the “gist” of what’s happening in your life. Reduced productivity at work and poor grades in school are other associated side effects of insufficient sleep. Creativity is also diminished.
Impaired sexual function — In one study, 15 women with insomnia who were getting less than the recommended eight hours were found to be less sexually active after menopause. They also reported less sexual satisfaction overall.
Increased risk of pain and pain-related conditions such as fibromyalgia — In one study, poor or insufficient sleep was the strongest predictor for pain in adults over 50. 16
Chronic diseases — Sleep deprivation decreases your immune function, 17 which can have a snowball effect, raising your risk for cardiovascular disease, 18 , 19 Alzheimer’s 20 and cancer, just to name a few.
In the case of cancer, another critical mechanism involved is disrupted melatonin production. Melatonin is a hormone with antioxidant and anticancer activity.
It both inhibits the proliferation of cancer cells and triggers cancer cell apoptosis (self-destruction). Melatonin also interferes with the new blood supply tumors require for their rapid growth (angiogenesis). A number of studies have shown that night shift workers are at heightened risk of cancer for this reason.
Increased risk of dying from any cause — Compared to people without insomnia, the adjusted hazard ratio for all-cause mortality among those with chronic insomnia is 300 percent higher. 21 Sleep and Athletic Performance
While being a sleep coach may sound like a strange career, indeed, they do exist, and are slowly starting to break their way into the world of professional sports. This makes sense, considering the impact sleep can have on your athletic performance, and the fact that many professional athletes travel and have to deal with jet lag to boot. As previously noted by The Atlantic: 22
“Without proper sleep, whether it’s a short-term or long-term deficit, there are substantial effects on mood, mental and cognitive skills, and motor abilities. When it comes to recovery from hard physical efforts, there’s simply no better treatment than sleep, and a lot of it.”
The largest performance drop-offs can be seen among endurance athletes, and sports requiring quick reaction times and reflexes. To determine whether an athlete might gain a competitive edge simply by sleeping more, Stanford researcher Cheri D. Mah reached out to the Stanford Cardinal men’s basketball team.
For two weeks, the players’ athletic performance was assessed after getting their normal amount of sleep. They were fitted with motion-sensing wristbands to determine the actual length of their sleep, which averaged in at a mere 6.5 hours per night.
Next, the players were asked to extend their sleep time as much as possible for five to seven weeks. The players increased their average sleep time by about two hours, to 8.5 hours nightly. By the end of this test, players had improved their free throws by more than 11 percent, and their three-point shots by nearly 14 percent. Sprint drill speeds also improved for every single player on the team. As noted by The Atlantic:
“A 13-percent performance enhancement is the sort of gain that one associates with drugs or years of training — not simply making sure to get tons of sleep. Mah’s research strongly suggests that most athletes would perform much better with more sleep…” Sleep Coaching in the Big Leagues
A 2015 article in The Guardian 23 discusses the impact sleep coach Nick Littlehales, a former golf pro and marketer of bedding, has had on the Manchester United Football Club:
“Littehales scored early points with the manager for his success working with United defender Gary Pallister, whose debilitating back injuries eased once Littlehales discovered the player was sleeping on a mattress that hampered his injury treatment …
Sixteen years later he is a leading figure in the field, having assessed and reconfigured the bedrooms of a legion of international sporting stars as well as working with Chelsea, Real Madrid, England’s national side and a host of Olympians …
Littlehales makes sure sportspeople get the right hotel rooms on the right floor, the right air conditioning and temperature control, plus appropriate lighting and beds … Other important factors are the potential for total blackout from the sun and temperature control …
But the bedding is crucial. ‘If they don’t tick the boxes I’m bringing my own or we’ll try another hotel,’ he says … He says everyone has different physical and mental recovery times but that for elite athletes, five 90-minute sleep cycles a day is optimal … Training schedules are now often tailored around that need and many club training facilities now equipped with sleeping pods…”
Whether you’re a professional athlete or not, sleep is an important yet all too often overlooked factor in health and well-being. If you’re still skimping, thinking you’ve managed to get by OK so far, I urge you to reconsider and give sleep the attention it deserves. You can do everything else right, but if you’re not sleeping enough, or not sleeping well, many of the benefits of your healthy lifestyle will be lost. 0

Embracing & Managing Holiday Excitement

Embracing & Managing Holiday Excitement | Music Therapy | Listen & Learn Music

Around this time of year, the holiday decorations come out, everyone is filled with cheer, and our clients and students feel it! They’re excited for snow days, gifts, holiday traditions, and all the beautiful lights.

Sometimes, that can make for chaotic music therapy sessions or classes. It can be overwhelming to see this change in our clients and students, and we may need to modify our session plans to address their needs.

When leading music therapy sessions or music classes, it is important to meet our clients where they’re at. Are they excited? Be excited! But, gradually move with them to a more calm and regulated state.

For my kiddos, it’s also important to lead more movement songs throughout the session and strategically plan when interventions will occur, so that there is never too much time without movement. This provides children with the opportunity to appropriately expel their energy and remain focused and engaged for the session.

Below are two songs that help me maintain control of my groups while embracing the excitement of the season.

Some of the goals addressed in these songs:

  • Improve critical listening
  • Increase directional awareness
  • Improve fine and gross motor skills
  • Increase ability to follow clearly stated directions
  • Increase sustained attention
  • Improve sequencing
  • Improve working memory

“I Don’t Care if the Snow Comes Down” is an essential movement song for my holiday and winter sessions. The lyrics are straightforward, so my clients are able to follow along with minimal assistance. Although I typically lead this song with kiddos standing up and moving around the room, it can also be led while everyone is seated with just a simple change of some of the movements.

I Don’t Care if the Snow Comes Down | Listen & Learn Music

Another way I’ve adapted this song is that I used visual aides that have typed directives for each movement. This is great for children who are working on their reading skills, and adds an additional academic challenge. I also encourage clients and students to brainstorm different ways to move their bodies during the song.

“Polar Bear” is my go-to for calming a group or class down before the end of a session or after a high energy song. It is active and engaging, but requires focus and has movements that are regulating and provide sensory information to clients and students.

Polar Bear | Listen & Learn Music

This song has two basic movements: the classic “We Will Rock You” beat, and rubbing your hands together to create the sound of the ocean. Of course, additional rhythms or movements can be added to address more specific motor goals or to appropriately challenge your clients and students. “Polar Bear” also presents opportunities to sequence verses and utilize working memory to recall facts heard in the song.

These two songs are great additions to any holiday music therapy session or music class, and help appropriately manage all of the extra excitement that children are brimming with during this special time of year.

Helping our clients and students regulate themselves allows therapists and teachers to reach their goals more effectively, and that is what it’s all about!

Tell me in the comments: what songs do you use to embrace the excitement of the holiday?

You can listen to all of these songs in their entirety right here. Lyrics, chords, mp3, and instrumental track for these original songs are available for download. As is the case for all Listen & Learn Music creations, we invite you to adapt this song as needed to best serve your students and/or clients.

You Can Make A Change For The Better With Vitamins And Minerals

Not everyone is a health nut that loves to drink kale smoothies and participate in yoga once a week. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t get the health benefits of consuming vitamins and minerals regularly! Read this article to learn more about how to get the nutrients you really need.

If you are feeling like you need a bit of a boost you need to increase your vitamin intake. Vitamin C not only aids in fighting off infection, it also gives you additional energy by supplementing what you may be lacking. The main reason we feel less than ideal is that we are deficient in vitamins and minerals.

Working out is not enough for getting in shape; you also need to take vitamins. Your body must be fed and nourished by supplemental nutrients so it can get rid of fat, build new muscle tissue, and recover quickly after workouts.

Calcium helps you have stronger bones. You need Vitamin D to help your body absorb calcium. You can get the necessary amounts from food and sunlight. Any of these help your body absorb calcium.

If you take a supplement that contains fat, they are taken with food. Take them at mealtimes. Vitamins E, A, and K are some vitamins that will not absorb properly without being taken with food. They also work better when the food you’re eating with them also contains fat.

Vitamin A is important as an antioxidant for your immune system, reducing heart disease risk, slowing skin aging and improving your vision. Do not exceed the RDA of 2300 IU because large quantities can be toxic. You can get vitamin A from squash, carrots and dark leafy greens.

Vitamin C is one of the most beneficial vitamins that you can take. It promotes tissue growth, reduces cancer risks, helps with blood cell formation and quickens the healing process. Broccoli, peppers, oranges, tomatoes, and a wide variety of other foods are all rich in vitamin C. You can also take a supplement that contains vitamin C.

Vitamin B9 is an essential vitamin for women. It will reduce high blood pressure, prevents heart disease, and helps reduce memory loss. Orange juice, eggs, melons, dark green vegetables and strawberries are all great foods that have high levels of vitamin B9. Many vitamin supplements are formulated for women with extra concentrations of B9.

Some people believe they are able to get all the nutrients their body needs just by eating a healthy diet. This really is a good place to start, but it would be impossible to eat enough to get all the vitamins and minerals your body needs because most foods have been over-processed.

If you give your young children vitamin supplements make sure to keep them stored out of reach of the children. Most children’s vitamins are flavored and very similar to candy. This is to encourage children to take them. However, it can also lead to children confusing them with candy. Since it is possible to overdose on vitamins, keep them out of reach.

Rather than becoming intimidated at the idea of consuming more vitamins, remember that any increase is better than none! There are several different important minerals that we need regularly, and even focusing on one is better than not at all. Remember the tips in this article so you can begin your journey to a healthier self!

FDA approves an oncology drug that targets a key genetic driver of cancer, rather than a specific type of tumor

FDA approves an oncology drug that targets a key genetic driver of cancer, rather than a specific type of tumor

Press Announcements FDA News Release FDA approves an oncology drug that targets a key genetic driver of cancer, rather than a specific type of tumor New drug Vitrakvi targets specific receptor kinase that promotes tumors
November 26, 2018 Release
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today granted accelerated approval to Vitrakvi (larotrectinib), a treatment for adult and pediatric patients whose cancers have a specific genetic feature (biomarker).
This is the second time the agency has approved a cancer treatment based on a common biomarker across different types of tumors rather than the location in the body where the tumor originated. The approval marks a new paradigm in the development of cancer drugs that are “tissue agnostic.” It follows the policies that the FDA developed in a guidance document released earlier this year.
Vitrakvi is indicated for the treatment of adult and pediatric patients with solid tumors that have a neurotrophic receptor tyrosine kinase (NTRK) gene fusion without a known acquired resistance mutation, are metastatic or where surgical resection is likely to result in severe morbidity and have no satisfactory alternative treatments or that have progressed following treatment.
“Today’s approval marks another step in an important shift toward treating cancers based on their tumor genetics rather than their site of origin in the body,” said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D. “This new site-agnostic oncology therapy isn’t specific to a cancer arising in a particular body organ, such as breast or colon cancer. Its approval reflects advances in the use of biomarkers to guide drug development and the more targeted delivery of medicine. We now have the ability to make sure that the right patients get the right treatment at the right time. This type of drug development program, which enrolled patients with different tumors but a common gene mutation, wouldn’t have been possible a decade ago because we knew a lot less about such cancer mutations. Using our breakthrough therapy designation and accelerated approval processes, we support innovation in precision oncology drug development and the evolution of more targeted and effective treatments for cancer patients. This is especially true when it comes to pediatric cancers. We’re committed to continuing to advance a more modern framework of clinical trial designs that support more targeted innovations across disease types based on our growing understanding of the underlying biology of diseases like cancer.”
Research has shown that the NTRK genes, which encode for TRK proteins, can become fused to other genes abnormally, resulting in growth signals that support the growth of tumors. NTRK fusions are rare but occur in cancers arising in many sites of the body. Prior to today’s approval, there had been no treatment for cancers that frequently express this mutation, like mammary analogue secretory carcinoma, cellular or mixed congenital mesoblastic nephroma and infantile fibrosarcoma.
The efficacy of larotrectinib was studied in three clinical trials that included 55 pediatric and adult patients with solid tumors that had an identified NTRK gene fusion without a resistance mutation and were metastatic or where surgical resection was likely to result in severe morbidity. These patients had no satisfactory alternative treatments or had cancer that progressed following treatment.
Larotrectinib demonstrated a 75 percent overall response rate across different types of solid tumors. These responses were durable, with 73 percent of responses lasting at least six months, and 39 percent lasting a year or more at the time results were analyzed. Examples of tumor types with an NTRK fusion that responded to larotrectinib include soft tissue sarcoma, salivary gland cancer, infantile fibrosarcoma, thyroid cancer and lung cancer.
Vitrakvi received an accelerated approval , which enables the FDA to approve drugs for serious conditions to fill an unmet medical need using clinical trial data that is thought to predict a clinical benefit to patients. Further clinical trials are required to confirm Vitrakvi’s clinical benefit and the sponsor is conducting or plans to conduct these studies.
Common side effects reported by patients receiving Vitrakvi in clinical trials include fatigue, nausea, cough, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, vomiting, and increased AST and ALT enzyme blood levels in the liver. Health care providers are advised to monitor patient ALT and AST liver tests every two weeks during the first month of treatment, then monthly and as clinically indicated. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take Vitrakvi because it may cause harm to a developing fetus or newborn baby. Patients should report signs of neurologic reactions such as dizziness.
The FDA granted this application Priority Review and Breakthrough Therapy designation. Vitrakvi also received Orphan Drug designation , which provides incentives to assist and encourage the development of drugs for rare diseases. The FDA granted the approval of Vitrakvi to Loxo Oncology.
The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, protects the public health by assuring the safety, effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines and other biological products for human use, and medical devices. The agency also is responsible for the safety and security of our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, products that give off electronic radiation, and for regulating tobacco products. ###

How To Find The Perfect Vitamins For Your Needs

Maybe you have changed your diet and are eating really well. On top of that, you may have started exercising more to keep your body in great shape. What’s missing? Vitamins and minerals, of course, and this article will guide you through how to add them to your regime for good health!

Do not assume that it is always safe to take any vitamins you want. If you have certain health conditions, it can be quite dangerous to take certain ones. You should also be careful if you take prescription medications since taking certain vitamins can cause a negative interaction with them.

Vitamins and minerals are a great way to prevent aging and retain that youthful appearance and resilience we had in our younger days. As you get older, you tend to start requiring more nutrients in the form of vitamins and minerals to keep your skin soft, fight off colds and promote energy that we would consume far more quickly by relying only on the foods we eat.

Calcium is integral for the construction of your bones. Without vitamin D, your body cannot absorb calcium fully. You can get the necessary amounts from food and sunlight. These all improve your body’s ability to absorb calcium.

The best source of vitamins and minerals are fresh fruit and vegetables. Making sure that you eat at least five servings of vegetables and fruit every day can help ensure you get all of the vitamins and minerals you need to be healthy. For the best results, eat them raw or very lightly cooked by steaming or poaching.

Many people notice body aches but aren’t sure why. Instead of rushing off to the doctor, try ensuring you are getting the correct amount of daily vitamins and nutrients. Fish oils and vitamin E can help your muscles soften when they’re bound up.

Thiamine, or vitamin B1, deficiency can cause neurological and psychiatric symptoms. These symptoms can include weight loss, weakness, irregular heart rate and psychosis. A vitamin B complex can ensure you receive the vitamin B1 you need, or you can eat pork, brown rice, liver, oatmeal, leafy vegetables, eggs and potatoes.

Track the number of vitamins and minerals you take. If you’re a person that takes a lot of supplements, you could be getting too much of certain vitamins or minerals. This is usually the case with fat-soluble vitamins like K, D, A, and E. If the risks worry you or if you take prescriptions, you should talk to a physician.

Take your vitamins in the way that’s right for you. While the best way to get vitamins and minerals is through food, you may have to take a supplement. If you struggle swallowing pills, you could find smaller or chewable pills to take. You can also use the powders that mix with water.

What have you done to make your eating habits better? Have you changed your exercise habits? Now is the time to change your supplement habits to include the great minerals and vitamins you need to feel great. Take the expert advice you’ve found here and turn it into a better you!

Migrant mom impaled in front of her children falling from border fence

A migrant mom was impaled in front of her children over the weekend while attempting to climb a fence along the U.S.-Mexico border, authorities said. The 26-year-old Guatemalan native was trying to scale a fence near the San Ysidro Port of Entry, a crossing between San Diego and Tijuana, on Friday when she fell and impaled herself on pieces of rebar, according to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officials.
San Diego Sector Border Patrol agents said in a statement they found the woman and her two toddlers around 8:30 p.m. and transported her to a local hospital for treatment. Her injuries weren’t life threatening.

Birds fly over almost empty border crossing lines, after U.S. authorities temporarily closed the San Ysidro port of entry at the US-Mexico border, as seen from Tijuana, Mexico, Nov. 19, 2018.
“The woman landed on rebar that pierced her side and buttocks,” according to the statement.
The children, ages 3 and 5, also were taken to a local hospital for an evaluation. They were later released into Border Patrol custody.

Good Solid Advice About Vitamins And Minerals That Anyone Can Use

It’s difficult to cook healthy, balanced meals every night of the week, especially if you work often or have children to take care of. If you’re worried you aren’t getting all the nutrients you need, consider taking vitamin supplements! Read on for some tips on how to find the right ones for you.

Vitamin A is an essential antioxidant that helps increase your immunity, reduces the chance of heart disease and provides many other benefits. It can be toxic if taken in very large amounts, so be sure to stick with the recommended daily dose of 2300 International Units (IU). Carrots, squash and dark, leafy greens are the best source this vitamin.

While most vitamins can be stored at room temperature, you should store oil-based and gummy vitamins in the refrigerator. If you fail to do this, they may become sticky and clump together. Since there will be no definitive way to break them apart, this would render the entire bottle useless.

Take your vitamins in the way that’s right for you. While the best way to get vitamins and minerals is through food, you may have to take a supplement. If you struggle swallowing pills, you could find smaller or chewable pills to take. You can also use the powders that mix with water.

Although all vitamins and minerals are important, some are even more important for growing children. When planning your child’s diet, make sure they are getting enough vitamins A, C and D, as well as the B vitamins. Calcium and iron are also very important for your growing children’s bodies.

While vegetarian and vegan diets can be very healthy, people often are lacking in certain vitamins and nutrients. Vitamin B12 and iron are two helpful nutrients that often need supplemented by vegetarians. Vegans often need to supplement their calcium and vitamin D intake to ensure they get the proper nutrients.

Whenever a supplement has a recommended daily allowance amount listed, don’t exceed it! Do your research and find out what the consequences are of taking too much of that product. It could be sleep disturbances or even heart rhythm disturbances, so don’t take an overdose lightly just because it is a vitamin!

Rather than beating yourself up for not eating any broccoli today, take advantage of a quality vitamin supplement that will help fill any gaps. This article should have given you some great ideas on which vitamins and minerals you need the most. Keep up on it, and you’ll be healthier than ever!

Holiday detoxes promise to cleanse our bodies of toxins — but this wellness trend sells more snake oil than science

Holiday detoxes promise to cleanse our bodies of toxins — but this wellness trend sells more snake oil than science

Thought Experiment Holiday detoxes promise to cleanse our bodies of toxins — but this wellness trend sells more snake oil than science There is no solid science to support the idea that we need to detox our bodies in the way the purveyors of detoxification suggest. There is little evidence that special teas or diets help remove waste in a clinically meaningful manner. Yarek Waszul / for NBC News Get the Think newsletter. SUBSCRIBE Nov. 25, 2018 / 9:37 AM GMT By Timothy Caulfield, Canada Research Chair in Health Law and Policy at the University of Alberta Almost every day our local newspaper runs an advertisement for a product that will, allegedly, help you detoxify your liver, which, apparently, we all need to do. It is a full-page ad. It has impressive medical-ish diagrams and science-y sounding terminology. Every morning my reaction is the same: Do people really believe this stuff? The idea that we need to cleanse and detoxify our bodies seems to have become a culturally accepted fact. This feels especially true around the holidays, which are associated with heavy foods and even heavier shame about what that turkey and gravy and wine might be doing to our insides. After a weekend of indulgence, wellness gurus cry, your body is begging for a detox . But is it? The idea that we need to cleanse and detoxify our bodies seems to have become a culturally accepted fact. This feels especially true around the holidays. What is clear is that detoxes are a big business. There are detoxification products everywhere, including detoxifying teas , juices , water (yes, plain old H20), footpads , trampolines , supplements , magnetic bed pads , crystals , stickers , blankets , infrared saunas and hundreds, perhaps thousands, of diets. Many alternative practitioners push the idea of detoxification. A study I conducted with my colleague, Christen Rachul at the University of Alberta, found that detoxification is one of the most common services marketed on websites for naturopath clinics, which includes everything from detoxifying colon hydrotherapy (aka, an enema) to ionic foot baths (aka, sticking your feet in an electrically charged tub of water). And there are also countless chiropractors , homeopaths , acupuncturists and holistic nutritionists who offer detoxification services. The rational that is usually presented for these products and practices goes something like this: The world is full of chemicals and toxins that need to be flushed from our bodies — because who wants toxins in our bodies? — and doing so will give us more energy, vitality and general oomph . And, by the way, you will also lose weight and appear more radiant. You might even start to glow . (indeed, the desire to glow was Katy Perry’s explicit justification for one of her detoxes). Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop under fire for alleged deceptive claims Aug. 24, 2017 03:10 In reality, there is absolutely no solid science to support the idea that we need to detox our bodies in the way the purveyors of detoxification suggest . Our liver and kidneys handle the removal of waste from our bodies. When you pee you are detoxifying. There is little evidence that special teas, diets, magnets or exercises help this process in any clinically meaningful manner. As Yale neurologist Steven Novella has noted, “a healthy liver and pair of kidneys are all most of us need to sufficiently ‘detox.’” Detoxification proponents rarely identify which toxins their products will target and how, exactly, they remove toxins or “unwanted heavy metals” or generally help the body to do a job it is already designed to do. To give you a sense of just how evidence-free the idea of detoxification is, even the NIH’s National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, an entity that is often criticized for being far too lenient on pseudoscience, has stated that “there isn’t any convincing evidence that detox or cleansing programs actually remove toxins from your body or improve your health.” Thus, even the champions of woo say this woo isn’t worth it. In addition, some forms of detoxification can be harmful. A colon cleanse, for example, has the risk of perforating the bowel and causing nausea , dehydration and vomiting. And many detoxification diets are little more than unsustainable crash diets that lack the required nutrients. Given the complete absence of supporting evidence and potential harms, why does detoxification continue to have so much cultural resonance? While there is undoubtedly a lot going on here — including effective marketing and fear mongering about harmful chemicals — I think two things are particularly important to the enduring power of the detoxification myth. First, the idea has great intuitive appeal. It feels correct, partly because it leverages a simplistic, and completely incorrect, version of how our body works, which is that our innards can somehow be scrubbed clean like a sanitation system. Detoxification lends itself to the use of powerful rhetorical devices and imagery, like diagrams of the body getting flushed of toxins, which can play on this intuition. Research has found , for example, that the use of similes and metaphors can, for better or worse, be a powerful form of health messaging, heightening perceptions of risk and benefit. The same is true with images . So when a clinic tells us that that a “healthy colon is like having healthy plumbing in the house — when your plumbing is clear, the water runs smoothly, allowing pipes to drain out waste water and anything that’s no longer needed,” it makes sense . It sounds purifying. Sign me up to get me plumbing cleaned. Second, from the perspective of the individual user, it can appear like detoxes actually work, thus generating an endless stream of positive testimonials. And we know that stories and testimonials can be very persuasive, often overwhelming even a mountain of evidence or a broad scientific consensus. I have some personal experience with this phenomenon. For my book, “ Is Gwyneth Paltrow Wrong About Everything ,” I tried a Goop-endorsed detox plan . This was, basically, a 21-day crash diet. It involved extreme calorie restriction, the consumption of a shake for breakfast and dinner, and most challengingly, no coffee. (The last requirement almost killed me.) Completing the detox was tough. When I made it the full 21 days it felt like a major accomplishment. I also lost a bunch of weight. Related MORE FROM TIM CAULFIELD The multivitamin industry rakes in billions of dollars. But science says we’re not getting healthier. You can certainly see why people, including celebrities, rave about the effectiveness of these kinds of detox plans. You get a buzz from doing something tough and you may lose some weight — which, let’s be honest, is often the real, unstated goal. But in reality I just ate fewer calories during my detox diet. Of course I lost weight! (And, by the way, the weight came back almost immediately.) There was no magical detoxifying, whatever that even means. Well controlled studies — ones that account for this kind of perception bias — are needed to determine if a detox program actually provides the promised detoxification. So when you hear a celebrity talk about the benefits of a particular detox — be it weight loss, increased energy or glowing skin — remind yourself that a testimonial is not evidence. And don’t get fooled by compelling imagery about the benefits of detoxification. Our bodies are not made up of a system of tubes that need to be cleaned and unclogged via juices, trampolines or strict, completely unsustainable, diets. The next time you pee, say a silent thanks to the detoxifying work done by your kidneys and liver, because science tells us that they all that are really needed, detox wise. With all the other detoxification nonsense, you are just flushing your money, time and energy down the proverbial toilet. Timothy Caulfield Timothy Caulfield is a Canada Research Chair in Health Law and Policy at the University of Alberta, author of “Is Gwyneth Paltrow Wrong About Everything?: How the Famous Sell Us Elixirs of Health, Beauty & Happiness” (Beacon, 2015) and host of “A User’s Guide to Cheating Death” on Netflix . 5 Best Supplements For Clear Skin

My skin has become far less reactive the last few years due to some changes I’ve made to my skincare routine and my diet. Taking vitamins and minerals to supplement my diet where I’ve been deficient has helped lower inflammation and hormonal response noticeably. For a long time now, I’ve been seeking more holistic treatments rather than just treating symptoms or damage control. When my skin is reacting, it’s symptomatic of imbalance in my health. This video highlights the 5 supplements I believe have helped not just my physical well-being but have had a big impact on the inflammation in my skin. I will also explain why I avoid popular supplements like Evening Primrose Oil. Again, we are all built differently and this is what has helped me. All these supplements were recommended to me by a Dr. I suggest you get the approval of a medical professional before taking any supplement. Enjoy, my skinthusiast family!

Oh and I do take these vitamins daily but at different times as some require an empty stomach while others are better taken with food.

What can your boss ask you?

What can your boss ask you?

Alarm as Kathmandu job hopefuls asked what medications they take 25 Nov, 2018 5:00am Share on Reddit reddit A major New Zealand employer asks job hopefuls to list all prescription drugs or medications they’re on. Kathmandu has been urged by the Mental Health Foundation to reconsider the policy, saying such probing could cause distress and lead to discrimination. The Christchurch-based outdoor equipment and clothing retailer asks potential hires a range of questions during an online application process. One mandatory question is: “Are you currently taking any prescribed drugs or medications?” Advertisement If people select “yes”, they are asked to provide details. If the box is left blank, a submission cannot be lodged. The same questions are asked for a range of positions currently advertised, including desk jobs such as IT positions and those on the shop floor. Potential workers are also asked how many days off work due to illness they have taken in the past 12 months of paid work, and whether they have defaulted on loans or have other credit history issues. Shaun Robinson, chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation, said Kathmandu’s policy was disappointing and inappropriate. “Knowing what medications someone is taking does not give an employer any information about whether someone can carry out a job competently. However, it does give them clues about a person’s medical status that can enable them to discriminate. “It’s okay to ask job applicants if there is anything that will impact on their ability to do a particular job … it’s not okay to ask general questions about medical history or medication that aren’t directly relevant.” Related articles: Share on Reddit reddit Robinson urged Kathmandu and other employers to review the questions they asked during recruitment, and consult the Human Rights Commission’s guidelines. “We are particularly concerned about the impact these kinds of questions have on job seekers who are living with mental distress.” Janet Anderson-Bidois, chief legal advisor of the Human Rights Commission, said, generally, job seekers shouldn’t be asked about medical or ACC history during the application process or at interview. “It is against the law to discriminate against people based on a disability, and experiencing a psychiatric illness or psychological impairment fall within the definition of a disability for these purposes.” Anderson-Bidois said whether questions were permissible would “depend on the specific facts and the nature of the job”. “The job applicant should be told what the job’s requirements are and then asked about any medical or physical conditions or disabilities that might prevent them from carrying out the work satisfactorily. Information that is not relevant should not be requested,” Anderson-Bidois said. “The onus is on the employee to disclose any condition that may affect their ability to do the job. There is also an obligation on potential employers to consider whether it is reasonable to make adjustments to the work or working conditions in order to accommodate any condition that is disclosed.” Jarrod Haar, professor of human resources management at Auckland University of Technology (AUT), said he wasn’t aware of many other companies asking about all medications and prescriptions. It was understandable for employers to want to know about potential safety and performance issues, he said. However, people weren’t likely to disclose things that wouldn’t impact on their work, particularly what prescribed medications they were taking. “How is that important to my employer? Would you disclose an iron supplement because you’re a vegetarian?” Haar said. “With a super-tight labour market, this might work against them too. People might seek opportunities elsewhere for employers who are less nosey.” Kathmandu did not respond to approaches for comment. The company was founded in Christchurch in 1987, and has offices there and in Melbourne and London. It has 118 stores in Australia, 48 in New Zealand and a handful in the UK. The company posted a net profit after tax of $50.5 million for the 12 months ended July 21, up 32.9 per cent, or $12.5m, from the previous year. The record result saw Kathmandu pay 1800 of its permanent staff a $1000 bonus. Last week, Wishbone eatery was criticised by Green Party MP Chloe Swarbrick after a student applying for a job said she was asked what medications she took. Herald recommends

Secrets To Achieving Amazing Success With Vitamins

When it comes to good health, one must learn all they can to ensure they stay on top of things. That means knowing all you can about vitamins and minerals. In order to learn more, check out the great tips and tricks found in the content we’ve presented below.

If you are lacking in the vitamin department, you should consider changing your diet. While many people take this as a sign that they need to run to the store and buy a supplement, most of the nutrients you need can be found in food. Do a little research in order to figure out what changes need to be made.

If your supplement has fat, make sure you take it with your meal. Vitamins A, E, and K can only be absorbed if taken with food. They also work better when the food you’re eating with them also contains fat.

Iron is crucial to red blood cell production. The red blood cells are responsible for carrying oxygen through the body. Women need larger doses of iron than men, and many vitamin supplements are formulated specifically for women with higher concentrations of iron. Iron deficiency can cause breathing problems and fatigue.

There are a lot of benefits for men to take vitamin E, but women need it as well. Vitamin E has anti-aging benefits and will help battle cell damage that is related to aging. Vitamin E also can prevent cataracts and heart disease. Almonds, hazelnuts, spinach and sunflower seeds are all rich in Vitamin E.

As adults, we all know how important vitamins and minerals are to our diets but what about our children? Despite the energy they often have, they are burning away what the body needs to promote health and fight off infection. Remember to give your child vitamins in order for them to maintain good health during the growing years.

Most vegetables and fruits are packed with healthy nutrients that your body needs, but it is important to eat fresh rather than canned produce. They help give the body the healthy nutrients that it needs.

Now that you have so much handy information about vitamins and minerals at your fingertips, put it to good use. Take everything you have learned and turn it into a new health plan. The sooner you get to work, the better you’ll feel, so be sure to begin your planning right away.

Vitamin Tips, Tricks And Techniques You Need

Do you know what nutrients your body requires? Many people are not sure. There are a multitude of vitamins and minerals needed by your body each day and it is important that you understand how each of these affects you. It is key that you have access to good advice, and the tips provided by this article will help increase your knowledge.

Learn how minerals and vitamins react with each other before taking any combination of them. An example is how iron has difficulty being absorbed with calcium present. So try not to take your iron supplement at the same time as your calcium supplement, or within a half hour of consuming dairy.

From time to time your body may ache for reasons you don’t quite understand. An effective way of getting rid of those aches is to add vitamins into your diet. Fish oil and vitamin E are awesome ways to help your muscles out because they can soften them when they’re strained or taut.

Iron is a key component for building red blood cells. Your red blood cells are responsible for oxygenating your entire body. Women typically need a higher iron intake than men do. You may be iron deficient if you feel exhausted or have trouble breathing.

Fresh produce is less processed and therefore, better for you overall health than canned fruits and vegetables. If your diet is not rich in nutrients, you may need to take a natural, easily absorbed vitamin or nutrient supplement.

Folic acid prevents birth defects, certain cancers, stroke and heart disease. This B vitamin is added to flour, cold cereal and pasta. Additionally, many leafy vegetables, melons, beans and meats contain folic acid. Folic acid is used to treat Alzheimer’s, macular degeneration, RLS, neuropathy, osteoporosis and other signs of aging.

Are you more comfortable with your knowledge about the health of your body? These tips help show the important role of balance in good health. Now that you know what to do to change your health for the better, get out there and do it.
