Half Hearted Doesn’t Get You Started.

don't be half hearted to start businessIt doesn’t matter what your business or job, if you don’t commit to doing something you love, you’re in danger of getting into the “half hearted” zone. This is more dangerous when you have your own business, but could also mean losing a job.

The first thing you need to look at is your own desire to do the job at hand. If there is something in the business that you see as lucrative and that is the ONLY reason you want to do it, there is the possibility (or worse) that you can enter into it half heartedly. So, ask yourself if it is something that you are really passionate about. Does the task you have to do FEEL like work, or is it a pleasure?

In my own experience, something that doesn’t “float your boat” is that which leads to a less than committed approach. Essentially, you need to reflect on your own desires, interests and passions to be able to make the right decisions.

Avoiding Half Heartedness.

I have already mentioned knowing what you want, the reason for doing it and your passion for the business. If you are sure that your choice is truly the one for you, there could be other factors that are causing your less than fully committed approach.

These things usually end up being psychological and can destroy confidence and therefore the belief that you will get results. The importance of looking inside yourself and discovering the underlying problem cannot be stressed enough, but this is not always easy to accept.

Many people make statements that are designed to take away the feeling of failure in a personal way. They tend to blame a system for not working, even though others are using it with great success. Either that or it’s so and so’s fault because they promised to have you earning by the end of month 1. The problem with this attitude is that EVERY opportunity is no opportunity. NOTHING works because the person is relying on others and not doing the work necessary to see the success they crave.

“We will do the work for you” is a myth, or extremely rare at best so don’t fall for it!

The most important thing you can do is look for the RIGHT opportunity in the niche that you have the MOST passion for. If there isn’t one, perhaps you could design and build that opportunity yourself. There are courses out there that can help you do just that. There are so many ways to research with the resources available to us. It’s vital that you know what you want FIRST. You avoid the danger of the half hearted approach when you are fully committed to making something work.

no half heartedness to learnYes, you may have to learn new skills. Until you accept that it’s YOU that makes things happen and are aware that blame is just another excuse for your own inaction, you will never move forward.

Think about what you say to yourself and others. Is it right to state that something “doesn’t work” when there are several people making a LOT of money from it? The most ethical marketers share what they are doing to earn that money in paid for courses or sometimes for free if you’re a part of a network marketing team. It’s up to you to ask questions if you don’t understand what you have to do so you can be successful too.

Of course, there are occasions where certain tasks don’t suit certain people. If you don’t “fit” in a particular system, you have not failed. You have found out that the system is not the right one for you. To know this, you have to do the work. Edison succeeded in making the light bulb by means of finding out what didn’t work. He eventually found what did and it grew from there. Without that determination and passion to achieve, we may not have had the advances in lighting technology we have now. They could have taken longer.

Don’t give up your dream. Know what you want to do and where your passion is and you will achieve the success you crave. Settling for less than your true desire can lead to a half hearted approach that can prevent you starting on the right foot, or worst still, guarantee failure and dissolution and the fatal “blame culture”.

To the future,

Foolish Consistency Is The Hobgoblin Of The Mind

Foolish Consistency Is The Hobgoblin Of The Mind I have been continuing my reading of: “Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion” by Robert Cialdini wherein Cialdini explains the tactics used to influence people to say “yes”. We need to know this for two reasons (1) so that we can recognize them – to defend ourselves against them – or (2) use them in our marketing – to help people reach the “correct decision”…. and “Buy this product”. Of course as ethical marketers we will want to be sure the product is something we are completely confident in, AND that the product

Why Being Scared Of The Future Should Be Banned.

fear of what\'s aheadIt’s true that many are afraid of what the future has to offer. Why is it that the future is so scary?

I was browsing through one site looking for ideas for a blog post. I came across a student who was reaching the end of his studies and who had just one year left making it clear that “he was scared of the future”. WHY?

Because of the reaction he was getting to his work! Outside influences were the issues that were making him think he wasn’t good enough. What could he do to make this change?

I believe there are a few things that can help anyone with “future fear” to assess where they are and move forward with confidence into a bright tomorrow.

  • Know who you are
  • Know your purpose
  • Know what makes you happy
  • Stop listening to the “inner demons”

It’s important to know who you are and what makes you function. There are times in life where you can get an overwhelming “identity disorder”. You can get confused in your own identity because of the opinion of others around you. Some opinions may be good and some bad, but to prevent this identity crisis, even if you have a stable existence most of the time, you can ask your friends to help you out.

You will know more about yourself when you think about your values. How much do those values mean to you as a person? This is important. How can these values help you in your actions to reach your goals? These core values are the basis of who you are. If you don’t like what you see in yourself, it could be you have strayed from your values and formed bad habits. It’s time to change these things if this is so. Bad habits don’t serve you, but your core values, if they are ethical and good, certainly will.

What is your purpose? I don’t mean what is your “sense of purpose”, but more your life purpose. There is a difference!

know who you are and fight the fearKnowing your purpose and how it fits with your personal ambition is vital. If you are passionate about what you do, it could be said that you have a life purpose. If your job is something you do to earn a living, then you have a sense of purpose to live from day to day, but your life purpose is lacking. Know what gets you up effortlessly in the morning and do your best to find a way to do that to achieve. The Student with the “future fear” was talking about his writing. He wants to be a journalist, but is fearful because of his results. This is not because he isn’t passionate about his writing; it’s about fear of what others think and the criticism received.

When you have a life purpose, you have a passion that will come from your heart. There is NOTHING that will stop you and you will find a way. You will use the criticism to learn and find a better way. Fear kills the passion and destroys the heart. Being fearless helps to break away and move forward to find your way.

Knowing who you are and what your purpose is leads us to what makes you happy. You have chosen your life purpose and are happy in it. Having just a “sense of purpose” without that driving passion for what you do can leave a void. That’s when you can feel less than happy with your lot. There will always be something missing.

I went through a “void”. It took me a long time to understand and realize that I didn’t have to put up with it!

Music was my life outside work (which was necessary) and family time. I was doing a job that was just a sense of purpose, but my focus was always on what my music was going to bring me that week. When I reached the point where I got a little disillusioned with my music and tired, I quit the music altogether. Now I have reignited my musical activities and love every second of it.

My void was filled and, even though I love my work now too, the music helped to make me feel completely happy with my lot, no matter what my situation. I became more self-aware and this helped to kill those demons that were gnawing away at me.

Of course, you may find that searching your “self” and looking for the things that help you to know who you are, what your life purpose is and what makes you happy is not easy. Working on being more self-aware and also working to dismiss those “inner demons” of negativity that lead to the disillusion in the first place is going to be a journey all of its own. This is an important one and something that will help you to “find yourself” amongst the “noise” of modern living.

Being fearful of the future is something that is “fed” to us in the media. How many crises and tragedies are on the news these days? Good news doesn’t sell, and fear is something the top people in charge are not discouraging, so we continue to hear about the “bad” in the world. Think about it! We are scared because of a distinct minority, not because of the majority of things that are good and full of encouragement for the future.

Being scared of the future is a state of mind. It’s not easy to overcome without focus and recognition of the things discussed here. I hope, if you are suffering the smallest fear for tomorrow, that you can find your happiness and life purpose and definitely ban that fear from your life.

To the future,

Barrie Evans

I wrote a novel – and you can too

It actually began in December 2011. My virtual friend, Willena Flewelling, told me about this organization called Nanowrimo.org. Briefly she explained that every November thousands of men and women around the world join the Nanowrimo Challenge to write at least 50,000 words of a novel. The agreement is that it is a new novel, it is not something you have already started writing. The goal, and the excitement of this adventure is jumping with both feet, starting to write and just allowing the process to happen. I joined Nanowrimo.org that December and basically forgot about it except when I

Practice Is A Daily Business.

Practice Makes PerfectPractice is something we all need to get to grips with in our everyday business and life. Learning the skills we use is one thing, but practice is how we perfect them. Many will “shy away” from practice because it may remind you of tasks that were seen as chores when a child. This would be more relevant for someone who learned music as an example, but the practice was something “to be avoided” because it’s “boring”. After all, we just want to play that tune, so why do I need to do scales?

Too many times, we as humans look to get to the gratifying point of what we’re doing, but forget that to be the best, we are required to repeat sometimes mundane actions to improve. This is true for all walks of life, even in our business.

The Benefits Of Practice

One of the biggest benefits of practice is perfecting the skill we learn. It is always something that is done AFTER learning the skill. If you were to learn to play an instrument, you can only practice notes and note progression when you have learned them. The rhythm and way the whole piece comes together to a finished project is where the practice comes into play.

What practicing does is focus your attention on the moment and the task you need to complete. Yes, you have an overall goal, but to achieve the goal you desire, it takes work. As you learn the skills you need, you have to perfect them, but to avoid impatience, you need to concentrate fully on learning the skills and perfecting them to achieve your ultimate goal.

Impatience is our enemy. To achieve perfection is pretty difficult, if not impossible, but to reach an acceptable level of performance is certainly achievable with the right effort and repeated action.

Practice not only keeps focus on the daily task, it helps progress. If a pianist is working towards playing that concerto with the orchestra, he first has to learn his part. The notes, scales and technique to produce the correct tone and production of the tune are all part of that process. This starts off slowly, and gently builds to the finished piece. Step by step is the order of the day. Even with the biggest talent in the world, I would doubt that even the best pianist can pick up a brand new, technically challenging piece of music and play it flawlessly first time. Even the best sight readers will struggle sometimes.

Focusing on what you do now without your eye on the goal is what is sometimes required. Yes, of course you need to focus on your goal, but this can sometimes hinder progress. This is more evident when you get impatient. Some tasks require more practice than others, so it’s important to get those parts right before progression to the next stage.

Of course, as you progress, each task becomes more enjoyable because you improve and you see results. It doesn’t “feel” like practicing, even though that is what you are doing. Practice is a habit, but it’s a habit that keeps you focused on improving your current task so that your goal becomes closer. Focusing on your goal without this practice leads to disappointment or worse.

This is why, I believe, so many people quit. Too many times we can try to reach that goal without doing everything necessary to achieve it.

Practice Makes Perfect

Improve from daily practiceWhatever your goal, you will need to perfect each step. Missing steps can lead to bad results. If the pianist left out a section of the first movement of his concerto part, it would lead to a poor performance. He may be as perfect as he can be with everything else, but leaving out that vital practice to get the section he “thought he could play without effort” could be his downfall. Everything is needed to fit into place.

Everything has a progression, no matter what you do. Without the key parts there, there is no completion. The result is a bad one. The same applies to your business. Leaving out vital parts of the tasks to reach your goal gives you bad results. This can happen when you get impatient and take your eye off what you need to improve and rush onto the next step.

Practice makes perfect in everything we do.

Practice is not a chore, it’s necessary.

The pianist who is looking forward to his performance enjoys his practice the more he improves.

The business owner enjoys his work the better the results he gets.

Learning the skills is one thing. Practicing them to reach the best objective is the thing we should all be looking to achieve.

To the future,

Barrie Evans

A very simple strategy to make social shares look natural Are you like me on sites like Twitter and Pinterest where you ignore social shares in your feed?. It is so obvious that the content on the screen is just generated with the click of a share button and really carries very little value for you. If you did engage you would more than likely not get a reaction or a reply because the original poster more than likely never visited the site to post in the first place so probably spend very little time there. 5 Ways To Build An Active Blog Community

build an active community on blogBeing a blogger, one thing you should always strive for is building an active community of readers and subscribers on your blog. When you have great interaction, this does two things that improve your SEO without having to work to do it. You have more interaction in the form of comments and also visitors stay longer and this improves the dreaded “bounce rate”.

Here are 5 great ways to build that active community and take your blog to the next level:

  1. Be Human (Be Real)
Your blog is like your own personal or business “hub” and an important part of your personal branding. You should always look to be “you” because your community is built around the value that you give.
Comments require a response, even if it’s just “thanks”. The way to build up interaction is to be sure that your readers are acknowledged for the comments and input they offer to the community you want to create. This also shows that conversation is welcome.
    Related: http://ift.tt/1UGDyq7
  2. Ask Questions
Encourage comments by asking questions. If the subject of your blog post offers opportunities to ask questions, then it’s a good idea to do it. Encouraging the reader to comment by asking questions helps to give the impression that you care about them. Take the response activity mentioned in 1 and you can have some really good interaction and value added content.
To further encourage return visits, include subscription form or newsletter sign up forms at the bottom of your posts. This will give you more opportunities to ask more questions and build rapport. What’s more, people who love your content will likely subscribe or at least share it with their friends and colleagues on social media.
  3. Write For Your Market
Writing for your market, which is something you should be doing anyway, is key. You can go to sites like Yahoo answers to find out questions people are asking and focus your post around those questions. Use the questions technique to encourage the interaction and find out how you can help your community.
    Related: http://ift.tt/1UGDxma
  4. Give The Reader A Reason To Hang Around
It goes without saying that you want visitors to hang around. Creating content of high quality and offering great tips is a great way to keep them on your site looking for more. Also they will come back in the future if you give them things they can use. If they get results from your tips, they will want to come back and stay longer.
To keep visitors on your blog, make sure you link to related content. This is good for SEO too because the internal linking helps the search engines to “see” the relevance and map out your site better. Check out some of the top blogs and see how they do it for some ideas. Related content helps to keep the visitor engaged
  5. Create Community Focused Event On Your Blog
This is something I have not yet set up, but have seen in action. It’s another great way to build relationships and that feeling of a “community” and the reason why I am pursuing this to include in my strategy.
You can make up some challenges to encourage people to take part in and report back on their progress, which is another way to get return visitors to read your content. This in turn increases engagement.
Keep your events niche specific as much as possible so that it triggers interest within your community. You could even use the “ask questions” tactic as a small survey to find out the things your readers want to read about or learn.

I hope you find these tips to build an active community on your blog useful. I would love your feedback, so please leave a comment. If you think this is of use to other people you know, please share too.

To the future,

Barrie Evans
