The findings have significant implication for India because use of health supplements— either through prescription or on own—has grown multifold in the last few years, say doctors. “Extra vitamin A supplements can lead to dangerous, toxic levels if taken too frequently,” notes Dr. Clifford Lo, an associate professor of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health.
The nutrients coming into our body from food are still absorbed better than any other artificial substance and also the most potent. “They are accompanied by many nonessential but beneficial nutrients, such as hundreds of carotenoids, flavonoids, minerals, and antioxidants that aren’t in most supplements,” adds Dr. Lo. The addition of herbal supplements has added to the growing demand of over-the-counter supplements.

Reports suggest that the nutraceutical industry in India is worth about $2.2 million and dietary supplements cover 32% of the market.
“There is an urgent need to warn people against over-use of supplements. They can help only if there is a known deficiency of a particular vitamin or mineral. Otherwise, long-term usage of such supplements can be harmful,” Dr Sandeep Mishra, professor of cardiology at AIIMS, said. He stressed on the need to focus on eating healthy instead.
