Vitamins: What You Should Know Before You Begin

Vitamins and minerals have been a part of human health forever. Many people go about their daily life and do not realize the impact these things have. Looking at the nutritional content on a box of cereal is not enough. Read the article ahead carefully and learn what vitamins can do to impact your life.

If you are feeling like you need a bit of a boost you need to increase your vitamin intake. Vitamin C not only aids in fighting off infection, it also gives you additional energy by supplementing what you may be lacking. The main reason we feel less than ideal is that we are deficient in vitamins and minerals.

Of all the sources of vitamin D, sunlight and cow’s milk are very high in potency and easily absorbed. If you aren’t a sun person or milk drinker, a Vitamin D supplement may be for you. This will keep your bones strong.

Thiamine, or vitamin B1, deficiency can cause neurological and psychiatric symptoms. These symptoms can include weight loss, weakness, irregular heart rate and psychosis. A vitamin B complex can ensure you receive the vitamin B1 you need, or you can eat pork, brown rice, liver, oatmeal, leafy vegetables, eggs and potatoes.

Try adding more magnesium, Omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin D to your diet if you are feeling sad. A deficiency in any of these may actually lead to depression. Omega-3 fatty acids are known to support brain health, while magnesium can help your body and mind calm down and relax.

Folic acid prevents birth defects, certain cancers, stroke and heart disease. This B vitamin is added to flour, cold cereal and pasta. Additionally, many leafy vegetables, melons, beans and meats contain folic acid. Folic acid is used to treat Alzheimer’s, macular degeneration, RLS, neuropathy, osteoporosis and other signs of aging.

Ask your doctor to give you a physical exam to check for vitamin and mineral deficiencies. You need to figure out what you are deficient in, and what you need.

Glucosamine treats a variety of joint pain issues. This supplement is made from seashells and shark cartilage. Patients have reported glucosamine supplements help relieve knee pain, back pain, glaucoma and the pain associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis; however, there is not sufficient medical evidence to support these claims.

Use caution if you take supplements. Never take more than the recommended amount. This can happen with interactions as well. The particular effects are going to have to do with what vitamin was taken, but you’re going to find any result unpleasant.

When you are taking more than 500mg of calcium per day, split it into two doses. One big dose can overwhelm you body, meaning you don’t actually absorb as much as you should. Splitting it up with breakfast and dinner ensures you get the most you can from every dose.

Knowing what vitamins and supplements can do for your body is great, since many people disregard what they are important for. Now you have a better understanding of the importance of vitamins in your life. Take advantage of what you read here to get the most from your vitamin intake and enjoy good health.

Russian trolls and Twitter bots exploit vaccine controversy

Russian trolls and Twitter bots exploit vaccine controversy

A nurse prepares to administer the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine at Children’s Primary Care Clinic in Minneapolis. (Courtney Perry for The Washington Post) By Carolyn Y. Johnson , Reporter August 23 at 3:54 PM Public health experts battling dangerous misinformation about the safety of vaccines have a new foe: Twitter bots and Russian trolls .
Researchers found bots and Russian trolls mentioned vaccines more often than the average Twitter account over a three-year period, but for different reasons. Russian trolls stoked the debate by tweeting pro- and anti-vaccine messages in an apparent attempt to sow division, while bots that spread malicious software appeared to use anti-vaccine messages that inflame strong responses from both sides to attract clicks.
“Apparently only the elite get ‘clean’ #vaccines. And what do we, normal ppl, get?! #VaccinateUS,” a Russian troll account tweeted in one of the messages that stood out to researchers because of the unusual line it drew between vaccine fearmongering and income inequality.
“That’s not something you see from an antivaxxer,” said David Broniatowski, an engineer at George Washington University who led the research published in the American Journal of Public Health . “Elites getting clean vaccines — we thought that was very unique to the Russian trolls and could be interpreted as an attempt to link vaccination to a specific division within American society.”
The trolls were users connected to a Russian propaganda effort run by the Internet Research Agency, a troll farm. They were identified by the researchers through a list released by Twitter to Congress that was further refined by NBC . Twitter bots were identified through bot repositories and spanned a range including spambots that are clearly non-human and “content polluters” that spread malware or try to scam people.
Between 2014 and 2017, Twitter accounts that have been identified as Russian trolls were 22 times as likely to tweet about vaccines than the average user. The tweets fell on both sides of the vaccine debate and appeared aimed at sowing discord by amplifying the debate — even though the vast majority of Americans believe vaccines’ benefits outweigh their risks. The tweets also appeared to link the debate to other divisions within American society, such as class and racial divisions.
[ There’s a surprisingly simple way to convince vaccine skeptics to reconsider ]
But these didn’t appear to be anti-vaxx accounts mounting an attack on American public health by design; only one out of 550 tweets by Russian trolls touched on vaccines, the researchers found.
These trolls may be flitting between divisive topics. Renee DiResta , who studies computational propaganda with the grass-roots collective Data for Democracy, said her own research suggests Russian trolls have fixated on the vaccine debate not to seed a public health crisis but to exploit its divisiveness.
Tweets she discovered from September 2017, for example, connect vaccine denial to racial anxieties: “Diseases Expert Calls for White Genocide Since Most Vaccine Deniers are White,” several Russian trolls tweeted.
“It’s opportunism — opportunistically amplifying controversial topics,” DiResta said.
She pulled up one Russian bot, @WadeHarriot, that bounced around between various themes — anti-gay, pro-Ted Cruz, anti-Obama or pro-Trump until in early 2017 it began spouting anti-vaccination ideas. Only 38 of that user’s 6,000 tweets were about vaccines. They began right around the time that the topic surfaced in the general news cycle because vaccine critic Robert Kennedy Jr. announced that President Trump asked him to head a new commission on vaccines. That commission never came into being.
Bots focused on “content pollution” — circulating malicious software — were more likely to talk about the harms of vaccines, suggesting they may be trying to take advantage of a high-profile topic to get people to click on a link and accidentally download malware or be sent to a fraudulent website that would ask for a password. Run-of-the-mill spambots that are clearly not human, however, were less likely to talk about vaccines than average users.
Researchers could not explain to what extent this information stream influenced people’s behaviors or contributed to general anti-vaccine sentiment.
Their work strikes a cautionary note about the best way to fight misinformation. Because Russian trolls may be trying to stir up debate, battling them directly could run the risk of “feeding the trolls,” Broniatowski said, polluting social media with angry messages that could amplify the discussion even more and give the false impression that the sides are evenly split.
Public health officials tend to focus on education to combat anti-vaccine messages, but given this content isn’t always coming from real people, tech companies’ ongoing efforts to weed out bots and accounts misusing their platforms could be another powerful tool.
The vast majority of vaccine-related tweets analyzed in the study came from users that couldn’t conclusively be categorized as people, cyborgs or bots by a tool called “Botometer.” Those actors might be people who really believe vaccines are dangerous, trolls trying to exploit the controversial topic to deepen divisions in American society, or bots using controversy as clickbait.
In response to the study, Twitter shared details of that work, pointing to a blog post that described its efforts to create tools that can identify “spammy or automated accounts automatically.” In May, the company said it challenged more than 9.9 million such accounts per week. The company also takes measures to ensure automated content can’t be discovered by general users.
Jon-Patrick Allem, a research scientist at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, said that to design effective interventions, it will be necessary to understand how or whether this online behavior affects real people — and that much of the research into public health messages on social media is still stuck in the first phase of quantifying the problem.
“The research I’ve been exposed to — and a lot of it is in the works right now — shows that Russian-backed accounts were designed with the intention to create discord on very particular and very nuanced issues in American culture,” Allem said.
But the risk of false information isn’t simply one from foreign governments. Allem has found social bots are much more likely to put out messages that they quit smoking with the help of e-cigarettes than real accounts — even though there isn’t convincing evidence that they help smokers quit. He also worries bots could disseminate incorrect information for a variety of interests, perhaps spreading misinformation about how effective medications are or promoting supplements and vitamins.
“It’s hard to identify the puppet master behind social bots,” Allem said.

Don’t Just Learn Music Theory! Connect it to the Songs You Know and Play!

Music Theory is like every other aspect of music, you need to work at it from the ground up and you will only get the benefit of it if you use it in what you play! In this video I will talk a bit about what the very fundamental things are that you need to know well and why you need to know that part of Music Theory. I will also talk about why you should apply it and how it will benefit your playing.

Music Theory, what to learn and how to use it. It’s not a topic that I see discussed that often which is a pity since there are certainly things to be aware of in terms of actually getting anything from studying theory.

ABCs and 123s: Songs that Make Learning Easy!

ABCs and 123s - Songs that Make Learning Easy | Listen & Learn Music

One of the most inspiring aspects of working with children is witnessing their learning and growth. At the beginning of the year, it’s important to assess what my students know, and where extra support would be beneficial. These fun and goal-oriented songs address basic academic skills that are essential for all little ones to learn!

Some of the goals addressed in these songs:

  •     Increase ability to count to five
  •     Improve shape identification and discrimination
  •     Increase ability to identify colors
  •     Improve ability to recite the alphabet

So, let’s start with the basics: the ABCs!

Everybody knows the traditional ABC song, but this version of “The Alphabet” is catchy and packs lots of information about the alphabet into the verses. This song details all the letters, as well as how many letters there are, and the difference between uppercase and lowercase letters.

The Alphabet| Listen & Learn Music

Visuals can be added to complement the verses and can be used to target goals such as identify letters and sequencing. This updated version of “The Alphabet” is so catchy and appropriate for students who are beginning to learn the alphabet as well as those who are ready to begin reading and writing.

Another vital skill is counting! In “Jinglin’ High Five”, students have an opportunity to count up to five, as well as backwards from five, high five their friends and jingle their little hearts out. We love to use these wrist jingle bells so that their fingers are free, and  they are then able to use their tiny digits to count to five.

Wrist Jingle Bells in Music Class & Music Therapy

When it’s appropriate, the number in each verse can be increased or decreased depending on the student’s needs. Students will also have an opportunity to high five staff or peers, increasing social interaction between the students. This song has it all: practicing counting and high fiving! What could be more motivating?

“Ring Around the Rainbow” is a fun song that targets children’s ability to identify colors. Handbells are different and interesting, and oh so tempting to play, but with simple lyrics, students will know exactly when it’s their turn to play.

Ring Around the Rainbow | Listen & Learn Music

This song can be used in a group setting or in an individual session, and handbells could be substituted for other colored instruments. Additional lyrics can be added to include multi-step directions (i.e. “red plays, and then green”), or each student may have multiple bells so that each child has to remain focused as there are more colors to think about. Talk about a challenge! But, with such a fun instrument, students are bound to wait and listen for their turn to play.

“Make A Shape” uses visual aides and scarves to improve shape identification. For each verse, students are identifying and creating shapes with their scarves. In this song, children are able to have a multi-sensory full body learning experience to learn and identify shapes.

Make a Shape | Listen & Learn Music

Shape drums may also be used to reinforce shape identification and could even be used as a fun matching game (i.e. “what shape did I make with my scarf?”). The possibilities are endless and so much fun.

These four songs cover so much essential educational material necessary for young children. Between ABCs, counting, color identification, and creating and identifying shapes, with some practice, students are able to learn important skills in a motivating and musical way. Tell me in the comments below, which academic skills will you be addressing through music this school year?

You can listen to all of these songs in their entirety right here. Lyrics, chords, mp3, and instrumental track for these original songs are available for download. As is the case for all Listen & Learn Music creations, we invite you to adapt this song as needed to best serve your students and/or clients.
