Alcohol in breast milk may lead to lower cognition in kids, study finds – CNN

Alcohol in breast milk may lead to lower cognition in kids, study finds – CNN

Story highlights 5,107 Australian infants were followed for 11 years for the new study Higher maternal consumption of alcohol aligned with lower nonverbal reasoning in 6-and 7-year-olds who had breastfed (CNN) Children’s exposure to alcohol through breast milk may cause a comparable drop in their cognitive abilities, according to a study published Monday in the journal Pediatrics.
“This is the first study in which associations between alcohol exposure through breast milk and cognition in children are examined,” the researchers from Macquarie University in Australia wrote in the report. The authors obtained data from a longitudinal study , a continuous study of data over a period of time, of 5,107 Australian infants who were recruited in 2004 and evaluated every two years until age 11. Their mothers were asked about their alcohol consumption from a modified questionnaire used by the World Health Organization. They were also asked about daily cigarette smoking during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The children were quizzed on their vocabulary, nonverbal reasoning and cognitive processes. As many as 1 in 20 US kids harmed by alcohol in the womb, study says The researchers also found that an increased maternal consumption of alcohol aligned with lower nonverbal reasoning scores in 6- and 7-year-olds who had breastfed. The same was not found in those who had never breastfed after adjusting for factors such as prenatal alcohol consumption, gender, child and maternal age, breastfeeding duration and birth weight. This lowered cognitive ability was not maintained when the children were assessed at 10 and 11 years old, the authors discovered. “If you have a small effect to begin with and it lasts to, say, age 6 or 7, chances are by the time the child gets older, other environmental factors will start to play a bigger role,” said Dr. Melissa Bartick, an assistant professor of medicine at Cambridge Health Alliance and Harvard Medical School, who was not involved in the study. Read More The researchers hypothesized that increased education was a possible mediator for the decreased effects of age and alcohol. The size of the relationship between alcohol exposure in breast milk and cognition was small, and they suspected that clinical implications could be limited unless mothers drank a great deal. Smoking while breastfeeding did not appear to have any effect on cognition, the study found. Women who were breastfeeding tended to smoke fewer cigarettes daily than those who were not: 1.06 cigarettes per day, compared with 2.84. “Just because the authors didn’t find an issue with smoking doesn’t mean mothers should think it’s OK to smoke while breastfeeding,” Bartick wrote in an email. “Remember, the authors only looked at one thing, cognition, and there are lots of toxins in tobacco smoke, and smoking around children can cause them lots of harm and just having smoke on your clothes can be harmful to the health of others, as well as to the mother. Smoking is not good in any circumstance, for baby or mother.” Babies sleep better when they begin solid food early, study says Additionally, 91.7% of the children in the study had at some point been breastfed, but just 8.2% had not. About 82.5% of children have ever breastfed in the United States, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . “It’s a very different culture than the United States,” said Dr. Diane Spatz, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing who did a visiting professorship in Australia in 2007 but who was not involved in the new study. “The breastfeeding rates are much higher in Australia than they are in the United States. Also I think alcohol consumption is different too, is what I observed while I was there.” About one in 10 pregnant women in the United States drinks alcohol, reports the CDC . One study reported that 40% to 80% of women in the UK, Australia and New Zealand drank alcohol while pregnant. “I think we really need to emphasize to that when you are pregnant, you shouldn’t be consuming alcohol,” said Spatz, who is also director of the lactation program at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “When you are breastfeeding, you shouldn’t be consuming alcohol. If you want to have an occasional adult beverage, that’s OK, but it shouldn’t be a regular intake of alcohol.” The CDC states that not drinking alcohol is the safest option for breastfeeding mothers, but moderate alcohol consumption — defined as up to one drink a day — is not known to be harmful to infants, particularly if the mother waits at least two hours before nursing. Breast milk has the highest alcohol content about a half-hour or hour after the woman consumes a drink, and the alcohol is usually still detected for two to three hours after per drink. Is light drinking while pregnant OK? “We tell moms, ‘you know, If you are feeling tipsy, drunk, woozy, any effects of alcohol, you shouldn’t be caring for your infant, nor should you be breastfeeding your infant,’ ” Spatz said. “That’s when a mom will pump and discard her milk. But that’s for getting rid of the milk for comfort’s sake.” “Pumping and dumping” does not lessen the amount of alcohol in breast milk any faster, the CDC says. The alcohol in a mother’s milk is basically what is in her bloodstream. The new study is interesting but leaves questions unanswered because it does not detail the effect of just alcohol consumption in lactation, Spatz said. A high level of alcohol exposure in pregnancy could also affect a child’s cognition. And there is no distinction made in whether mothers breastfed exclusively or whether there was any kind of supplementation. The WHO breastfeeding resolution behind the debate Another limitation of the study was that individual people weren’t studied, just a large population, Bartick said. She noted that the researchers “had to do what’s called imputation of the missing data, which means that whenever you have to [replace] missing data, it means it’s going to be less accurate than if you had all the data there.” “I think the study is helpful, but it doesn’t definitely answer the question. The question is, how much, if any, alcohol is safe during lactation?” Bartick said. “I would advise mothers to avoid alcohol and not to use alcohol, not to use beer to try to increase their milk supply. I think that’s safe to advise.” Dr. Lauren M. Jansson, director of pediatrics at the Center for Addiction and Pregnancy and an associate professor of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, wrote in a commentary published with the study, “Previous recommendations that reveal limited alcohol consumption to be compatible with breastfeeding during critical periods of development, such as the first months of life, may need to be reconsidered in light of this combined evidence.” Follow CNN Health on Facebook and Twitter See the latest news and share your comments with CNN Health on Facebook and Twitter .
More research is needed to fully understand the effects of maternal consumption of alcohol and other substances like marijuana on breastfed children, Jansson said. A deeper dive into specific psychosocial risks for breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding mothers who use various substances is also suggested. But the study serves as an “an important step in our understanding of the complex neurobiological and developmental vulnerability of the substance-exposed child,” she added.

Tips, Tricks, Strategies And Secrets About Vitamins

You can be a young adult or a senior citizen. You may be a man or woman, tall or short. It makes no difference who you are, because all humans requires a certain amount of minerals and vitamins to live. To get a good idea of what supplements you should take to live a healthy lifestyle, keep reading.

If you are lacking a particular vitamin, it is probably best for you to add that to your diet instead of taking a multivitamin. While there are many different vitamins and minerals in these pills, most of the time the level of particular vitamins is not as high as we need. Buying a single vitamin would be more effective.

Vitamin A deficiencies can cause hyperkaratosis, keratomalacia and night-blindness. Forms of vitamin A, include retinol, beta carotene and retinal. This fat soluble vitamin can be found in orange and yellow fruits and vegetables, spinach, fish, liver, soy and milk. Vitamin A supplements can also provide you with the nutrients your body needs.

If you happen to be looking for a lifestyle change to promote better health during these times where medical costs are through the roof whether insured or not, try adding some vitamins and minerals to your daily routines. Vitamins will improve your mood and keep your body stable and healthy.

If you are planning on taking any vitamins and minerals, you should try to schedule them around mealtimes. When you eat and digest your food, stomach acid is produced. This can help break down any vitamins you are consuming, which means that they will be a lot more effective.

There are a lot of benefits for men to take vitamin E, but women need it as well. Vitamin E has anti-aging benefits and will help battle cell damage that is related to aging. Vitamin E also can prevent cataracts and heart disease. Almonds, hazelnuts, spinach and sunflower seeds are all rich in Vitamin E.

You have worked hard to lose weight but you seem to have hit a wall with weight loss and burning fat. Try adding different vitamins and minerals to your low fat diet to break on through. Your body has probably consumed the vitamins and minerals stored in the body that aides in promoting weight loss and it simply needs more than you are consuming in your diet to jump start the old engine.

Do not be swayed by all of the hype that surrounds new “miracle” vitamins. While they may have some positive effects for some people, most can go their whole lives without taking any of these things. It is always best to consult a doctor or dietician before taking anything new.

Try making sure you get enough calcium in your diet. It can help you maintain and build strong teeth and bones. It also boosts muscle function. You can find it in foods and beverages, such as broccoli, orange juice, tofu, dairy products, and spinach. If you cannot get enough calcium through food, there are also calcium supplements.

Young and old, athletes and doctors, everyone needs the right nutrients. Many people don’t get the nutrients their body needs from their diet; this is where vitamin and mineral supplements come into play. Now you know some important information to help you get rid of any vitamin deficiencies.

Great Advice About Vitamins And Minerals That Anyone Can Easily Follow

If you want to be a healthier person then it is very important that you know the power of taking vitamins and minerals. Not everyone is aware of what vitamins and minerals can do for them, but thankfully there are articles like the ones below that are here to give advice on this topic. Continue on if you would like information on how to become healthier by taking the right vitamins and minerals.

Your bones rely on calcium to grow and stay strong. You need to have lots of vitamin D to absorb calcium, though. Supplements, diet, and sun exposure are the best methods for getting proper levels of vitamin D. These will help your body absorb calcium.

Iron is an essential nutrient to build red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout your body. The amount of iron in a vitamin supplement is important because women need more iron than men. You may lack sufficient iron in your diet if you are experiencing fatigue or breathing difficulties.

If you are menopausal avoid taking prenatal vitamins since it is not the right blend of nutrients for you. Some women take these because it helps their nails and hair look great. This is usually safe, but not wise for women that have already been through menopause since it contains more iron than they need.

An adult who would like to take a children’s gummy vitamin, should take more than one. Adults’ vitamin needs are higher than children’s so one is generally not enough. At the same time, you must take care not to take too many.

Make sure you choose your beverages wisely. Try to avoid drinking a lot of coffee, tea, or soda. These drinks all have caffeine, which can keep your body from absorbing certain vitamins and minerals like iron. They can also cause you to increase secretion of water-soluble vitamins in your urine.

As many nasty air borne germs that lead to illness become immune themselves to our vaccination methods, the time is ideal to start adding vitamins to your diet. Vitamin C, E and others will often do more to fight off a cold or flu in some people than anything a doctor injects in our body so why not win the fight before it can even begin?

Talk to your doctor about which vitamins and minerals you are deficient in. You need to figure out what you are deficient in, and what you need.

If you give your young children vitamin supplements make sure to keep them stored out of reach of the children. Most children’s vitamins are flavored and very similar to candy. This is to encourage children to take them. However, it can also lead to children confusing them with candy. Since it is possible to overdose on vitamins, keep them out of reach.

When you take vitamins and minerals you give your body a good boost of energy. Unfortunately not many people realize the importance of giving their bodies these supplements. Now that you read this article, you have good tips about this topic that will surely help you feel much better as your body thanks you for it.

The Trump Administration Says Poverty Is Over. They're Lying.

The Trump Administration Says Poverty Is Over. They’re Lying.

OPINION 07/28/2018 11:02 am ET The Trump Administration Says Poverty Is Over. They’re Lying. Bryce Covert Guest Writer 5.2k 2.5k The Trump administration would like you to believe that poverty doesn’t really exist in the United States of America.
First, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N Nikki Haley argued in June that it was “patently ridiculous” for the United Nations to study poverty in America, a waste of “time and resources.” Then President Donald Trump’s Council of Economic Advisers released a 66-page report all but asserting that poverty isn’t a problem in the country. In service of the administration’s goal of imposing work requirements on any anti-poverty program it can, like health insurance or housing, it’s declaring victory in the war on poverty launched a half-century ago. The true problem, the administration claims, is not that people are poor, but that they’ve been made lazy and have to be forced to work.
They couldn’t be more wrong. Poverty exists, and the administration’s favored policy changes will only make it dramatically worse.
As with Trump’s relationship to other kinds of economic data ― fudging the numbers when it suits him, claiming the credit only when it makes him look good—the administration’s argument that poverty doesn’t exist in America is built on a deeply questionable basis. Rather than relying on the official poverty numbers released by the Census Bureau, the CEA would rather use an alternative measure based on how much families spend, not how much money they have.
Brendan McDermid / Reuters U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley speaks at a press briefing at U.N. headquarters in New York on July 20, 2018 On its face, it’s a strange way to measure poverty — not by the money in your bank account, but by what you buy, which can be funded by cash but also simply racking up debt. And indeed, when two economists examined this way of measuring poverty earlier this year, they found the method doesn’t hold up. The other measures — the official poverty numbers, the supplemental ones, measures of material hardship, measures of how many people lack decent work— have their flaws, but they all point to poverty rates multiple times higher. In fact, the consumption-only measure would lead one to believe that poverty dropped significantly during the Great Recession, a time of mass unemployment and foreclosures that decimated people’s finances.
We have other ways of knowing that poverty is still a huge problem in the U.S. You can just ask poor people whether they exist. If Trump and his advisers want to claim that it’s been solved, they have a lot of people to explain themselves to.
They should tell that to the more than half a million people in the U.S. who are homeless on any given night — including almost 200,000 who have no shelter at all — a number that is widely considered to be an undercount. The Trump administration points out that, according to this count, “99.9 percent of people had shelter and 99.8 percent were housed.” Even if that’s accurate, those who constitute the administration’s rounding error still go without a home in one of the wealthiest countries in the world.
Beck Diefenbach / Reuters Jonathan Payne, a homeless man, takes down tarps he had used to protect his possessions during an El Nino-driven storm in San Francisco on Jan. 6, 2016. If the Trump administration really thinks poverty doesn’t exist in the U.S., they should tell that to the 15.6 million American families who were food insecure for at least part of 2016, meaning they had limited access to food because they couldn’t afford what they needed. More than 6 million of those families went through times where someone in the household had to cut back on how much they ate and their eating patterns were disrupted because they couldn’t afford enough food. It’s true, as the CEA report notes, that “the vast majority of Americans have reliable access to food.” But even a small bout of cutting back on nutrition has huge health impacts , particularly on children.
The administration should tell it to the people teetering on the edge of financial ruin, including the 7 percent of adults who say they struggle to get by and the 40 percent who wouldn’t be able to cover an unexpected expense of just $400.
And they should tell it to the rising number of families living in extreme poverty, surviving off of a mere $2 per person per day. That’s not only considered severe here at home; that kind of hardship is what the World Bank would dub extreme poverty anywhere in the world. Many of these families, researchers have found, have no money coming in — not through work and not through public benefits ― all in one of the richest countries on the planet.
15.6 million American families were food insecure for at least part of 2016, meaning they had limited access to food because they couldn’t afford what they needed. Those families, in fact, offer a perfect case study in why the Trump administration’s desire to add work requirements to many social programs is so pernicious. Congress passed welfare reform in 1996; now, poor people have to leap over a number of hurdles to get help. One of the hurdles is a work requirement, which forces the poor to search for and secure a job and then prove it to a caseworker in order to get their benefits. Right after welfare reform passed, extreme poverty began to spike , particularly among those who were subject to those policy changes.
Work requirements aren’t the only reason extreme poverty has risen, but they did throw people off the rolls and mostly leave them in dire poverty. In Kansas, the median earnings four years later for people who had left welfare because of a work requirement were just $2,175 a year, while more than a third had no income at all. In Maryland, only 8 percent managed to rise above the poverty line. In a number of other states , people who were kicked off the program because of work requirements were more likely to live in deep poverty than out of it.
Welfare work requirements also haven’t helped people get good, steady work. Instead, they’ve left a growing slice of the country in desperate poverty, despite the administration’s claims that it doesn’t exist.
The CEA explicitly says it is trying to build on 1990s welfare reform, claiming that that experience proves its case that all programs should include the same work requirements. But 20 years after that policy change, it’s clear that too many families have been left out of the social safety net altogether, forced to subsist on pitiful amounts of money in a country that boasts the richest billionaires in the world; in a country whose collective wealth has surpassed the $1 trillion mark. Imposing work requirements on even more people struggling to get by will only increase their hardship.
If Trump doesn’t think poverty is a problem now, just wait until people who make ends meet thanks to food stamps and Medicaid have nothing left at all. No matter what metrics he wants to use, no matter how much he tries to fudge the numbers, the ranks of the poor ― undeniably in existence today ― will swell and their suffering will spike. We’ll have retreated even further in the war on poverty, a battle Trump wants to pretend we’ve already won.

Supplements and Health: Sorting the Facts

“Lose belly fat.” “Build muscle.” “Lower your cholesterol.” “Improve your sex drive.” Browse the shelves of any supermarket or pharmacy, and you will find dietary supplements that promise to do all this, and more. Supplements are a multi-billion-dollar business, and today more than half of American adults take them, many at the advice of their doctors. But dietary supplements can have real risks. They are not required by federal law to be proven safe “to the FDA’s satisfaction” before hitting the market, raising concern among critics about a perceived lack of safety oversight and consumer education.

Using the latest science as the basis for discussion, Forum experts examined the risks and benefits of supplements. How effective are they? What about dosages — or interactions with prescription medications? Should supplements be subject to more stringent rules and tests? What role should doctors, pharmacists, and drugstores have in helping consumers make safe, educated choices about supplements? This panel attempted to help sort the facts about supplements and health.

Part of The Dr. Lawrence H. and Roberta Cohn Forums, this event was presented jointly with PRI’s The World & WGBH on May 11, 2017.

The dangers of blue-green algae: what you need to know

What you should know about toxic blue-green algae blooms What you should know about toxic blue-green algae blooms Ecologists are warning people in Fredericton that a blue-green algae bloom may be behind the sudden deaths of three dogs who died after swimming in the St. John River. Here’s what you need to know about the pesky microbe and its troubling consequences. The pesky microbe — actually bacteria — is lethal to animals and harmful to humans Lavaniya Rajah · CBC News · Posted: Jul 27, 2018 4:00 AM ET | Last Updated: July 27 A bloom of blue-green algae is shown by researchers near Edmonton. Toxins from the microbe — actually bacteria — are likely behind the deaths of three dogs in Fredericton last weekend.(University of Alberta)
Ecologists are warning people in Fredericton that a blue-green algae bloom may be behind the sudden deaths of three dogs who died after swimming in the St. John River.
New Brunswick’s provincial veterinarian, Dr. Jim Goltz, said there’s no definitive answer, but given the time of year, he suspects toxins from blue-green algae are the cause of death.
“We’re pursuing that angle as our first investigation into the potential for toxins,” he said.
Elsewhere in the province, Moncton is contending with a blue-green algae problem of its own.
Nicole Taylor, director of utilities, said the city is working with two consultants to address the algae, which has also been detected in the Turtle Creek watershed, the city’s source of drinking water.
New Brunswick isn’t the only province contending with the potentially deadly microbe. At least 246 Canadian bodies of water have been shown to have high concentrations of blue-green algae at various times in the last 15 years
Here’s what you need to know about blue-green algae and its troubling consequences. Toxic algae blooms: What you should know about the mysterious phenomena What is blue-green algae?
Although it’s commonly referred to as blue-green algae, it’s actually bacteria (scientific name: Cyanobacteria) that can produce toxins harmful to people and animals.
A photosynthetic bacterium, it produces energy through photosynthesis, according to the British Columbia Ministry of Environment website. That’s why it wreaks havoc mostly in the sunny summer months and early fall.
At one point, biologists grouped the bacteria with algae — possibly because they are similar in appearance. But blue-green algae is now recognized as its own phylum. Two of the dogs died after visiting Carleton Park along the St. John River in Fredericton on Sunday.(Adam Travis/@adamtravis_) Where do you find it?
The bacteria is present in almost all lakes in Canada, says David Schindler, a professor of ecology at the University of Alberta.
But blue-green algae is a bigger problem in the Prairies, where a lot of the soil has naturally high levels of phosphorous, which help the bacteria grow, Schindler said.
Still, blue-green algae has become a problem in waterways across Canada. “It’s not that they’ve invaded, but that they’ve increased — from nearly undetectable levels to nuisance levels,” said Schindler. What causes the bacteria?
Blue-green algae typically grows rapidly in areas where there is an abundance of nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen, according to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks .
Blooms can also be created from polluted storm water run-off, run-off from agriculture, fertilizer, lawn waste or septic systems, or other materials that wash into lakes and decompose. How do you recognize blue-green algae?
Blue-green algae is not normally visible in the water, but under the right conditions, the bacteria increase in number and form blooms — a soup-like layer on the water’s surface that can actually be seen from space, said Diane Orihel, a freshwater ecologist who teaches at Queen’s University.
The bacteria form in water that is shallow, warm and slow-moving or still. They are typically more common in the late summer and early fall, but may be present in deeper, cooler water. A satellite image captures algal blooms on Lake of the Woods — which straddles the borders between Manitoba, Ontario and Minnesota — on Oct. 20, 2017.(Caren Binding, Environment and Climate Change Canada)
And although they are often blue-green, the bacteria can range in colour from olive green to red.
Fresh blooms often smell like newly mown grass, while older blooms may smell like rotting garbage. What harm can it cause?
Harmful toxins are mainly released from the blue-green algae when the cells of the bacteria break open or die. This can happen because of cooler weather, rainfall and windy conditions.
Contact with blue-green algae blooms can be lethal to pets. Goltz, New Brunswick’s head vet, said it “can kill animals within half an hour of exposure and after the toxin has been ingested.”
Human reactions range in severity. While some toxins can attack the liver or the nervous system, others may just irritate the skin and eyes.
Health Canada said it is rare to be exposed to the toxins through ingestion because water sources are monitored for blue-green algae levels.
That’s a good thing, because if water containing blue-green algae is consumed, it can cause headaches, fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting.
Swimming in water containing the toxin can irritate the skin and eyes. Eating fish from water contaminated by the bacteria or using products with blue-green algae has similar effects, too. A muscovy duck and its young swim through an algae-infested canal in North Fort Myers, Fla., on July 10.(Andrew West/Associated Press)
Blue-green algae is also used as a food supplement, often in tablet or caplet form. Companies advertise the bacteria as both a potential source of protein and a weight-loss agent.
But Health Canada cautions that the safety of these products has not been firmly established, although supplements made with spirulina blue-green algae have been shown to be harmless. What should I do to prevent algal blooms?
“Reduce external nutrients going into the lakes,” said Paul Frost, a Trent University biologist and algae expert.
Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks recommends using phosphate-free products, avoiding fertilizers, maintaining a natural shoreline on lakes and riverfront properties, reducing run-off and checking septic systems.
Frost says people need to focus more on “diffused nutrient sources” — and not just in places next to lakes and streams.
“These are sources of nutrients coming from scattered places in the catchments, like storm water treatment ponds or from farm land,” he said.
“Fertilize less. Keep a natural shoreline. Pick up your pet waste. It all has a positive value to reduce nutrient load into lakes” What should I do if I find blue-green algae?
If you suspect you’ve come across blue-green algae, don’t drink the water, or bathe or swim in it. Make sure to keep your pets out of it, too.

Important Advice About Vitamins And Minerals That You Really Must Learn

Eating a healthy diet is crucial, along with knowing which supplements to take to promote good health. This information will help to make a difference in your life. Keep reading to increase your education.

If you are lacking a particular vitamin, it is probably best for you to add that to your diet instead of taking a multivitamin. While there are many different vitamins and minerals in these pills, most of the time the level of particular vitamins is not as high as we need. Buying a single vitamin would be more effective.

Two of the best sources for vitamin D are exposure to the sun and milk. If you are not a big milk drinker or do not spend a lot of time in the sun, you should take a supplement with vitamin D. Vitamin D protects your bones and keeps them from becoming brittle.

When looking for supplements, make sure that you look for those that are in their purest form. For example, Vitamin D3 is the purest form of this supplement and D2 is the synthetic version. This means that the latter may not be as effective and may possibly give you different results than you had hoped for.

Coenzyme Q-10 is used to treat heart and vessel conditions, including angina, congestive heart failure, diabetes, gum disease and high blood pressure. This potent formula strengthens immune systems and increases energy. Patients can get the substance naturally in seafood and meat; however, most prefer to take a Coenzyme Q-10 supplement.

Vitamin B9 is an essential vitamin for women. It will reduce high blood pressure, prevents heart disease, and helps reduce memory loss. Orange juice, eggs, melons, dark green vegetables and strawberries are all great foods that have high levels of vitamin B9. Many vitamin supplements are formulated for women with extra concentrations of B9.

Not all multivitamins are created equal. In fact, you need to be checking to ensure that the list of vitamins and minerals included in the multivitamin account for 100 percent of your daily allowances. Therefore, you are ensuring that you are getting all the essential nutrients that you should be getting from a multivitamin.

The best way to get vitamins and minerals is through your diet. To ensure you are getting what you need, add plenty of superfoods to your diet. Superfoods are high in a variety of vitamins and minerals. These foods include broccoli, blueberries, leafy green vegetables, whole grains and many other foods.

Always second guess the info you read about mineral and vitamin supplements. Most advertisers are more interested in selling a product to you than they are with your health. Question all you see when you obtain this information. Discuss your concerns with your doctor.

As you read above, it should be obvious why vitamins and minerals are so important to add to your diet. You are going to feel much healthier when you use the tips provided. Pass the ideas along to family members and friends so they too can enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

7 Best supplements that will clean your arteries naturally at home

7 Best supplements that will clean your arteries naturally at home : Heart attacks are caused by the blood supply to the heart being suddenly interrupted. Without this supply, heart muscles may be damaged and begin to die.
fatty deposits called plaque buildup in your arteries, they can narrow the vessels and raise your risk of atherosclerosis and heart disease. Several supplements are available that, over time, might help dissolve plaque and improve the function of your arteries, lowering your risk of chronic circulatory problems.
Here are 7supplements that can help you unclog your arteries

1. Take fish oil supplements. If you don’t like fish or don’t have access to fish, you can simply take fish oil supplements to help get omega-3 fats. Look for fish oils that contain EPA and DHA oils. Although you might expect consuming fat to increase arterial plaque, omega-3 fatty acids may help slow plaque deposition and, over time, reduce its amount, according to experts at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Consuming supplements containing these unsaturated, healthy fatty acids can lower levels of blood triglycerides while raising levels of HDL, helping to keep your blood cholesterol in a healthy range. They may also help prevent inflammation of the arterial lining and reduce the risk of blood clots, both of which promote plaque deposits.

2. Take psyllium supplements. If you have difficulty getting enough fiber from foods, you can take psyllium supplements. Psyllium is a water-soluble fiber available in pill and powder forms.

3. Increase soy protein through supplements. Soy proteins are commonly available as powders that you can mix into a variety of foods and beverages (juices, smoothies, etc.). Several studies have shown that soy protein supplementation can have a beneficial effect on your cholesterol levels.

4. Take niacin supplements. You can also take niacin (vitamin B3) to help lower cholesterol levels. However, talk to your physician and monitor niacin supplementation closely. Common side effects at high doses include:
• Flushing of the skin
• Stomach upset
• Headaches
• Dizziness
• Blurred vision
• Increased risk of liver damage

5. Garlic Supplement. Garlic isn’t just a culinary herb but is also a useful supplement if you’re concerned about arterial plaque and atherosclerosis, according to evidence summarized at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Garlic contains a compound that’s converted into allicin when cloves are crushed. Allicin could help lower blood levels of cholesterol by suppressing a liver enzyme that makes cholesterol. This eventually reduces plaque so You can simply add more fresh garlic to your food or take garlic supplements if you don’t enjoy garlic in foods.

6. Take plant sterol supplements. Beta-sitosterol and sitostanol are two additional supplements that may have a positive impact on cholesterol. You can find these options in supplement form at most vitamin shops or health food stores.

7. Take coenzyme Q-10 (CoQ-10) supplements. CoQ-10 is an essential nutrient used to treat a variety of heart and blood vessel conditions. It can also counteract muscle pain resulting from other cholesterol-lowering medications called “statins.” Consider taking CoQ-10 if your doctor has prescribed one of these medications.

Wisconsin ordered to pay for gender reassignment surgeries…

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A federal judge has ordered Wisconsin to pay for the gender reassignment surgery for two transgender Medicaid recipients.
Cody Flack, 30, and Sara Ann Makenzie, 41, filed a lawsuit in April, saying a state rule denying coverage for surgeries to treat gender dysphoria violates the Affordable Care Act and their right to equal protection, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. The state rule that excludes coverage for undefined “transsexual surgery” was adopted in 1996.
U.S. District Judge William Conley granted a preliminary injunction Wednesday barring enforcement of the rule. He suggested the injunction could be expanded to include any transgender Medicaid patient whose doctor recommends the surgery.
“The likelihood of ongoing, irreparable harm facing these two individual plaintiffs outweighs any marginal impacts on the defendants’ stated concerns regarding public health or limiting costs,” Conley said in the 39-page order.
Flack could get his surgery in two or three weeks, said Attorney Rock Pledl. He said Makenzie may have to wait a few months because of her status on the paperwork process with an HMO.
Flack, who has cerebral palsy, uses a motorized wheelchair and relies on Supplemental Security Income for the disabled as his sole support. He first identified as a boy at age 5, according the lawsuit. Makenzie is also is disabled and relies on Supplemental Security Income. She has been living as a woman since 2012.
“This is tremendous,” Pledl said of the ruling.
The state’s Medicaid has a budget of approximately $9.7 billion to cover about 1.2 million eligible residents. An estimated 5,000 of enrollees are transgender.

Vitamin Secrets For Saving Money And Time

It is not easy to achieve your health goal. You have to make sure you’re doing everything correctly. Start by test-driving a few new tips and insights about all things vitamin-related.

Never ignore the product warnings on vitamin levels. Vitamin and supplements can have serious side effects when taken with prescription and over the counter medicines. Ginseng can be very dangerous if you have high blood pressure or take heart medications. Lycopene can be deadly if you have a tomato allergy. Always read the warning labels or ask your pharmacist or doctor before taking any vitamins or supplements.

If at all possible, it is best to ingest minerals and vitamins in their natural form by enjoying a well-balanced diet. Try getting between five and seven portions worth of fresh produce daily, along with small protein portions. If this is hard to do, consider adding a supplement.

Many people who are in need of supplemental vitamins and minerals simply struggle physically with swallowing the pills as they can be large and, in all honesty, horrible tasting. Try drinking water that has vitamins and minerals includes with some sort of fruit taste added. This allows you to get some of the vitamins you require as well as adding to your daily water intake.

Do not use tea or coffee to wash down your vitamins and minerals. These beverages may inhibit the absorption of certain minerals. Tea has been proven to decrease the amount of iron the body absorbs. While coffee has not been shown to have the same effects, it would be best not to take any chances.

Some people believe they are able to get all the nutrients their body needs just by eating a healthy diet. This really is a good place to start, but it would be impossible to eat enough to get all the vitamins and minerals your body needs because most foods have been over-processed.

Make sure you get enough of certain vitamins and minerals in your diet. For multivitamins, you should try to get 100% of the listed recommended daily allowance. By taking the maximum amount, you can make sure you get enough of the required vitamins and minerals in your diet to sustain good health.

There is plenty of great advice here that will clue you in on the benefits of vitamins and minerals. Of course, reading all of this is a great first step towards feeling better than ever. In order to reach that goal, you must put these tips to use.

Tips To Help You With Vitamins And Minerals

Learning about vitamins and minerals is the first step to good health. If you truly want to feel amazing every day, supplements can be a huge help. The expert advice below has been collected to provide you with some quick ideas to get you started, so be sure to read this article in full.

If you are lacking in the vitamin department, you should consider changing your diet. While many people take this as a sign that they need to run to the store and buy a supplement, most of the nutrients you need can be found in food. Do a little research in order to figure out what changes need to be made.

Although all vitamins and minerals are important, some are even more important for growing children. When planning your child’s diet, make sure they are getting enough vitamins A, C and D, as well as the B vitamins. Calcium and iron are also very important for your growing children’s bodies.

Have you ever noticed that despite working out, taking your bodybuilding supplements and eating healthy that you tend to get sick more frequently than others who don’t break their back to promote a healthy body? Try adding more of the essential vitamins to your supplement doses. You are burning far more fuel than others thus more deficient in these vitamins and minerals so you need to consume more than the average person.

Potassium can be found in dried fruits, cereals, milk and beans. This important mineral is used to treat Menière’s disease, menopause symptoms, arthritis, muscle aches, Alzheimer’s, intestinal disorders and allergies. Studies have shown that potassium may be beneficial to those suffering from high blood pressure and may help prevent stroke.

You can add folate or vitamin B9 to a healthy diet. It boosts cell health, boosts red blood cell production, and promotes heart health. It can be found in a variety of foods, too. These include lettuce, asparagus, lentils, spinach, and beans. People that do not get enough folate in their diet can also try taking folate supplements.

Some nutrients to think about taking are flax seed oil and turmeric. In addition to warding off illness, they also help to reduce inflammation. Flax seed oil helps your joints, your heart, and your brain.

Your body receives most of its mineral and vitamin intake from what you eat, so it is important you’re eating many fresh foods. Reheating and cooking food, strips the nutrients out that you need. It is important to prepare enough fresh food daily.

Now that you are done reading, there is another step you must take. That step is to take action and start using vitamins and minerals in your daily health regime. Not only will you feel better, but you’ll know that the time spent reading this article was truly priceless!

10 Foods That May Benefit Your Brain Better Than Antidepressants

10 Foods That May Benefit Your Brain Better Than Antidepressants

LIKE OGP ON FACEBOOK : 13.6K Shares
Antidepressants are as common today as pain relievers and nighttime sleep aids, but does this mean they’re the best option for our health? Of course not! We weren’t intended to need or rely on drugs and though mental illness is nothing to play around with or make light of, we should always look to natural remedies first instead just assuming we need a drug to fix our problems. Antidepressants work by either promoting serotonin in the body or both serotonin and dopamine, our feel-good hormones that produce a healthy mood.
The problem with antidepressants is that sometimes, they can produce too much of one or the other causing an imbalance, and many of them come with side effects that alter long-term health such as weight gain, reduced gut function, mood disorders, emotional numbness, and some may even make depression worse. Depression From an Insider: Does Natural Health Really Work?
As someone who has struggled with life-threatening depression herself, I relate and sympathize to people who want a fast solution; I certainly did. Depression is isolating and can make everything in life seem impossible. It can also hit out of nowhere and stay around for years with waves on and off throughout your life. Depression can also be genetically passed down and is often associated with other mental illnesses such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorders, anxiety, panic disorders, and often even related to autoimmune disorders.
When I began to learn about nutrition and functional medicine, I quickly learned that drugs really didn’t have that much to offer in comparison to natural options. Chemically produced in a lab, synthetic prescription drugs can only do so much and create more damage than good . However, the benefits of natural foods have been around since the beginning of time. They do not change, our bodies recognize them as direct nutritional food, and believe it or not, our brains actually love them.
When I implemented holistic health options into my life 10 years ago to come off antidepressants, I turned to natural medical doctors for options, including Julia Ross and Mark Hyman, along with John Hopkins University . All sources I found advised removing sugar from the diet, which I found immediately helpful for not just depression and anxiety but also epilepsy, disordered eating, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Next to go were all refined grains and most processed foods. In addition to removing these foods, healthy foods are immediately added and required to nourish the brain for the production of necessary neurotransmitters in the body such as GABA, serotonin, and dopamine.
Amino acids are also required by the body, along with fresh produce and high-quality fats for optimal brain health. Once removing harmful foods and implementing beneficial foods, near immediate relief can be seen within a period of two weeks though recovery is an ongoing process and returning to unhealthy eating habits can reintroduce symptoms.
When you give your body (and brain) what it needs, it’s as if a fog is lifted because neurotransmitters have the best fuel possible for what they need to actually function as they were meant to.
Here are 10 plant-based foods that promote optimal brain health better than drugs: 1. Chia Seeds
Forget that they are trendy; chia seeds are packed with amino acids, iron, and contain B vitamins that are must-haves for a healthy brain . Because they’re a complete protein they also assist with optimal neurotransmitter function and the production of serotonin in the body.
Finally, they’re a great source of omega-3’s and fiber. Omega-3s help reduces depression, anxiety, and assist with healthy blood sugar levels. When blood sugar falls, insulin spikes and then falls which triggers a bad mood (and often sugar cravings) which creates a vicious cycle in the brain. 2. Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes are a fantastic carbohydrate that contains L-tryptophan, an amino acid directly related to help prevent depression and anxiety. Sweet potatoes also reduce blood sugar levels and are high in vitamin B6, a natural anti-depressant. Many people suffering from depression are critically low in B vitamins, therefore implementing foods that contain them is an easy and quick solution.
Sweet potatoes are also high in magnesium and potassium which reduces cortisol and high blood pressure that increases with stress. 3. Avocados
Avocados are high in beneficial fats for the brain including monounsaturated fats that have been linked to a healthy brain and heart. Avocados also contain magnesium, trace amounts of omega-3’s, B vitamins and potassium.
They contain especially high levels of folate as well, a B vitamin that directly reduces stress and anxiety, and promotes healthy brain function overall. See all our avocado recipes for plenty of ways to use them in your meals, snacks, and even in desserts! 4. Flax
Flax is one of the best sources of omega-3s, even higher in ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) than chia. Flax is also packed with fiber to reduce blood sugar levels and contributes to better blood pressure too. Sprinkle a little flax on your foods however you can; it has a great nutty taste, and it can be added to everything from veggies to healthy desserts! 5. Gluten-Free Oats
Oats are loaded with brain benefits, but for best results, choose gluten-free. Why? Because even if you’re not allergic, there are many studies that do link gluten to depression , so if you suffer depression, why not play it safe? Oats are some of the best foods for improving brain health because they’re packed with B vitamins, protein, magnesium, iron, potassium, and calcium. These all work together to release feel-good hormones, promote steady energy levels in the body, reduce blood sugar and blood pressure, and can even assist with sleep health and sugar cravings.
Choose plain oats (without added sugars) and add in some almond, cashew or coconut milk for a delicious dairy-free breakfast. Top it with berries and stevia for natural sweetness, or go overnight oat style and add in some chia and coconut yogurt ! 6. Broccoli
This might sound a little too simplistic, but believe it not, this humble veggie is great for your brain. It’s a great source of vitamin B6, protein, and calcium which all promote relaxation and a happy mood. Broccoli is also great to reduce anxiety, insomnia and can help reduce sugar cravings. Try to have a cup a day; there are so many delicious ways to prepare it! 7. Quinoa
The complete protein we all love and can’t get enough of is also a great natural anti-depressant. This mighty little seed is high in magnesium, iron, B vitamins, and all essential amino acids. Quinoa is a wonderful gluten-free replacement to couscous and also more nutritious.
Quinoa’s high mineral content directly plays a part in the release of serotonin, GABA, and even melatonin which can help you sleep easier. Its natural carbohydrates are also slow-releasing which is optimal for blood sugar and a longer lasting happy mood. You can bake with the whole seed, cook it up like rice or soak it overnight with oats for a healthy porridge. 8. Hemp
Hemp seeds are extremely high in omega-3s, complete protein, and fiber. They are wonderful mood enhancers , and they promote relaxation and happiness in the body. As most people know, hemp is not the same as marijuana and contributes to drug-like properties to the body.
It is one of the top vegan foods promoted by Julia Ross, a medical doctor and expert in natural brain health and depression relief through dietary therapy; she is also the author of the best-selling book, The Mood Cure that tackles natural relief for depression through diet and proper supplementation. Hemp is also one of the richest sources of magnesium and iron that are critical to healthy brain function, and one of the best for improving dopamine production in the body without chemicals or stimulants. 9. Walnuts
Walnuts are another amazing food for your brain. Walnuts are the only nut to contain traceable amounts of omega-3 fatty acids , and they’re high in magnesium as well. They also decrease inflammation in the brain that can interfere with a healthy mood and contribute to healthy cholesterol levels often affected by those with depression.
Walnuts are even helpful for inducing melatonin in the body which can help you sleep, and they naturally prevent sugar cravings when eaten in place of sweets. Enjoy ¼ cup a day to benefit the most. Walnut butter is another option that provides the same benefits. 10. Greens
The best food of all must be saved for last … leafy greens are phenomenal for depression . They are high in magnesium, B vitamins, iron, and they promote a happy mood naturally because they contain grounding properties and life-giving properties by nature.
Greens can help stabilize blood pressure, improve healthy blood flow to the brain, reduce sugar cravings, improve amino acid uptake, are high in vitamin C to improve iron absorption and may also contain trace amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. Choose kale, romaine, chard, dandelions, arugula, collards, spinach, butter lettuce, leaf lettuce, and herb and spring mixes as the healthiest options. And don’t forget…
Probiotic-rich foods are also vital for brain health; our gut bacteria is what produces serotonin in the body. Though a healthy diet and elimination of sugar, refined grains, and most processed foods is a great place to start, adding in fermented and cultured foods such as kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, yogurt, and apple cider vinegar can provide even more benefits. Choose dairy-free options for kefir and yogurt such as coconut or almond alternatives.
When I added in these foods to my diet and removed sugar and refined grains, along with a few others and a high-quality multivitamin, I saw near immediate relief after suffering depression nearly 11 years of my life. I also implemented a healthy exercise routine which is recommended for optimal brain function since it stimulates feel-good hormones in the body. I have been medication free since. Again, mental illness is not to be taken with a grain of salt. Sometimes even natural options do not work for some people and further help will be needed.
However, if you suffer from depression and think there is no way out, please give natural options a try first. Nature is more powerful than we will ever know and our bodies are capable of so much when we give them exactly what they’ve always needed from the start.
We also highly recommend downloading our Food Monster App , which is available for both Android and iPhone , and can also be found on Instagram and Facebook . The app has more than 8,000 plant-based, allergy-friendly recipes, and subscribers gain access to ten new recipes per day. Check it out!

What’s the Big Deal About Having A Sales Funnel? It seems, these days, that in the world of online marketing, everyone’s talking about funnels and how you absolutely must have at least one funnel for your business. So what’s the big deal? Why is this so important? Let’s talk about it… What Exactly Is a Sales Funnel? Simply put, a sales funnel

Trump’s War on the Poor has just begun – The Washington Post

Trump’s War on the Poor has just begun – The Washington Post

by William J. Barber II and Karen Dolan July 18 William J. Barber II is president of Repairers of the Breach and co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign. Karen Dolan is a fellow of the Institute for Policy Studies.
Mission accomplished in the “War on Poverty.” So declares the White House, which in a white paper released last week from the president’s Council of Economic Advisers claims that the war is “largely over and a success” and that it is time for more stringent work requirements for public assistance.
Never mind all the decades President Trump’s party has spent trashing anti-poverty programs to justify shredding them: The new narrative states that these programs have worked so well that U.S. poverty has been all but eradicated.
The programs stemming from President Lyndon B. Johnson’s 1964 initiative have indeed improved the lives of millions of Americans. A Columbia University study found that poverty would be much worse today had it not been for food assistance, the earned income tax credit, Medicaid and the expansion of Social Security benefits.
But the scourge of poverty isn’t over in the world’s wealthiest nation. The Census Bureau’s supplemental poverty measure shows that more than 45 million people (14 percent of us) were impoverished in 2016. The rates are even higher for children under age 18 and seniors.
But that’s only the beginning. Almost 100 million more live at 200 percent of the poverty line, a more accurate indicator of a family’s ability to make ends meet.
All told, around 43 percent of us are poor or low-income, a report by the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) and the Poor People’s Campaign found. And nearly half of all U.S. citizens would be unable to afford a $400 emergency, as per a 2016 Federal Reserve study. Disproportionately affected are people of color, Native Americans, people with disabilities, single mothers, children and transgender people.
In cynically declaring the War on Poverty a success, the Trump administration is attempting to justify its War on Poor People. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson recently proposed tripling rents on those receiving housing benefits and imposing work requirements. The GOP-controlled House passed a farm bill that would add onerous work requirements to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), better known as food stamps.
And this spring, Trump signed an executive order declaring his intention to force people who receive food assistance, Medicaid and low-income housing subsidies to adhere to strict work requirements or lose their critical subsistence benefits. Perversely titled “ Reducing Poverty in America ,” this directive aims to remove access to the same assistance programs that have alleviated the effects of poverty.
Food and nutrition assistance, Medicaid and subsidized housing have actually proved highly effective . Most of the people receiving these benefits who are able to work do work — but in jobs with low pay, no benefits and unpredictable schedules.
Block granting and strict work requirements on cash-assistance programs have already put that help out of reach for many families, leaving them unable to afford basic necessities. To do the same to noncash assistance programs — such as for those that provide food, housing or health care — would put those things out of reach for the families who need them most.
It’s not a question of funds. We’re a nation of riches, but those riches benefit only those at the top. Starting in the 1970s, the IPS-Poor People’s Campaign report found, employers no longer shared the benefits of increased productivity with the workers who produced it. Between 1973 and 2016, hourly wages grew by about 12 percent, while productivity increased by nearly 74 percent.
Further, so-called right-to-work laws have systematically dismantled workers’ collective bargaining power to negotiate fairer wages and better working conditions. And a surge of voter suppression laws are keeping many of those most affected by these policies — such as the poor and people of color — away from the polls.
Meanwhile, the United States now spends more on the military than it did even at the height of the Korean or Vietnam wars.
To stop the War on Poor People, we need a moral movement. We need good jobs that pay a living wage. We need an accurate assessment of who is poor — based on things such as adequate housing, health care, water, sanitation, child care, sufficient wages and assistance when needed. And we need to look critically at how poverty goes hand in hand with social forces such as racism, militarism and environmental destruction.
What we don’t need is a declaration of a victory against poverty from the same people who have been trying to dismantle anti-poverty programs for decades.

Dietary supplements: No positive health effects

In recent decades the number of people taking dietary supplements and vitamins especially in developed countries has grown.
In total, global sales exceed 123 billion dollars each year.
The problem is that there’s growing evidence that many of the supplements and vitamins have no proven positive health effects.
Al Jazeera’s Science Editor Tarek Bazley reports from San Francisco.

For The Most Up-to-date Knowledge About Vitamins, This Article Is Where It's At

Vitamins and minerals are an important topic today because everyone should take them if they want to live a healthy life. There is so much information out there that it may become hard to know which ones are the best to take. If you are confused then don’t worry, because the following information has solid tips to keep you informed.

If you are lacking a particular vitamin, it is probably best for you to add that to your diet instead of taking a multivitamin. While there are many different vitamins and minerals in these pills, most of the time the level of particular vitamins is not as high as we need. Buying a single vitamin would be more effective.

The best source of vitamins and minerals are fresh fruit and vegetables. Making sure that you eat at least five servings of vegetables and fruit every day can help ensure you get all of the vitamins and minerals you need to be healthy. For the best results, eat them raw or very lightly cooked by steaming or poaching.

If you decide to take a multivitamin, be sure you are choosing the right one. Some multivitamins do not contain all of the vitamins and minerals that truly benefit a person. Be sure to look for a multivitamin that contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12, C, D, E, and K. It should also have minerals zinc, selenium, chromium, copper, molybdenum, and magnesium.

If you are planning on taking any vitamins and minerals, you should try to schedule them around mealtimes. When you eat and digest your food, stomach acid is produced. This can help break down any vitamins you are consuming, which means that they will be a lot more effective.

It is expensive to eat healthy. When you take minerals and vitamins, you will be helping yourself to rid the fats from your system. It will also let you digest foods that have a bunch of chemicals in it that can make you unhealthy.

Veggies and fruits (especially citrus) contain quite a bit of vitamin C. Supplements can be taken if your diet is not rich in vitamins. Vitamin C boosts the immune system to fight off such diverse problems as the common cold, skin problems, acne, infections, gum disease and more. Studies have also shown that people dealing with Alzheimer’s, dementia and ADHD can be helped with vitamin C.

While taking a child’s gummy supplement may taste great, you will need more than one of these each day. Adults require higher dosages of vitamins than kids, so a single gummy will likely not be enough. Don’t err on the side of excess as this can be detrimental.

You should now be aware of the importance of taking vitamins and minerals in your everday life. Without them your body lacks the key tools it needs to give you lots of energy. Since most people are always on the go, taking vitamins and minerals should be the first thing you take each day.
